Resident thwarts burglars
(by Michael Lamendola - February 20, 2008)
A vigilant resident who wouldn’t succumb to a home invasion helped police catch two of four burglars that attempted to rob his home.
According to police, on Feb. 8, at approximately 1:05 p.m., the resident who lives on the 700-block of Page Avenue reported hearing his doorbell ring and someone jiggling the handle in an attempt to gain access. The resident then observed the male get in a vehicle across the street, then saw the vehicle make a U-turn and pull right in front of his home.
Two males, according to the resident’s report, then exited the car, went to the home’s side door and attempted to kick it in. The resident then yelled and the suspects fled as the resident chased them down Page Avenue. The victim immediately called police with the license number of the vehicle and a description of the suspects. The plate number was immediately broadcast over police band and Officer Vincent Auteri spotted the vehicle while in his personal car near the corner of Fern and Stuyvesant Avenues. Auteri followed the vehicle onto Route 21 and then Route 3 when Detective Michael Failace had caught up.
The Honda Civic was pulled over in an Exxon gas station in Clifton where the driver and passenger, 20-year-old Daniella Deoliveira of Kearny and 20-year-old Victor Perez of Newark, immediately got out and were arrested. In the meantime, one of the two backseat passengers got behind the wheel and fled.
Police later located the Civic in Newark where it was towed back to Lyndhurst as evidence. Deoliveira was charged with attempted burglary and was released ROR after posting $10,000 bail. Perez was also charged with attempted burglary and possession of a weapon after he was found with a knife. He too was released ROR on $10,000 bail.
A third suspect was identified through investigations and an active warrant for attempted burglary and eluding police has been put out. Police are still investigating the identity of the fourth suspect.
"Right now, we have lifted some prints from the vehicle, have some DNA, so we’re making progress on the investigation," said Detective Captain John Valente.
