Assault

East Rutherford

On Feb. 20, at approximately 11:28 a.m., a Hawthorne resident and building manager at Boiling Springs Garden, located at 147 Hackensack St. responded to headquarters to report he had been assaulted by a tenant. The complainant reported that he was conducting a monthly apartment check of 50-year-old Mary Bierley and she had struck him with her apartment door. He signed a complaint charging her with simple assault.

Burglary/Theft

East Rutherford

On Feb. 17, at approximately 10:38 a.m., a Phoenix, AZ resident reported that sometime overnight, someone had stole her Dell laptop computer from a second floor board room at the Sheraton Hotel, located a 2 Meadowlands Plaza Dr. The computer was valued at $1,800.

On Feb. 15, at approximately 4:08 p.m., police responded to a residence on the 200-block of Hoboken Road for the report of a burglary. Police responded to the apartment in question where the resident reported coming home to find the rear door open and lock broken. Stolen from inside was a Gateway laptop computer valued at $1,200, a PlayStation 3 game system and two iPods.

Lyndhurst

On Feb. 21, at approximately 4:46 p.m., a Lyndhurst resident reported that her pocketbook had been stolen sometime while shopping at ShopRite, located at 540 New York Ave. The pocketbook was later recovered in the bathroom with $60 missing from it.

On Feb. 21, at approximately 1:26 p.m., a resident of the 100-block of Valley Brook Avenue reported that someone had stole a PlayStation game system and approximately $400 worth of games. Police found no forced entry to the premises.

On Feb. 16, at approximately 8:58 a.m., a complainant at a business on the 500-block of New York Avenue reported coming into work to find the place ransacked. Missing was approximately $60 worth of half-dollar silver coins and some collectible mugs. Police were able to establish a possible suspect and located him later that night walking up New York Avenue where they picked him up on an outstanding warrant from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department. According to police, 20-year-old John Sicari of Lyndhurst admitted to the theft of the business and was subsequently charged with burglary and theft.

On Feb. 15, at approximately 4:31 p.m., a Wallington resident reported her 2003 Audi had been broken into while parked at Classic Athletic Club on Chubb Avenue. The victim found that the passenger’s side window had been smashed and missing from within was her Coach purse containing $50 in cash, an ATM card, cell phone and driver’s license as well as other personal belongings.

North Arlington

On Feb. 18, at approximately 11:47 a.m., police responded to Computer Guys at 10 Ridge Road on a report of a burglary. The owner entered the building at 10:30 a.m. and found someone had pried open the dead bolt lock on the front door and left it open. The actor stole four laptop computers and a case of Poland Spring water. The laptops were valued at $4,600.

Rutherford

On Feb. 23, at approximately 4:50 p.m., a complainant at the Extended Stay Motel reported that someone broke into his 1996 Dodge pick-up truck by punching out the driver’s side door lock and stole a GPS device and a satellite radio receiver together totaled at $800.

On Feb. 23, at approximately 4:47 p.m., a complainant reported that sometime between Feb. 22 and the day of the report someone entered his 1999 Jeep while it was parked on Maple Street and stole his vehicle registration and driver’s license. There was no sign of forced entry.

On Feb. 23, at approximately 3:14 p.m., a complainant reported that sometime between Feb. 22 and the day of the report someone entered his 2003 Kia while it was parked on Morse Avenue and stole four dollars in loose change, a $20 bill and a PSP game system. The vehicle had been unlocked.

On Feb. 20, at approximately 2:18 p.m., a complainant reported that sometime between Feb. 14 and the day of the report someone attempted to break into his car while it was parked in the driveway of his home on Hawthorne Street. Police observed that someone had damaged the driver’s side door lock while attempting to pry it open with a screwdriver.

On Feb. 20, at approximately 11:43 a.m., a New York resident reported that on Feb. 13 someone withdrew $7,000 in cash from her account at the Bank of America on Park Avenue without her authorization.

CDS

Carlstadt

On Feb. 18, at approximately 7:39 p.m., police were called to 417 5th St. by tenants of the downstairs of the residence that reported the upstairs tenants were engaged in a loud argument. Upon arrival, police entered the upstairs and questioned the tenants. While inside they saw a small bag of marijuana next to a glass pipe on the coffee table. One of the tenants, 32-year-old Adrian Esteban admitted the items were his. He was arrested and charged with possession of CDS and possession of drug paraphernalia.

East Rutherford

On Feb. 21, at approximately 3:39 p.m., an officer was taking surveillance in Passaic of a high drug-trafficking area that is known to be used by area residents to purchase narcotics. The officer observed a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer driven by 47-year-old Mary Rose Stoelbling, a borough resident police say is known to use CDS. Police effected a motor vehicle stop on Paterson Avenue when Stoelbling re-entered the borough for not wearing a seatbelt and questioned her about her presence in Passaic. According to police she admitted that she was trying to obtain crack, but the dealer didn’t have any. She was asked if she had anything illegal on her and she then pulled out two crack pipes from her sock. She was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and released ROR.

On Feb. 15, at approximately 7:53 p.m., police were conducting surveillance in Passaic in area known for high drug trafficking. During the surveillance, police saw a vehicle registered to a Wallington resident pull up to a residence. The driver handed a man an unknown amount of money and in turn he handed her a package. The officer followed the vehicle to Carlton Avenue where a motor vehicle stop was conducted. The officer questioned the driver, 24-year-old Anna Mielniczek of Wallington about her business in Passaic. She subsequently pulled a bag of marijuana from her coat. Mielniczek was arrested and charged with possession of CDS. She was released ROR.

North Arlington

On Feb. 22, at approximately 1:25 a.m., witnesses observed two individuals they believed to be involved in a drug transaction on Ridge Road at Canterbury Avenue. Officers arrived and found a bag of alleged cocaine at the feet of the two individuals. Police searched 21-year-old Michael Zajac of Summit and discovered a large clear plastic bag containing six smaller separate plastic bags containing cocaine. Police also found currency in almost every pocket on him, amounting to a total of $464. Police found nothing on the other individual. Zajac was arrested for possession of drugs, possession with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail was set at $50,000 with no 10 percent option. He was turned over to Bergen County Jail in lieu of bail.

Criminal Mischief

Carlstadt

On Feb. 21, at approximately 3:53 p.m., a complainant from Macy’s East, located at 2 Palmer Terrace reported blue and white graffiti on one of the overhead garage doors at the business. Police responded and cleared the graffiti of any gang affiliation.

On Feb. 18, at approximately 4:51 p.m., a resident of the 400-block of Monroe St. reported that there was a large dent on the passenger’s side rear quarter panel on her 2001 Hyundai Elantra.

On Feb. 15, at approximately 7:33p.m., a Rutherford resident reported that he had parked his 2007 Mercedes Benz in the Stop and Shop parking lot, located at 675 Paterson Ave. and at that time there were approximately 15 juveniles congregating, some skateboarding. The complainant said he returned to his vehicle to find damage to the left headlight, hood and front left fender. There were also several colors of paint imbedded in the vehicle’s paint. The juveniles were located and questioned, but none knew how the damage got there.

East Rutherford

On Feb. 20, at approximately 1:56 p.m., police reported graffiti on the wall at Daytona Trimmings, located at 251 Railroad Ave. The word "WHACK" and an "A" symbolizing the anarchy sign were spray painted on the building.

On Feb. 19 and Feb. 15, graffiti was reported on several locations at Liberty Commons, located at 55 Route 17 South. On Feb. 19, officers observed an obscene phrase and the phrase "you know who I am" written on the rear of the building. In Feb. 15, an officer observed "JUST", "know who I am" on the wall facing Becton Regional High School.

On Feb. 16 and Feb. 15, it was reported that there had been graffiti sprayed at the old Sequa building, located at 401 Central Ave. On Feb. 16, a borough councilman observed graffiti on the north wall. Subsequently, officers on the roof above the wall found the works "Rob or Rib", "Whack" and other symbols. On sky light covers, they found "JAO" painted in white. Also on the roof, "ER" was painted in large letters. There was also a bench on the roof that officers removed. It was suspected access was gained by scaling the wall. The day earlier, nearly the entire north wall of the building was found spray painted with the word "JUST" and the letter "O".

Lyndhurst

On Feb. 20, a resident of the 200-block of Lyndhurst Avenue reported that someone had tampered with the driver’s side door lock to a 2005 Chevy while it was parked in the driveway. No entry was gained.

North Arlington

On Feb. 21, at approximately 1:57 p.m., a victim reported criminal mischief to a 2006 gray Honda parked on Brandenburg Place off of Fifth Street. The owner of the vehicle found two six-inch key marks scratched above the driver’s side door handle.

Rutherford

On Feb. 23, at approximately 8:31 a.m., police received a report of graffiti on the east side of the Union Avenue Liquors building. The graffiti said "Rio love the police" in black spray-paint. Police received reports of two similar incidents, one on the New Jersey Transit tower at the corner of West Erie Avenue and Grove Street, another on the walls of Rutherford High School, both involving the tag "Rio" in black or white spray-paint.

DWI

Lyndhurst

On Jan. 15, at approximately 10:07 p.m., police responded to an accident on the loop of Route 17 where a vehicle had struck the guardrail. The vehicle was abandoned with the keys in it and soon after, police found the owner walking near the Whiskey Café on Wall Street West. The owner, 30-year-old David Graetz of Maywood first told police that his vehicle had been stolen, but then admitted the occurrence, according to police. He was subsequently arrested and charged with DWI and failure to submit to a breath test.

Fraud

Rutherford

On Feb. 22, at approximately 8:22 p.m., a landlord on Sylvan Street reported a case of fraud from a person who posed as a potential renter over the Web site www.craigslist.com. The landlord advertised an apartment for rent and received an e-mail from the address alfredo3powell@hotmail.com from someone claiming to be a resident of the United Kingdom who worked for the United Nations. The applicant said he was interested in renting the apartment and sent the landlord a check for $8,500 as a deposit. The landlord deposited the money and shortly thereafter received another e-mail from the applicant claiming the money had been sent to him by his agent for travel expenses and that he had accidentally sent the landlord too much. He asked the landlord to wire $2,015 to his travel agent, Crossbi Ofori, in Ghana. The landlord did so and shortly afterwards received another e-mail requesting he wire an additional $1,450 to the agent. At this point the landlord suspected fraud, contacted the bank and was informed the original $8,500 check had been forged.

On Feb. 22, at approximately 6:45 p.m., a complainant on Summit Cross reported that a $323 purchase of an iPod Touch had been made on his iTunes account earlier that day without his knowledge and shipped to an address in California.

Warrants

East Rutherford

On Feb. 15, at approximately 4:28 p.m., police received a call by New Jersey Transit Police that they had 27-year-old Brian Keens of Lyndhurst detained at the Secaucus train station on an outstanding $500 borough warrant. East Rutherford police responded and took custody of Keens, who was able to post bail and was released pending a new court date.

On Feb. 15, at approximately 3:50 p.m., an officer on patrol saw a 2003 Chevy Tracker with front end damage park on Orchard Street near Everett Place and saw the driver get out to check the damage. The driver, 39-yar-old Alfredo Angeles of East Rutherford told the officer he was fine. The officer requested his license and upon checking in the motor vehicle database, it was found Angeles had an expired and suspended license as well as a $1,000 warrant out of Clifton. He was transported to headquarters where Clifton police responded and took custody of him.
