Burglary/Theft

East Rutherford

On Feb. 14, at approximately 7:13 p.m., a resident reported a robbery at his apartment on Uhland Street. Upon returning for the evening, the owner noticed his front door forced open and entered to find his bedroom ransacked. Responding officers observed pry marks on the apartment door’s latch and dead bolt areas. Several items of jewelry were reported missing.

On Feb. 13, at approximately 11:49 a.m., an Oakland man emerged from B.J’s at 300 Route 17 North to find his 1998 Ford Van stolen. Missing was over $2,000 worth of food products, $50 in cash, and a cell phone.

On Feb. 11, at approximately 7:41 a.m., a resident reported that his 2006 Infiniti was stolen after the man had left the vehicle’s engine running to warm it up.

On Feb. 8, at approximately 1:04 p.m., a Union City man returned from B.J.’s at 300 Route 17 North to find his 1998 Ford van stolen. Missing were nearly two hundred cases of coffee valued at $5,680.

Lyndhurst

On Feb. 15, at approximately 5:15 a.m., a complainant at the Kingsland Shops, located near the corner of Page and Schuyler Avenues reported the theft of a 2004 Mack tractor and an attached trailer containing 19 cubes of paving bricks. The truck belonged to a Newark trucking company.

On Feb. 12, at approximately 2 p.m., an off duty police officer detained 35-year-old Sean Saunders of Passaic at the Rite-Aid in the Lyndhurst Town Center shopping plaza after he was observed shoving various items in his jacket. Saunders was found to have $47.73 worth of various cold and flu medicines and gum as well as a straw with white powder residue on it believed to be cocaine. He was arrested and charged with shoplifting, possession of drug paraphernalia and was also found to have an outstanding warrant out of Passaic. Passaic police came and picked him up.

On Feb. 8, at approximately 5:41 p.m., a North Arlington resident reported the theft of a gold wedding band, cell phone and a bank and check book from the center console of a vehicle while parked at VIP Fitness at 1000 Wall St. West. Police found no signs of forced entry to the vehicle.

On Feb. 8, at approximately 8:20 a.m., a 26-year-old Gregory Brewton of Paterson reported he had stayed at the Winslow Motel on Rutherford Avenue the prior night with two females and upon waking up, they were gone and so was his money, watch and ring. He gave a description of the females and they were located near the Burger King and it was revealed that they were juveniles, ages 16 and 13. They were both charged with receiving stolen property. The 13-year-old was released to her parents and the 16-year-old was turned over to the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department on an outstanding warrant. Brewton was found to have three outstanding warrants and was subsequently turned over to Madison police.

Rutherford

On Feb. 14, at approximately 11:29 a.m., a complainant at Classic Car Restoration on Route 17 South reported that sometime between Feb. 13 and the time of the report four trailer-mounted generators valued at $20,000 each were stolen from the parking lot. Officers observed that the lock to the gate had been cut.

On Feb. 13, at approximately 7:51 p.m., a complainant reported that sometime between Feb. 10 and the day of the report someone smashed the passenger’s side window of his 1994 Jeep while it was parked on Union Avenue. A GPS unit valued at $150 was reported missing from the center console.

On Feb. 11, at approximately 3:44 p.m., two complainants reported seeing a white male about 5’7" tall dressed all in black running down their driveway away from their house on Arthur Drive. The couple went outside and saw that the driver’s side window of their 2005 Lexus was shattered. A $400 GPS unit, an $800 pearl necklace and a $1,500 gold diamond bracelet were reported missing from the car. Officers responded and searched the area but didn’t find anyone matching the description.

On Feb. 11, at approximately 3:05 p.m., the general sales manager of Stadium Auto Mall on Route 17 North reported that several computers were stolen from a locked office sometime between Feb. 8 and the day of the report. The computers were valued at $2,000.

On Feb. 8, at approximately 10:22 a.m., the owner of Envision Optics on Park Avenue reported that three female Asian juveniles entered the premises and began trying on frames. While the owner was occupied with a customer for a few minutes the girls left. Afterwards the owner found that four pairs of frames valued at $1,070 were missing.

North Arlington

On Feb. 13, at approximately 8:07 p.m., a Bernice Road resident reported an unknown actor broke into an apartment. The victim left at 11 a.m. and upon returning at 8 p.m., found the actor used the back stairway to enter the apartment building, pried open the rear door and ransacked the apartment. The actor stole a Nintendo Wii valued at $300, an iMac valued at $1,300 and a Sony digital camera valued at $300.

On Feb. 8, at approximately 4:15 p.m., a victim reported the theft of an iPod touch, valued at $400, from Dunkin’ Donuts at 206 Ridge Road. He placed the item on a table, turned back and noticed it was missing. He claimed an unknown group of youths in the Dunkin’ Donuts stole the item.

Lyndhurst

On Feb. 10, at approximately 4:23 p.m., police conducted a motor vehicle stop near the corner of Polito and Rutherford Avenues and upon questioning the two male occupants, it was found they were in possession of marijuana and large sums of cash. Subsequently, 20-year-old Alex Rodriguez of Hoboken and 19-year-old Daniel Roman of Totowa were arrested and charged with possession of CDS, possession of CDS with intent to distribute and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school zone.

North Arlington

On Feb. 8, at approximately 1:02 p.m., police located 25-year-old Keiron Jones of Newark and determined he had a $500 criminal warrant in North Arlington and a $125 traffic warrant in Newark. He was placed under arrest and upon searching him, police found a bag of marijuana in his pants pocket along with brown wrapping. He was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was processed and turned over to Bergen County Jail in lieu of bail.

Rutherford

On Feb. 14, at approximately 8:01 p.m., a complainant reported that sometime between Feb. 12 and the time of the report the rear window of his 2000 Honda was smashed while it was parked on Orient Way. Nothing was reported missing.

On Feb. 12, at approximately 9:35 a.m., a complainant reported two large areas in the north alley and on the west side of the Verizon building on Orient Way were tagged with spray-painted graffiti. Officers couldn’t make out the writing.

DWI

East Rutherford

On Feb. 14, at approximately 9:04 p.m., police arrived at 1 Meadowlands Plaza Dr., where Anthony Meehan of Edgewater had crashed his 2008 Mitsubishi into the side of the Metromedia building. Meehan, still behind the wheel, was in and out of consciousness. After calling EMS, the responding officer noticed Meehan’s bloodshot eyes and the strong odor of alcohol. Meehan later admitted to consuming eighteen alcoholic beverages that evening. After transport to Hackensack University Medical Center, Meehan was charged with DWI.

On Feb. 10, at approximately midnight, officers responded to the site of a severe accident at Route 120 North near the 503 ramp. There they found a 1993 Jeep overturned in the left lane, and its driver, Patricio Chavez of Union City, nearby. He had sustained head injuries after losing control of the vehicle around a curve. Officers detected the odor of alcohol on Chavez’s breath, and transported him to Hackensack University Medical Center to treat his injuries and obtain blood samples. Chavez was issued a summons for DWI.

Lyndhurst

On Feb. 9, at approximately 8:02 p.m., an officer witnessed a male walking out of J&J Liquors at 39 Ridge Road carrying a black bag, however the officer believed the male was under the age of 21 by his appearance. When approached, the boy turned out to be 19-year-old Arthur Wilson of Lyndhurst who was subsequently issued a summons for underage consumption of alcohol. The proprietor of the liquor store, 50-year-old Ranjan Kapadia was issued a summons for serving alcohol to a minor.

Rutherford

On Feb. 15, at approximately 2:27 a.m., officers responded to a report of a fight at Felician College. Officers encountered 19-year-old Michael P. Howell Jr. of Hazlitt, NJ yelling at a security guard. Officers spoke with Howell, who smelled of alcohol, appeared to be intoxicated and had some swelling around his eye and blood on his lip. Howell, a student at Felician, acted belligerently towards the officers and admitted to having drank a 12-pack of beer that evening. He refused medical care and, after resisting several times and spitting on one of the officers, he was arrested and transported to St. Mary’s Hospital. He was issued summonses for underage consumption of alcohol, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and throwing bodily fluids at a law enforcement officer.

On Feb. 8, at approximately 12:22 p.m., a complainant reported she received an e-mail that day at 2:55 a.m. from someone claiming to be a hit man. The e-mail said a price had been put on her head for $10,000 and that if she wired him $10,000 he wouldn’t harm her and would tell her who put the price on her head. The e-mail was written generally and didn’t specify the complainant’s name.
