Becton was just less than a minute away from pulling one of the biggest upsets in this season’s state playoff tournament.
The Lady Wildcats were leading the top-seeded Belvidere team with 50 seconds remaining in the game, but a couple of things did not go the way of the red and white.
After getting the ball back and in the lead, Becton was called for a 10-second violation in not getting the ball back. On their next possession, a three-point shot went in-and-out of the basket.
On the other end, Belvidere scored a couple of baskets and in turn ended the Lady Wildcats season prematurely, 43-38, on the road.
"We played a very good game and our goal was to hold the ball for 30 seconds each time down the floor and to keep them at 20 points at halftime," said Becton head coach Mike Ryan. "We did that and held them to 20 points, but we were cold from the floor."
The Lady Wildcats were held to only 10 points and were down 20-10 at halftime.
While Becton came from behind and went ahead in the fourth quarter, Ryan added that the team did not lose any steam having to come from behind and catch Belvidere. "We wanted to be behind five points by the end of the third quarter and then steal it in the third quarter," said Ryan whose hit the schedule right on the dot and was behind 26-21 heading into the fourth quarter.
Becton kept up the momentum in the fourth quarter and caught and went ahead in the final quarter.
But for the Lady Wildcats the plays did not go their way. "It came down to two plays, a very questionable 10 seconds violation and the shot that went in and out," said Ryan. "We played very well. It just did not go down for us."
Both senior Jessica Knapp and senior Lauren Cosentino finished with a dozen points each while freshman Keri Ryan had nine points.
Ryan knew that Belvidere would do what all the other teams would against them, try to take out Knapp. "They played a two-three zone and packed it in on Jessica (Knapp). We needed to find some perimeter shooting so that they would have to come out and cover the perimeter. Jessica (Cosentino) and Keri (Ryan) really came through."
Coming into the game, Becton was playing well as the ninth seeded Lady Wildcats pulled off a mild upset at eighth-seeded Bogota in the first round on Feb. 26. In that game Knapp had a big night with a game-high 23 points while the pairing of Keri Ryan and Cosentino contributed 11 and nine points respectively.
Becton again found itself behind in the first quarter, this time by five points, but the Lady Wildcats caught up to Bogota by halftime to tie the Bucs at 16. The second half was Becton’s as they pulled away in the fourth quarter.
