Drive to benefit MDS victim
A community blood drive will be held this Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Sacred Heart School in Lyndhurst to aid a Lyndhurst resident who was diagnosed with Myleodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). The HLA Registry on Saturday will determine whether community members who come out to support the cause match the tissue type of Al Alberti, the inflicted township resident, husband and father of three.
MDS is a blood related disease and a successful stem cell transplant may be the only hope for Alberti's survival. Potential donors will have an initial cheek swab and if they are found to be a match, a blood donation is required. The cost of the HLA testing is a $30 donation and is tax deductable, but the family is willing to pickup the costs if finances are an issue.
The drive runs from 1-4 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Cafeteria. For more information, call Debbie Alberti at 201-647-6292, Denese Cortellino at 973-981-8003 or John Valente at 201-538-3067.
