Assault

North Arlington

On Dec. 9, at approximately 10:41 p.m., officers responded to the parking lot of Foodtown at 1 Schuyler Ave. on a report of a man passed out in a gray jeep. Police believed the man was intoxicated and attempted to wake him. Police called medical services and woke the man, 31-year-old David Dechert of Carlstadt, at which point he became hostile toward the officers. The ambulance arrived to take Dechert to the hospital and he jumped from the ambulance and refused to cooperate. Police said he charged the officers and began attacking them. An officer injured his knee in an attempt to subdue Dechert and was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center. He was arrested and tried kicking out the rear window of the police car on his way to headquarters. He was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and criminal mischief. Bail was set at $5,000 with a 10 percent option and he was released after posting $500 cash bail.

Burglary/Theft

East Rutherford

On Dec. 12, at approximately 1:34 p.m., police responded to Lowe’s, located at 150 Route 17 North, for the report of numerous shoplifting incidents. Loss prevention reported on three separate dates, they noticed various DEWALT power tools missing from their boxes in the tool section and on each day, observed a male wearing the same clothes leaving the store with bulges in his pocket. He was once observed entering a Pontiac G6 registered to a Lyndhurst resident and before loss prevention could catch him on the third day, he entered a Rutherford Taxi. In total, five drills were taken valued cumulatively at $1,385. Lyndhurst police found on file a report of the owner of the registered Pontiac G6 that her boyfriend, 27-year-old Dominick Labarbiera of Wood-Ridge had been taking the vehicle without her permission. He was subsequently arrested at his home on Dec. 12 and later told police he had stolen the merchandise to support a heroin addiction and sold the items to 41-year-old Glen Kologie, owner of Glen’s Automotive in Rutherford. Police responded to the shop on Dec. 13 where they subsequently found the items. Kologie was arrested for receiving stolen property and released. Labarbiera was remanded to the Bergen County Jail.

On Dec. 12, at approximately 8:57 a.m., officers responded to Lowe’s, located at 150 Route 17 North, for the report of a dispute in front of the store. Upon arrival, police talked to a loss prevention manager who said an employee was becoming unruly after being questioned about a theft. Subsequently, 33-year-old Nancy Polanco-Rivera of Clifton was arrested for shoplifting a $138 Portfolio Chandelier.

On Dec. 10, at approximately 7:49 p.m., a resident of 5 Herrick St. reported the theft of several items from his apartment. The complainant told police that he had noticed a black pouch missing from his bedroom drawer containing credit cards and a Social Security card. Soon after, one credit card company notified him that someone was attempting to make transactions with the card. He cancelled the card and was to report to Hackensack to deal with the stolen Social Security card.

On Dec. 8, at approximately 11:08 a.m., police responded to BJ’s Wholesale Club, located at 300 Route 17 North, for the report of a stolen cellular phone. The complainant told police that someone had swiped a $370 LG EnV off a display counter.

On Dec. 7, at approximately 7:21 a.m., police responded to the Homestead Village, located at 300 Route 3 East, for the complaint of a theft from auto. The complainant told police someone had gained entrance to his 1993 Honda Accord through the driver’s side window jam and stole a Pioneer stereo valued at $600.

Lyndhurst

On Dec. 12, security at ShopRite, located at 540 New York Ave., called police to report a shoplifter. The complainant told police that 52-year-old Rita Pluchino of Lyndhurst had been observed on camera picking up a $19.95 bag of shrimp. Following that, Pluchino was seen opening her purse and pulled out an empty bag with false receipt attached and place the shrimp in it. She was issued a summons for shoplifting.

On Dec. 11, at approximately 7:11 p.m., a resident of the 200-block of Summit Avenue reported that an unknown actor had entered an unlocked 2006 Toyota in the residences’ driveway and removed a Garmin Street Pilot GPS unit valued at $400. The complainant also reported that the center console had been damaged.

On Dec. 8, at approximately 10:10 a.m., a resident of the 100-block of Jay Avenue reported that her wallet had been stolen when she left it behind at Kearny Federal Savings Bank, located at 307 Stuyvesant Ave. The woman reported leaving the black Coach wallet on a corner table in the bank and when she returned, it was gone. Police are looking at surveillance tapes to aid their investigation. The wallet contained between $30 to $40 in cash, a Social Security Card, driver’s license and various credit cards.

North Arlington

On Dec. 7, at approximately 6:50 a.m., owners of a Porete Avenue business returned to the business after leaving at 6:21 p.m. the night before and found a trailer lock on the ground. A Stihl saw, valued at $912, was missing from the trailer. Unknown actors also broke into a panel truck and stole another Stihl saw, also valued at $912, and an impact hammer drill, valued at $698.

On Dec. 12, at approximately 11:32 a.m., a victim reported parking a 2001 White Ford 350 van on William Street off of the Belleville Turnpike on Dec. 11 at 10 p.m. Upon returning the following morning, the van was missing.

Carlstadt

On Dec. 6, at approximately 12:35 p.m., a victim reported a pocketbook was stolen from the Dollar Wave at 326 Garden St. Video surveillance cameras from the store revealed the victim left the pocketbook in an aisle. Several minutes later, a black female wearing a long tan winter coat in her mid-30s to late 40s took off her coat and placed the pocketbook on her shoulder before putting the coat back on. The woman then paid cash for items and left the store, according to video surveillance. The pocketbook contained several credit cards, a checkbook and 40 prescription pills of Oxycontin valued at $200.

Rutherford

On Dec. 12, at approximately 4:41 p.m., residents of Hackett Place called the police to report that a friend of their juvenile daughter borrowed her cheerleading shirt and wouldn’t return it. Police went to the friend’s house to retrieve it and no charges were filed.

On Dec. 12, at approximately 7:51 a.m., a man reported his 1994 Plymouth Caravan was stolen sometime between 11:30 p.m. the previous night and the time of the report while it was parked on East Gouverneur Avenue. The car was valued at $1,500.

On Dec. 10, at approximately noon, police received a report that someone stole about 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel by siphoning it out of three trucks parked at the Meadows Office Complex on Route 17 North. The fuel was valued at about $3,000.

On Dec. 9, at approximately 6:45 p.m., a woman reported her purse was stolen while she was at a party at the After Athens restaurant on Park Avenue. The purse was valued at $400 and contained $20 in cash, a cell phone, a driver’s license, 10 credit cards, her keys and her husband’s Newark Police identification card.

On Dec. 9, at approximately 6:15 p.m., employees at the New China Inn on Park Avenue reported a theft. A male entered the store and said he was there to pick up an order for John. The employee went to find the order and when he returned to the counter the man was stuffing money taken from the tip box into his pockets and ran out the door. About $50 in cash was stolen. Police have identified a suspect and charges are pending.

Rutherford

On Dec. 9, at approximately 8:45 p.m., an off-duty Essex County Sheriff’s Department officer reported someone on the roof of the Renaissance Hotel. Police responded and found 28-year-old Joseph Fleming of Milford, PA on the roof in possession of a bag of marijuana. Fleming was charged with CDS possession (under 50 grams) and released on summons.

Criminal Mischief

East Rutherford

On Dec. 13, at approximately 9:48 p.m., a resident of the 100-block of Van Winkle Street reported that someone had thrown a rock and broke a glass window on his front porch. The rock was found between the glass and window insulation.

On Dec. 11, at approximately 5:48 p.m., a resident of an apartment at 200 Paterson Ave. reported that he had returned to work to find a rock lying in his living room and the window shattered.

On Dec. 10, at approximately 5:53 p.m., a resident on the 200-block of Main Street reported that someone had thrown an egg at his first floor window. The complainant reported seeing three juveniles in the area. The complainant reported two days earlier that he had a rock thrown through his front picture window. A neighbor then saw two youths running from the area.

Rutherford

On Dec. 10, at approximately 11:10 p.m., an officer reported several spindles were kicked out from the railing of the gazebo in Lincoln Park.

On Dec. 8, at approximately 11:07 p.m., an officer reported three spindles were kicked out from the railing of the gazebo in Lincoln Park.

Disorderly Conduct

Lyndhurst

On Dec. 13, at approximately 9:38 p.m., police responded to the Liquor Shed, located at 740 Ridge Road, for a report of an assault. Kristie Gerhold, 28, of Lyndhurst said when she was told by the owner that she could not use a pay phone, he punched her in the eye. Police observed swelling on her eye, but it appeared as if it were several days old. Someone accompanying Gerhold told police she had received the bruise elsewhere. Gerhold subsequently became combative with officers, yelling profanities at them and the owner. Police brought her to headquarters where he behavior persisted. She was charged with disorderly conduct.

DWI

Lyndhurst

On Dec. 7, at approximately 10:35 p.m., police were called to a two-car accident near the corner of Polito Avenue and Wall Street West. Upon speaking to the driver of a 2007 Audi involved in the crash, they smelt the odor of alcohol emanating from the breath of 28-year-old Alexis Ortis of the Bronx. Subsequent to failing a sobriety test, Ortis was arrested and charged with DWI and refusal to submit to a breath test. He was also issued a summons for DWI.

On Dec. 7, at approximately 10:13 p.m., police responded to the report of an accident near the corner of Valley Brook and Watson Avenues. Upon arrival, police questioned the driver of a 2007 Dodge, 41-year-old Alfred Gabriele, a smelt the odor of alcohol emanating from his breath. Subsequent to a sobriety test, Gabriele was arrested and charged with DWI.

North Arlington

On Dec. 12, at approximately 4:48 p.m., police responded to Schuyler Avenue at Sylvia Place on a report of a motor vehicle accident. Thirty-seven-year-old Sara Ficke of Lyndhurst had struck a telephone pole in a 2004 Chevy Impala. Police said she appeared to be disoriented. A witness saw Ficke drive straight and bounce off the curb before hitting the pole. Police believe she was under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS). She was transferred to the hospital and submitted a blood sample. She was transported to the police station and issued summonses for driving while intoxicated, driving with a revoked license, careless driving and being under the influence of CDS. Police also discovered she had four traffic warrants: a $1,000 warrant in Cedar Grove, a $300 warrant in Newark, a $500 warrant out of Mahwah and a $113 warrant out of Paterson. She was turned over to Mahwah police on their warrant after processing.

Carlstadt

On Dec. 10, at approximately 1:05 a.m., officers on patrol observed a White Infiniti G20 travelling southbound on Washington Avenue without its headlights on. Police stopped the driver, 23-year-old Barbara Questel of Secaucus, and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath. After failing a field sobriety test, she was placed under arrested for driving while intoxicated and her vehicle was impounded.

Fraud

Rutherford

On Dec. 10, at approximately 2:50 p.m., a man reported someone used his ID to open multiple fraudulent charge accounts at several stores. Over $12,000 in charges had been made to accounts at Home Depot, Kohl’s and American Financing.
