Lady Dogs now 4-0

(by Edward Kensik - December 26, 2007)

Dominating BCSL American

Becton’s girls basketball team knows what they are going to have to when they face St. Mary’s later this season.

The Lady Wildcats could not keep up with the high-flying, high-pressing Lady Gaels in the Dec. 18 BCSL National teams that were expected to vie for the divisional title.

But right now, St. Mary’s is all by itself, if not in record, but in stature. The Lady Gaels the previous week ran off the court, Secaucus, one of the other favorites in the league and now it was Becton. St. Mary’s would pull away early in the 69-32 victory in East Rutherford.

Three Gaels scored in double figure, led by Afreyea Tolbert with 18 points while Marina Ellerbe and Shanice Hawkins chipped in a dozen and 10 points each.

Becton has been looking for another offensive power source other than Jessica Knapp. Knapp had a dozen points while Keri Ryan added six points for the Lady Wildcats.

A couple days later both St. Mary’s and Becton won their respective games. The Gaels won at home against fellow South Bergenite school, North Arlington, 74-37, to raise its record to 3-0. The Wildcats rebounded with a 58-30 win at home against Wood-Ridge. Becton was 2-1 after the victory.

Against Wood-Ridge the Wildcats received scoring outside of Knapp. Lauren Cosentino had a game-high 17 points while Knapp had a dozen points. Becton was ahead 18-5 after the first quarter. Ewelina Marut added nine points.

In the contest between St. Mary’s and North Arlington, the Vikings (1-2) continued to look for its second win of the season. This time it was Ellerbe leading the Gaels scoring sheet, with 19 points while Tolbert added 15. Tara Fisher had a dozen points to lead the Lady Vikings in scoring.

Rutherford (4-0) continued to dominate the BCSL American as they raised its record to 4-0 after defeating Tenafly, 57-30, on the road on Thursday. The Bulldogs only led 20-14 at halftime, but pulled away in the second half on a 20-4 run in the third quarter.

A trio of Rutherford players scored in double figures led by Taylor Wootten with 15 points. Jacki Mann and Brittany O’Keefe had 12 and 10 points respectively in the divisional game.

In previous years, it would be a fight to the finish when Rutherford and River Dell played. This year though the Lady Bulldogs are up and River Dell is down. The Lady Bulldogs defeated River Dell, 37-15. Mann had 15 points to lead Rutherford in scoring.
