Assault
Lyndhurst
On Jan. 8, at approximately 12:24 a.m., police stopped a 2004 Chrysler on the 500-block of 3rd Avenue after it was observed speeding and disregarding proper turns. Upon speaking to the driver, 27-year-old Michael Meyer of Lyndhurst, the officer smelt the odor of alcohol emanating from his breath. Upon asking to perform a sobriety test, officer observed a glass pipe in the side door of the vehicle containing marijuana. Meyer used profanities during the sobriety test and while being processed at headquarters became more aggressive. He at one point picked up a pen and refused to drop it, forcing officers to take him down with force. He was subsequently charged with aggravated assault, DWI, careless driving and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Burglary/Theft

On Jan. 7, juveniles at Lincoln School reported seeing two suspicious Hispanic males run past them and upon investigating, police caught up to them and found that one was carrying a fake Social Security card. Upon further investigation, a witness came forward and identified the two men as trying to steal fish out of his neighbor’s pond. Subsequently, 27-year-old Joaquin Rosales and 42-year-old Jose Cabrera were charged with theft. Rosales was also charged with possessing false government documents and giving a false report to police.
On Jan. 5, at approximately 7:51 a.m., a Jefferson Street resident reported the theft of his Garmin Nuvi 200 GPS unit from his vehicle while it was parked at 308 Hackensack St. The GPS unit was valued at $300.
East Rutherford
On Jan. 10, at approximately 6:09 p.m., the owner of a video production company parked at the Sheraton Hotel, located at 2 Meadowlands Plaza Dr., reported that someone had gained access to his 2004 Chevy by breaking the driver’s side door lock and cutting the interior gate. Stolen from the vehicle was a beta camera, lens, camera battery, camera bag and light. Collaboratively, the equipment was valued at $51,000.
On Jan. 8, at approximately 6:41 p.m., police responded to an apartment at 160 Hackensack St. for the report of a burglary. Upon arrival, the resident told police she had locked the door before going out and when she returned, numerous items were found missing. Stolen was a Lexmark printer valued at $160, two Playstation 2’s valued at $200 each. A Vivitar digital camera valued at $120, an iPod Touch valued at $300 and a mechanical neck massager valued at $50. Also found missing was Toshiba laptop valued at $300, two credit cards, three passports and two pair of cufflinks valued at $100 each. Bergen County investigators along with East Rutherford detectives processed the scene.
On Jan. 6, at approximately 10:52 a.m., an officer observed a 2007 Chevy in the rear of the Homestead Village, located at 300 Route 3 East with it’s trunk opened, driver’s side lock damage. Police made contact with the renter of the vehicle, a Las Vegas resident, who reported a Sony video camera missing from the trunk. The camera was valued between $400-$500.
On Jan. 6, at approximately 10:26 a.m., a Connecticut resident reported that he vehicle was broke into while parked overnight at the Sheraton Hotel, located at 2 Meadowlands Plaza Dr. The complainant reported stolen from the vehicle Apple laptop valued at $4,500 and various other items including a camera. Entry was gained through a shattered driver’s side window.
On Jan. 4, at approximately 9:01 p.m., a complainant stated his 2006 Honda Accord was broken into while parked at Baja Fresh, located at 93 Route 17 South. Taken from the vehicle was a Garmin GPS unit and IBM laptop computer. Entry was gained by shattering the driver’s side window.
On Jan. 4, at approximately 5:21 p.m., a Nebraska resident reported that someone had smashed the rear passenger’s side window on his 2007 Ford while it was parked at the Sheraton Hotel, located at 2 Meadowlands Plaza Dr. Stolen from within was a Find Drive 400 GPS unit valued at $299 and a black briefcase containing medical devices valued at $500.
Lyndhurst
On Jan. 9, at approximately 10:29 a.m., a complainant parked on the 200-block of Van Buren Street reported that someone had smashed the front passenger’s side window to a 2007 Mazda and stole a Magellan Roadside 800 GPS unit and its mount.
On Jan. 7, at approximately 7:43 a.m., a complainant parked on the 50-block of Jackson Place reported that his 2005 Chrysler Pacifica had been ransacked and stolen from inside was a LG cell phone. There were no signs of forced entry to the vehicle.
Rutherford
On Jan. 10, at approximately 1:11 p.m., a deliveryman for Domino’s on Orient Way reported someone stole a $300 GPS unit from his car while it was parked outside the store.
On Jan. 8, at approximately 7:57 p.m., a complainant reported an aluminum box truck ramp was stolen from the side of his house on Marginal Road. The box was about 75 pounds and 30 inches wide.
On Jan. 8, at approximately 4:49 p.m., a representative of Lincoln School reported a lunch aide confiscated a Sony PSP from a student and put it aside. When the lunch aide went to retrieve it to return it to the student at the end of the day it was found to be missing.
On Jan. 7, at approximately 8:59 a.m., a complainant reported someone entered his car and rifled through the glove box and the center console while it was parked on West Van Ness Avenue. Items were found strewn about the car but nothing was reported missing. Police found no sign of forced entry.
On Jan. 7, at approximately 8:36 a.m., a complainant reported someone entered his unlocked car and rifled through his belongings, though nothing was reported missing.
On Jan. 5, at approximately 11:16 p.m., a woman reported someone broke into her car by smashing the rear driver’s side window and stole a shopping bag filled with cat food.
On Jan. 5, at approximately 6:15 a.m., a man reported that sometime between midnight and 4 a.m. someone stole the two front tires from his car while it was parked on Lynn Court. When he discovered the car it was being held up by cinder blocks.
On Jan. 4, at approximately 10:08 a.m., a woman reported a $400 GPS device was stolen from the dashboard of her car while it was parked on Mountain Way. The car had not been locked.
CDS
Carlstadt
On Jan. 8, at approximately 2:10 a.m., an officer observed a 2004 Lexus stopped in the middle of the road near the corner of First Street and Central Avenue. The officer pulled up to the vehicle and noticed the driver concealing items in his center console. Upon approaching the driver, 28-year-old Jack Berckmann of Carlstadt, he was asked about bloodstains on his shirt and he said he had just injected himself with heroin. Police administered a sobriety test and searched the vehicle where they found two glassine Baggies labled "Hennessy", two green vials, an Arizona iced tea can with residue, rolling papers and a contact lens case containing heroin. Subsequent to a complete investigation, Berckmann was arrested and charged with possession of CDS, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle, DWI in a school zone, driving while under the influence of CDS, possession of drug paraphernalia, careless driving and driving with no headlights.

On Jan. 10, at approximately 7:38 p.m., police on patrol at the Quality Inn, located at 10 Polito Ave., observed a 1998 Ford SUV parked in the rear of the lot occupied by two males. Upon questioning the occupants, officers smelt burnt marijuana. A further investigation turned up two marijuana blunts. Nineteen-year-old Deboss Riddick and 20-year-old Andre Riddick, both of Allentown, PA, were arrested and charged for possession of CDS and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle.

On Jan. 8, at approximately 8:02 a.m., a complainant on the 400-block of Lincoln Street reported finding her 2007 Volvo S40 with a broken windshield. Next to the vehicle on the ground was a broken Vodka bottle.
On Jan. 5, at approximately 12:28 p.m., a complainant on the 500-block of Jefferson Street reported that someone had removed the driver’s side mirror on a 2003 Chevy Avalanche.
Lyndhurst
On Jan. 10, at approximately 6:15 p.m., a complainant parked near the corner of Lafayette Place and 6th Avenue reported the rear driver’s side quarter panel had been keyed and there had been damage to the rear windshield wiper on a 2007 Chevy.
On Jan. 9, between 430 and 5 p.m., two complainants parked at Bright Horizons Day Care, located at 9 Polito Ave., reported having the entire passenger’s side of their vehicles scratched. The damage occurred to a 2001 Ford Explorer and 2003 Acura MDX.
On Jan. 6, at approximately 3:16 p.m., a resident of the 400-block of Wilson Avenue reported that someone had punctured an inflatable snow globe Christmas decoration. The lawn ornament was valued at $150.
DWI
East Rutherford
On Jan. 8, at approximately 12:58 a.m., an officer stopped a 1995 Chevy Cavalier on Route 17 after it was observed driving through town going 39 mph in a 25-mph zone, traveling for two blocks over the double yellow line and hitting a curb on the ramp to the highway. After noticing slurred speech and watery eyes on the driver, 46-year-old Arthur Arnold, Jr. of East Rutherford, police administered a sobriety test. Subsequently, Arnold was arrested and charged with DWI. He was also issued summonses for speeding, careless driving and failure to wear a seatbelt.
On Jan. 6, at approximately 3:17 a.m., an officer conducting radar on Paterson Avenue near Poplar Street clocked a 2006 jeep Liberty traveling 50 mph in a 25-mph zone. The officer pursued the vehicle, which failed to stop once at a stop sign, until it parked at 36 Willow Wood Court where it nearly hit the porch of a condo unit. The driver, 26-year-old Brian Keens of Lyndhurst told police he was unable to provide a license because he was suspended. Officers, detecting the odor of alcohol on his breath, issued a sobriety test. Keens was subsequently arrested and charged with DWI. He was also issued summonses for failure to stop, speeding and driving while suspended.
On Jan. 5, at approximately 1:32 a.m., an officer on patrol observed a black 2008 Honda Civic traveling the wrong way on High Street near the corner of Paterson Avenue. Upon pulling over the vehicle, the officer detected the odor of alcohol emanating from the driver’s breath. Subsequent to a sobriety test, 23-year-old Christoph Riemer of Lyndhurst was arrested and charged with DWI. He was also issued summonses for traveling the wrong way on a one-way street and careless driving.
Lyndhurst
On Jan. 6, at approximately 11:36 p.m., an officer on patrol observed a 2001 Nissan SUV swerve onto oncoming traffic near the corner of Orient Way and Second Avenue. Upon stopping the driver, 22-year-old Ayda Velasquez Gutierrez of Newburgh, NY, she told police she was unlicensed. Police subsequently administered a sobriety test and Gutierrez was arrested and charged with DWI. She was also issued summonses for careless driving, driving while on a cell phone and driving while unlicensed.
Fraud
Carlstadt
On Jan. 9, at approximately 4:56 p.m., a resident of the 700-block of Garden Street reported he the victim of fraud by a company known as Newmark Financial Group in Briarcliff Manor, NY. The victim reported applying for a $24,000 loan over the Internet in November and was contact three times afterwards to make payments of $2,193, $864.16 and $1,785 so the loan could be certified. After not receiving a response, he called and told his account was being closed and the money would be refunded. He has yet to receive any funds.
Warrants
Carlstadt
On Jan. 6, at approximately 9:01 a.m., an officer on Route 17 clocked a Toyota Camry traveling 73 mph in a 50-mph zone. After stopping the vehicle and talking to the driver, 30-year-old Fredy Calixto of Passaic, it was found that his license was suspended. Further inquiries revealed he had an outstanding failure to appear warrant for $1,000 out of Lodi. Calixto’s bail was posted and he was also issued summonses for driving while suspended, speeding and driving while unlicensed.
East Rutherford
On Jan. 6, at approximately 11:14 p.m., police conducting a random motor vehicle check on a 1998 Dodge Durango found that it had an expired registration. After computing a deeper inquiry on the driver, 31-year-old Coreen Testa of East Rutherford, it was found she had a suspended driver’s license and an outstanding warrant out of West Paterson for $500. She was able to post bail and was issued summonses for driving while suspended and for the expired registration.
On Jan. 6, at approximately 5:29 p.m., police received a call from Independence Township requesting the arrest of 28-year-old Jerzy Sewastianowicz of Willow Wood Court for an active warrant there for violating a restraining order. Police arrived to his home and spoke to his mother who allowed a search of the home with negative results. Outside, police observed him cautiously walking from Rutherford to his backyard through the woods and once in the yard, was taken down and placed into custody. Throughout the time, he was cursing at officers and caused a brief struggle with an officer. He was charged in East Rutherford with resisting arrest and turned over to Independence on their warrant.
