Assault
East Rutherford
On Dec. 20, at approximately 1:20 p.m., police responded to 159 Park Ave. for the report of a possible assault. Upon arrival, police met with the complainant who state he was involved in a verbal argument with 45-year-old Gail Vlavianos of East Rutherford over cigarettes when she became violent and punched him three times in the face causing swelling to his eye. Vlavianos was subsequently charged with simple assault.
Burglary/Theft
East Rutherford
On Dec. 25, at approximately 12:21 p.m., a complainant from Port St. Lucie, FL reported that his 2007 Toyota had been broken into while parked at the Sheraton, located at 2 Meadowlands Plaza Drive. Entry was gained by breaking the rear passenger’s side window and taken from the vehicle was a black bag containing Christmas presents.
On Dec. 25, at approximately 12:33 a.m., police responded to 367 Grove St. where a complainant said he observed two males attempting to steal his 1988 Ford. The complainant said he confronted the men and was then assaulted before they fled. The complainant told police he found a screwdriver stuck in the vehicle’s ignition.
On Dec. 21, at approximately 6:08 p.m., an Astoria, NY resident reported that his 2003 Lincoln had been broken into while it was parked at Lowe’s, located at 300 Route 17 North. Missing from the vehicle was the complainant’s wallet containing numerous credit cards, his driver’s license, registration and insurance card. Also stolen was a Garmin GPS unit valued at $1,100. Police observed no sign of forced entry to the vehicle. The complainant said he may have left the doors unlocked.
Lyndhurst
On Dec. 26, at approximately 5:24 p.m., a Trenton resident reported that the window on his 1982 Mercedes had been shattered and someone stole his GPS holder from inside the vehicle while it was parked at the Burger King at the corner of Park and Rutherford Avenues.
On Dec. 25, police responded to a burglary at Paradise Liquors, located at 509 Stuyvesant Avenue. Upon arrival, it was discovered that two suspects had used a ladder to access the roof of the store, then cut a hole in the roof to gain access inside. Missing from within the store was $700 in cash from the register and an additional $2,000 in lottery tickets. The suspects were unable to gain access to the ATM machine. Bergen County investigators arrived to process the scene and are currently viewing surveillance tape to aid in the investigation.
On Dec. 25, at approximately 1:33 p.m., a Fairfax, VA resident reported that his 2004 Cadillac was broken into while parked at the Courtyard by Marriott. Entry was gained by punching the door lock and taken from the vehicle was a $3,000 laptop computer, $1,200 digital camcorder and potable DVD player.
On Dec. 22, at approximately 11:03 a.m., a Blakeslee, PA resident reported that a 2007 Dodge van parked at the Courtyard by Marriott was broken into by way of a punched door lock. Taken from within the vehicle was a GPS unit valued at $300 and a cell phone valued at $100.
On Dec. 22, at approximately 12:17 a.m., a complainant on the 600-block of Ten Eyck Avenue reported the theft of a GPS unit from a 2003 Chrysler.
Rutherford
On Dec. 26, at approximately 5:10 p.m., a man reported someone broke into his car sometime between 4:30 and 5 p.m. while it was parked on Van Riper Avenue. Officers found the passenger’s side window smashed and a GPS, a Policeman’s Benevolent Association (PBA) window shield, a cellular phone and a handicap placard were all reported missing.
On Dec. 21, at approximately 12:20 p.m., a student at St. Mary’s High School reported her wallet was stolen from her desk sometime in the morning during homeroom while at school. The wallet contained a New Jersey driver’s license, a school identification card, $50 in cash and two credit cards.
Criminal Mischief
East Rutherford
On Dec. 25, at approximately 7:05 p.m., a complainant from the 300-block of Laurel Place reported that her daughter’s 2001 Mitsubishi had been hit with eggs while the family was away.
On Dec. 23, at approximately 1:51 p.m., a complainant reported that someone had let the air out of two and removed the hubcaps from four tires on his 1994 Mazda while it was parked on Hoboken Avenue.
On Dec. 23, at approximately 1:34 p.m., a complainant on the 60-block of Prospect Terrace reported someone had broken the driver’s side window on his 1994 Mazda.
Lyndhurst
On Dec. 25, six separate complainants from the 500-block of Freeman Street reported that the tires on their vehicles had been slashed. All complainants, reporting the incidents between 9 a.m. and noon, reported that the front passenger’s side tire was slashed.
On Dec. 21, at approximately 8:16 p.m., a complainant on the 500-block of Freeman Street reported someone had scratched an "X" into the driver’s side door of a 2008 Nissan.
On Dec. 21, at approximately 3:15 p.m., a complainant on the 500-block of Freeman Street reported that someone had scratched an "X" in the driver’s side door of both a 2002 Chrysler minivan and 1989 Dodge minivan.
North Arlington
On Dec. 22, at approximately 6:50 p.m., a resident of Beaver Avenue, near the corner of Ridge Road reported that someone had cut the Christmas lights that adorned the home’s railings.
Rutherford
On Dec. 27, at approximately 11 a.m., police received an anonymous phone call reporting that four parked vehicles on St. Clair Avenue had been pelted with eggs.
On Dec. 24, at approximately 8 a.m., a man reported his Hummer had been scratched all along its left side sometime overnight while it was parked on Mortimer Avenue.
On Dec. 23, at approximately 11:37 a.m., a complainant reported that someone had spray-painted a long red line all along the white fence on his property on Prospect Place.
On Dec. 23, at approximately 10:14 a.m., a complainant reported the door to the fence on his property on Chestnut Street had been damaged. The door to white fence in the rear lot of his property had been taken off its hinges and thrown to the ground.
On Dec. 22, at approximately 11:13 p.m., an officer on patrol reported four spindles were broken and two were loose at the gazebo in Lincoln Park. The broken spindles were delivered to the Department of Public Works.
DWI
East Rutherford
On Dec. 21, at approximately 10:39 p.m., police arrested 26-year-old Jorge Maldonado of Garfield and charged him with DWI near the corner of Hoboken Road and High Street for operating a 2006 Ford while intoxicated.
On Dec. 20, at approximately 8:25 p.m., police responded to the corner of Paterson Avenue and Franklin Place for the call of a motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, police found a one vehicle overturned and was able to extradite the driver. The other driver involved, 23-year-old Krzysztof Chojnowski of Jersey City was arrested and charged with DWI.
Lyndhurst
On Dec. 21, at approximately 11:43 p.m., police initiated a motor vehicle stop at the corner of 5th and Summit Avenues. Subsequent to speaking with the driver, police found that he was intoxicated and had a suspended license. Subsequently, 25-year-old Peter Adames of Lyndhurst was arrested and charged with DWI, driving while suspended and possession of drug paraphernalia after police found copper colored Brillo in the vehicle, which is known to be used to smoke crack/cocaine from. Police also issued a summons to the passenger, 26-year-old Ryan Keens of Lyndhurst for possession of drug paraphernalia. Adames was processed and turned over to Clifton police for a $3,500 outstanding warrant he had there.
On Dec. 21, at approximately 10:03 p.m., police stopped a vehicle at the corner of Polito Avenue and Wall Street West after it was observed with an expired registration. After talking with the driver, 26-year-old Rafael Made of Passaic, he was subsequently arrested and charged with DWI. He was also issued a summons for failure to maintain lamps.
Fraud
Lyndhurst
On Dec. 26, police in cooperation with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office arrested 50-year-old Matthew Neuren of Tuxedo Park for theft by deception. Authorities said an investigation revealed that he had used the checking account of a Lyndhurst resident to make purchases via the Internet and use one check to receive cash. The total known monetary loss for the Lyndhurst resident is $1,700 at this time. Neuren was released on his on recognizance.
North Arlington
On Dec. 26, at approximately 11:25 a.m., a Ridge Park Drive resident notified police that he just evaded becoming the victim of a fraud. The resident told police that he had been on the Internet corresponding with what he thought was the real company National Oilwell Varco out of Houston, TX. He later received a check from the company for $3,500 and they asked him to cash it, keep 10 percent for himself and send the rest to an address in Nigeria. The resident caught wind it may have been fraud and held off on cashing the check.
Rutherford
On Dec. 22, at approximately 12:20 p.m., a Raymond Avenue resident reported he found a debit charge on his Sovereign Bank check card for $717. Records showed the charge was made in France on Dec. 21. The bank called to verify the charge and the man said it wasn’t his and that his identity must have been stolen.
Miscellaneous
Lyndhurst
On Dec. 25, at approximately 8:10 p.m., police responded to Ridge Road on the report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, it was determined by police and witnesses that a 53-year-old male driver from West Milford was driving north on Ridge Road near the corner of Freeman Street and struck a 65-year-old woman who had not looked before entering the roadway. According to police, the woman was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center with a non-life threatening head injury.
North Arlington
On Dec. 26, at approximately 8:47 a.m., police were notified that a company was illegally using water in front of 9 Porete Ave. C and L Sweeper Service out of Jackson had hooked up to a hydrant and upon calling the Passaic Valley Water Commission, it was determined they had no permission. The company immediately ceased the operation.
Rutherford
On Dec. 23, at approximately 6:45 p.m., a dispute arose between a customer and a gas station attendant at the Delta gas station on Rutherford Avenue. The customer said he asked for $20 worth of gas, gave the attendant the money and only received $10 worth. An officer arrived at the scene, the dispute was explained and the attendant decided to give the customer $10 more of gas.
Warrants
East Rutherford
On Dec. 24, at approximately 3:25 p.m., police received a call from State Troopers that they had 30-year-old Malik Corbitt stopped on the Garden State Parkway and that he had a $1,654 warrant out of the borough. He was brought to headquarters where he was processed and sent to the Bergen County Jail.
Lyndhurst
On Dec. 26, police observed Stephen Pepe, a resident of the 500-block of Freeman Street consuming alcohol while near the corner of 5th Avenue and Ridge Road. He was taken into headquarters for consuming alcohol in public and there, police found that he had a $2,500 outstanding warrant out of Bloomfield. He was subsequently turned over to Bloomfield police.
North Arlington
On Dec. 23, at approximately 1:30 a.m., police ran the plates on a vehicle traveling on River Road and determined the driver, 54-year-old Rene Pereira of Newark had a suspended license. Pereira was brought to headquarters where he was also found to have an outstanding warrant for $250 out of Piscataway. He posted bail and was released with a summons for driving while suspended.
