Burglary/Theft

East Rutherford

On Nov. 29, at approximately 6:39 a.m., a complainant at 145 Everett Place reported that someone had removed the front and rear passenger’s side tires off his vehicle overnight. The complainant reported that a cement block off a wall at 152 Everett Place had been used to prop up the vehicle.

Between Nov. 26 and 28, two residents of an apartment building at 194 Uhland Street reported that their apartments had been burglarized. The building, which was subject to a fire two weeks ago, has been having work done by several contractors, according to the two complainants. One resident came home on Nov. 28 after having been displaced by the fire to find her grandson’s $300 Xbox 360 and 25 video games missing. On Nov. 28, another resident reported finding several missing items from her apartment. They included a Nipponslo Pachislo antique slot machine valued at $550, $350 worth of coins from the machine, a Sanyo surround sound system, Sony DVD player, poker table with chips, 300 DVDs and $350 in cash and jewelry.

On Nov. 27, at approximately 1:11 p.m., a CVS Pharmacy manager caught two Hispanic males that had been caught on video the prior day stealing once again shoving an unknown amount of cosmetics into their pants before fleeing the store. The day before, the manager arrived at the store to find the cosmetic aisle missing a significant amount of merchandise. Upon looking at the video, the manager saw the two men concealing several items in their clothing. An inventory of the aisle revealed that the two men had taken a total of $1,177.44 worth of goods. The two same men were also identified on cameras in the Wood Ridge CVS.

Lyndhurst

On Dec. 27, at approximately 8:41 a.m., the proprietor of a hot dog trailer on the 700-block of Marin Avenue reported that someone had forced entry into the trailer and stole approximately $70 worth of food and beverages.

On Dec. 27, at approximately 9:02 a.m., a Cincinnati, OH complainant reported that his company’s 2005 Nissan had been broken into while it was parked at the Courtyard by Marriott on Polito Avenue. Entry to the vehicle was gained through damaging the driver’s side door lock. Taken from the vehicle was a leather jacket valued at $200 and electrical tools valued in excess of $3,000.

North Arlington

On Nov. 25, at approximately 3:04 p.m., officers responded to a residence on River Road near Hedden Terrace on a report of a burglary. The victim returned home at 2 a.m., entered his house and heard loud noises. He observed the air conditioning unit had been knocked out of the window and left on the living room floor. He did not observe anyone in the apartment. The front door had been unlocked and opened. The victim did not report anything stolen.

Rutherford

On Nov. 25, at approximately 6 p.m., a complainant reported an unknown actor stole her purse while at the Laundromat at 120 Park Ave. Police watched the video and identified the actor as 31-year-old James Manieri of Rutherford. Police also discovered Manieri had taken the victim’s credit card and went to Rite Aid and Chris’s Pizza, charging $1,400 to the card. He was charged with theft, credit card theft, forgery, identity theft, use of a stolen credit card and possession of hypodermic needles. He was taken to Bergen County Jail in lieu of paying $25,000 cash bail.

On Nov. 26, at approximately 10 a.m., the manager of Steam Master at 275 Veteran’s Blvd. Reported an actor stole a 30-yard waste compact Dumpster, valued at $10,000, between Nov. 23 and Nov. 26.

On Nov. 26, at approximately 1:15 p.m., a complainant reported dropping off a 2004 Jeep Wagon at Stadium Auto Mall at 55 Route 17 on Nov. 24. Upon picking the car up on Nov. 26, the victim discovered a backpack containing a GPS navigation unit, an iPod and multiple memory sticks, valued at a total of $900, had been stolen from the vehicle.

Bomb Threat

Lyndhurst

On Nov. 28, at approximately 5:24 a.m., police were alerted that a bomb threat had been called into the Stop and Shop on Lewandowski Street. According to police, the night manager had received the threat and police immediately evacuated the building upon arriving at the scene. The Bergen County Bomb Squad arrived, swept, and cleared the building soon after so the store was able to re-open. The origination of the threat is under investigation.

Lyndhurst

On Nov. 28, at approximately 5:30 p.m., police were called to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Riverside and Kingsland Avenues. Upon further investigation of one of the drivers, he was found to be in possession of marijuana. Police arrested 31-year-old Daniel Modarelli of Lyndhurst and charged him with possession of marijuana and driving while under the influence. He was later released on summonses.

North Arlington

On Nov. 27, at approximately 12:09 a.m., officers on patrol discovered a 2004 GMC Envoy had an expired registration. Police stopped the vehicle and spoke to the driver, 33-year-old Anthony Chisolm of Jersey City. Chisolm did not provide a driver’s license and provided a fictitious date of birth and address. Officers discovered Chisolm had a $2,000 traffic warrant out of Woodbridge, a $667 traffic warrant out of Bayonne and a $750 traffic warrant out of Mount Olive. He was placed under arrest. A routine search found marijuana and rolling papers. He was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and with hindering his own apprehension. Bail was set at $2,000 with a 10 percent option. After processing, he was released after providing full cash bail.

On Nov. 27, at approximately 11:02 p.m., officers on patrol observed a green sport utility vehicle travelling 50 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone on Schuyler Avenue at Vanderbilt Place. Police stopped the driver, 21-year-old Jason O’Rourke of North Arlington, and observed him reaching into his backpack. Police also noticed the odor of unburned marijuana in the vehicle. A search found six blue Baggies containing marijuana and rolling papers on the passenger’s side. O’Rourke was arrested for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Bail was set at $5,000 with a 10 percent option. He was released after posting $500 cash bail.

Lyndhurst

On Nov. 24, at approximately 8:49 p.m., a complainant parked in the driveway of a residence on the 200-block of Copeland Avenue reported the rear window shattered on a 2003 GMC.

DWI

Lyndhurst

On Nov. 26, at approximately 3:51 p.m., a resident near the corner of Roosevelt and Riverside Avenue reported to police that a vehicle had went off the roadway, struck a traffic post, spun around and fled. Based on the description of the vehicle, police were able to identify it near the corner of Kingsland and Stuyvesant Avenue. It had noticeably suffered front-end damage. Police subsequently arrested the driver, 51-year-old Baha Saman of North Arlington. He was charged with DWI, refusal to submit to a breath test and leaving the scene of an accident.

On Nov. 24, at approximately 9:55 p.m., police were called to a dispute between two motorists neat the corner of Page Avenue and Ridge Road. Both motorists were out of their vehicles arguing while one was accusing the other of tailgating. Upon further investigation, 54-year-old Hely Dasilvia of Harrison was found to be intoxicated. He was arrested and charged with DWI and released to a responsible party.

North Arlington

On Nov. 22, at approximately 2:23 a.m., officers on patrol observed a white Ford pickup truck riding and crossing the double-yellow line while travelling west on the Belleville Turnpike. Police stopped the driver, 40-year-old Kenichi Sugihara of Belleville, and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. After failing a field sobriety test, he was arrested for driving while intoxicated. He was processed and released to a responsible party.

On Nov. 23, at approximately 8:54 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of River Road and Hedden Terrace on a report of a motor vehicle accident. They found a vehicle against the wooden guardrail, but the driver could not be found. A witness in the area observed a man pull up in a black Honda with Maryland plates, remove the driver from the car and drive off. Police discovered the car was registered to a Kearny man and came to the residence, where the witness identified the drivers of the vehicles. Police arrested 54-year-old Wayne Todd of Catonsville, MD and 78-year-old Raymond Todd of Kearny for driving while intoxicated. They were transported to Clara Maass Hospital when police became aware of Raymond Todd’s medical problems. Blood tests revealed both drivers to be under the influence of alcohol. Both were charged with careless driving. Raymond Todd was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, obstruction and hindering his own apprehension. Wayne Todd was charged with obstruction and hindering the apprehension of another. Both vehicles were impounded and both individuals were released to family members from the hospital on summonses.

Fire

Lyndhurst

On Nov. 17, at approximately 8:33 p.m., police and fire responded to an apartment fire at 544 Valley Brook Avenue. Upon arrival, police found smoke billowing from the top floor and were able to contain a fire that had originated in the attic. In all, six residents were evacuated from the building, while one family was displaced and assisted by the Red Cross with a room at the Quality Inn. There were no reported injuries except for one officer that received a minor dog bite during the investigation.

Warrants

North Arlington

On Nov. 28, at approximately 3:33 p.m., police received a report of a shoplifting from CVS at 579 Ridge Road. CVS reported a black male wearing a green jacket and blue jeans filled a bag with merchandise and ran out of the store. Police searched for the individual and located two males, one fitting the description of the shoplifter. Police determined the individual did not commit the shoplifting. However, the men gave conflicting information. A warrant check revealed the two men, 29-year-old Damien Hawkins and 25-year-old Daniel Hawkins, both of Irvington, had outstanding warrants. Damien Hawkins had an active traffic warrant for $750 out of Rutherford. Daniel Hawkins had a $789 traffic warrant out of Roseland. Damien Hawkins was taken to Rutherford police and Daniel Hawkins was taken to Roseland police.
