Police search for armed robber

(by Michael Lamendola - February 06, 2008)

An armed robber attempted to knockoff a Lyndhurst liquor store on Monday afternoon and police are asking residents to be on the lookout for the criminal.

According to Detective Captain John Valente, officers were dispatched to J&J Liquors at 39 Ridge Rd. at approximately 2:30 p.m. on an activated panic alarm. En route, headquarters received a call from the owner of the store in which she told police she had just been the victim of an attempted armed robbery.

The owner told police that a man had walked in, approached the counter and partially pulled a handgun from a plastic bag he was holding and told her, "I’m holding you up". According to Valente, the man fled the store west on Sixth Avenue when he saw the owner move to hit the silent panic alarm, gaining no proceeds and not injuring the owner.

Video surveillance is carefully being reviewed, but police have released a still image of the suspect. He is described as an older white male in his 50s or 60s, approximately 5’10" and 250 pounds. At the time of the attempted robbery, he was wearing brown sunglasses with dark lenses and a black hooded sweatshirt with white sleeves.

Anyone who has any information on this individual is urged to call police immediately at 201-939-2900.
