Assault

East Rutherford

On Dec. 30, at approximately 8:33 a.m., police responded to Boiling Springs Garden, located at 147 Hackensack St., for the report of a tenant that had been assaulted by another tenant. Upon arrival, the complainant told police that he had been in a verbal argument with a female tenant who had subsequently slapped him in the face. He was expected to sign a complaint against her for simple assault.

On Dec. 29, at approximately 6:04 a.m., police responded to the Exxon gas station, located at 185 Route 17 South where the proprietor said he was confronted by an unknown female who wished to purchase a cup of coffee. The complainant said he charged her $1.39 and she disputed the price and threw the coffee in his face and body. The complainant saw the license of the vehicle and subsequently signed a complaint for assault against the woman identified under the vehicle’s registration.

Burglary/Theft

Carlstadt

On Dec. 28, at approximately 6:32 a.m., a complainant parked on the 500-block of Union Street reported that the passenger’s side window of his 1997 Toyota had been smashed and taken from inside was a Garmin 330 GPS unit.

On Dec. 27, at approximately 10:22 a.m., a Quebec, Canada resident reported that there had been a theft from her room at the Holiday Inn Express, located at 100 Paterson Plank Road. The complainant said she had come back to her room after eating breakfast to find a maid who had handed her a cell phone she claimed to have found on the floor. The complainant said the phone and an Apple iPod and iPod case, valued collaboratively at $270 were all on a table when she left, but the iPod and case were missing.

East Rutherford

On Jan. 4, at approximately 5:50 a.m., a complainant at 107 Carlton Ave. reported that his 2004 Chevy Impala had been stolen. The complainant also informed police that he was behind on payments, so repossession has not been ruled out.

On Dec. 31, at approximately 7:40 p.m., police spoke with a resident at 14 John St. that said he had waited all day for a UPS package and it never arrived. The package, according to UPS tracking had however been signed for earlier in the day by a name that matched the complainant’s upstairs neighbor, who was not home at the time. UPS was contacted to make them aware of the theft.

On Dec. 31, at approximately 9:53 a.m., a customer of BJ’s Wholesale Club, located at 300 Route 17 North, reported to police that he had come out of the store to find his 1995 Plymouth Voyager missing. The complainant, a North Arlington resident, said there were tools and a tree stand inside the vehicle as well.

On Dec. 31, at approximately 9:03 a.m., an Oakland resident parked on the 50-block of Locust Lane reported that his employer’s 2005 Ford had been broken into. The complainant found the passenger’s side window shattered and taken from inside was a Magellan GPS system valued at $200.

On Dec. 30, at approximately 1:36 a.m., a complainant on the 100-block of Clinton Place reported that someone had stole his medication between the late hours of Dec. 28 and noontime Dec. 29. Missing was a bottle containing 88 Xanax pills and bottle of Vicodin containing 75 pills.

On Dec. 29, at approximately 10:40 p.m., a New York City resident reported the theft of a black cloth bag containing several maps valued at $150, a Nextel Motorola cell phone valued at $100 and a TomTom GPS unit valued at $300 from his 2007 Lincoln Town Car. The vehicle had been parked at the Sheraton Hotel, located at 2 Meadowlands Plaza Drive and entry was gained by way of a smashed front passenger’s side window.

On Dec. 29, at approximately 1:04 p.m., a Hasbrouck Heights resident reported that someone had broken into his 2006 Jeep Liberty while it was parked at BJ’s Wholesale Club, located at 300 Route 17 North. Entry was gained by way of a smashed passenger’s side window and taken from the vehicle was a TomTom GPS unit valued at $200.

On Dec. 28, at approximately 11:44 a.m., police responded to Matheson Tri-Gas Inc., located at 932 Route 120, where a complainant told police someone had entered the property by way of cutting the chain to the gate. Once inside, the actor(s) removed approximately 100 feet of two-inch copper water pipe from the warehouse.

Lyndhurst

On Jan. 2, at approximately 7 a.m., two separate complainants parked at the Quality Inn reported the thefts from their vehicles. One complainant, a Green Brook resident, reported the theft of a $500 Sony GPS unit and a $200 cell phone from a 2004 GMC. The other was a Lyndhurst resident who reported the theft of a Garmin GPS unit from a 2001 Nissan. Both had shattered windows. Police investigated the area and found a 2008 Honda belonging to a Minnesota resident across the street at the Courtyard by Marriott that also had a shattered window. Stolen from that vehicle was a $213 GPS unit.

On Dec. 30, at approximately 12:24 a.m., a complainant parked near the corner of Tontine and Webster Avenues reported the theft of a Garmin GPS unit from a 2008 Nissan. The vehicle’s passenger’s side window had been smashed.

On Dec. 29, at approximately 2:31 p.m., an officer on patrol noticed a suspicious box truck pull up to the loading dock at 1150 Valley Brook Avenue and load up three truck tires. Upon further investigation, the driver, 29-year-old Fekri Mustafa of North Bergen, was charged with theft of the tires and driving while suspended. He posted a $500 cash bail and was released.

Rutherford

On Jan. 4, at approximately 10:08 a.m., a complainant reported a $400 GPS device was stolen from the dashboard of his car sometime between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. while parked on Mountain Way. The car was unlocked.

On Jan. 4, at approximately 9:55 a.m., a complainant reported that figurines she was supposed to receive in the mail were apparently stolen from her front porch sometime between Oct. 1 and Dec. 1.

On Jan. 4, at approximately 7:39 a.m., an officer observed that two tires had been stolen from a car parked on the second level of the Kip Garage. The owner of the vehicle was out of town at the time.

On Jan. 2, at approximately 11:47 a.m., a complainant reported his rental car was broken into while parked at the Renaissance Hotel. The passenger’s side window was smashed and a GPS unit was stolen.

On Jan. 2, at approximately 6:23 p.m., a complainant reported his car was broken into while parked at the Renaissance Hotel. The passenger’s side window was broken and a GPS device was stolen. Upon reviewing a security video, police observed a dark-colored SUV in the lot around the time of the theft but no further details could be made out.

On Dec. 31, at approximately 11:56 a.m., a complainant reported his car had been broken into sometime between 9:45 and 9:52 a.m. The driver’s side door lock was broken and two GPS devices together valued at $1300 were stolen from the vehicle’s center console along with a pair of prescription sunglasses and a bag full of cold weather gear.

On Dec. 31, at approximately 10:52 a.m., an employee of Stadium Auto Mall on Route 17 reported an electronic automatic temperature control unit valued at $3,000 was stolen from a new vehicle sometime between Dec. 27 and Dec. 31.

On Dec. 30, at approximately 3:42 p.m., a complainant reported a green bike was stolen from the garage of his Donaldson Avenue residence sometime between Dec. 29 and the day of the report.

On Dec. 30, at approximately 11:30 a.m., a complainant reported someone broke into his rental car while it was parked at the Renaissance Hotel. The door handle was broken and a GPS device was taken from the vehicle’s center console.

CDS

Lyndhurst

On Jan. 3, at approximately 11:14 p.m., an officer observed a suspicious vehicle with its headlights out pull into a driveway on Copeland Avenue near the corner of Riverside Avenue. The officer then observed the vehicle pull out and drive away without its headlights on. Upon stopping the vehicle, it was found that the driver, 32-year-old Jessica Cruz of Paterson was carrying marijuana. She was subsequently charged with possession of CDS and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle.

Criminal Mischief

Carlstadt

On Jan. 1, at approximately 3:21 p.m., a complainant on the 400-block of Fourth Street reported that his wife had waken him around 3 a.m. that morning after she heard something outside break. The woman then heard a female voice say "What did you do that for?" and saw three individuals fleeing from the home. An inspection revealed that the complainants’ taillight on a 2007 Mazda CX-7 had been cracked.

North Arlington

On Jan. 1, a resident reported an unknown actor had smashed the passenger’s side window to a vehicle parked on Beech Street. Nothing appeared to be missing from the vehicle.

On Jan. 2, at approximately 7:34 a.m., police observed street signs spray painted with graffiti in the areas of Fisher Place and Stevens Place, Roosevelt Street and Stevens Place and Pershing Place and Stevens Place. Unknown actors spray painted "MS-13" on the street signs, the name of a known gang. Police contacted the county gang unit.

On Jan. 2, unknown actors smashed the passenger’s side glass window to a vehicle and looked through the glove box and console. Nothing appeared to be taken from the vehicle.

Rutherford

On Jan. 1, at approximately 7:01 a.m., a woman reported the passenger’s side rearview mirror on her car was broken sometime between 10 p.m. the previous night and the next day while parked on Wood Street.

DWI

Carlstadt

On Jan. 1, at approximately 9:46 a.m., an officer on patrol witnessed a Honda Civic travelling near the corner of Route 120 and 20th Street with a headlight out. The officer proceeded to pull the vehicle over on the Murray Hill Parkway in East Rutherford. When questioning the driver, 52-year-old Grazyna Strzalkowska of Manalpan, the officer smelt the odor of alcohol emanating from her breath. Subsequent to a sobriety test, Strzalkowska was arrested and charged with DWI. She was also issued a summons for failure to properly maintain lamps.

Lyndhurst

On Jan. 4, at approximately 2:03 a.m., an officer of patrol on Riverside Avenue was nearly hit head-on when a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction crossed the double yellow lines. The officer turned around and stopped the vehicle driven by 22-year-old Joseph Scalchi of Rutherford. Upon further investigation, Scalchi was arrested and charged with DWI. He was also issued summonses for careless driving and driving while suspended.

North Arlington

On Jan. 1, at approximately 3 a.m., police stopped 32-year-old Kelly Bilger of Lyndhurst for a motor vehicle violation at the corner of Schuyler Avenue and the Belleville Turnpike. Police determined she was under the influence of alcohol. She was arrested, processed and released to a responsible party. She was also issued summonses for refusal to submit to a breath test, careless driving and driving an uninsured vehicle.

On Dec. 30, police stopped 20-year-old Michael Vieira of Warren for a motor vehicle violation on River Road. Police determined Vieira was under the influence. He was arrested, processed and released to a responsible party.

Miscellaneous

Rutherford

On Jan. 1, at approximately 4:34 p.m., 37-year-old Dennis McKeon of Rutherford was arrested at the Rite Aid on Park Avenue. McKeon, who was apparently intoxicated, had reportedly been expelled from the store twice earlier in the day for harassing customers and told not to return. McKeon was issued a summons for defiant trespass.

Warrants

East Rutherford

On Dec. 30, at approximately 10:59 p.m., police pulled over a 1992 Pontiac near 250 Park Ave. for traveling the wrong way on a one way street. The driver, 34-year-old Bridget Fortunato of Waldwick could not produce a driver’s license or registration. Officers checks motor vehicle records and it was found that Fortunato had three outstanding warrants, two out of Glen Rock for $250 apiece and one out of Midland Park for $500. She was brought to headquarters where Glen Rock police responded to pick her up.

On Dec. 30, at approximately 3:55 p.m., am officer on patrol on Locust Lane performed a random computer check of a 2002 Mazda 626 and found that the driver had a suspended license and two outstanding warrants out of Wallington. Police subsequently pulled over Brian Foley of Wallington and issued him a summons for driving while suspended. Wallington police confirmed the warrants and responded to the scene to take custody of Foley.

Rutherford

On Jan. 3, at approximately 9:23 p.m., police received a call from the Mercer County Jail regarding 55-year-old Ralph D. Burke of Trenton. Burke had an outstanding $533 warrant out of Rutherford for possession of CDS in a motor vehicle. Burke was transferred into the custody of Rutherford police and subsequently transported to the Bergen County Jail.
