Assault

East Rutherford

On Oct. 16, at approximately 5:33 p.m., a complainant at Salsarita’s Fresh Cantina, located on Route 17 North, reported that he had been assaulted by one of his employees. The complainant had told police that the previous night, he had repeatedly asked Steven Brooks to get off his cell phone during work. The next morning, the complainant said Brooks came in, pushed him over a desk and began to wrestle with him before fleeing the scene. Two witnesses told police the same occurred. Brooks could not be found, but the complainant told police he was on parole. The complainant was left with a scratch on his right arm and on the right side of his neck.

Burglary/Theft

East Rutherford

On Oct. 17, at approximately 9:32 p.m., a complainant at 159 Park Ave. reported that a package had been delivered while she was not home and was left outside her apartment door. Upon arrival home, the complainant found the package in the common hallway ripped open. Taken from inside were two hand towels and a set of five bowls. 

On Oct. 16, at approximately 11:43 a.m., a complainant at the Homestead Village, located at 300 Route 3 East, reported that the chain machine in the hotel had been broken and the contents were removed.

Rutherford

On Oct. 18, at approximately 4 p.m., a resident of Sylvan Street reported someone stole a four-foot Frankenstein decoration valued at $50 from off his front lawn. 

On Oct. 17, at approximately 6:30 p.m., a complainant reported a Sirius radio antenna was stolen off his vehicle while it was parked near the intersection of Montross and Vreeland avenues. 

On Oct. 17, at approximately 3 p.m., police received reports a suspicious person pushing a shopping cart along Irving Place. Officers responded and saw that the cart was from the Lowe’s in East Rutherford. Police issued a summons to the man, 22-year-old Emmanuel Reyes-Castillo of Passaic, for theft of movable property. 

On Oct. 17, at approximately 9:30 a.m., a woman was arrested at Rite-Aid for shoplifting. A manager had seen the woman, 33-year-old Aida Silva of Newark, place several packages of socks and panty-hoes in basket and then cover it with a coat. The total value of the items came to about $42. She was issued a borough summons for shoplifting and released. 

On Oct. 16, at approximately 4:30 p.m., a man went into Corbo Jewelers on Park Avenue and asked to look at a ring. The woman working at the counter showed him the ring and he then left. Later that day the man returned and asked to see the ring again. As the woman left the room for a moment to go to the vault, the man attempted to grab a wallet and a cell phone on the counter that belonged to the manager. The manager saw the man do it and hit him in the chest. The man dropped the items and ran out the door, smashing the door’s glass pane on the way out. He got into a maroon Mercedes Benz with temporary stickers and fled east on Glen Road. Police received reports that a similar incident occurred in Clifton the next day. 

On Oct. 16, at approximately 5:15 p.m., police received reports of two attempted burglaries and one successful burglary at an apartment house at the corner of Hackett Place and Union Avenue. Someone entered an apartment using a bar to pry open the door and stole a bracelet and an iPod. The other two apartments showed signs of attempts to pry open their doors.

On Oct. 16, at approximately 2 p.m., police received a report of an attempted burglary at a house on Union Avenue. The complainant reported a black male got into the enclosed porch in front of his home and attempted to pry open a door. The complainant saw the man through the window and the man ran off and got into a white Nissan Murano driven by a black female. 

Criminal Mischief

East Rutherford

On Oct. 17, at approximately 8:11 a.m., a complainant at 60 High St. reported that an egg had been thrown at the residence.

DWI

North Arlington

On Oct. 14, at approximately 7:49 p.m., officers on patrol observed a vehicle cut off another vehicle, nearly striking it, and speed off before rolling through a stop sign on River Road near Hendel Avenue. Police stopped the vehicle and detected an odor an alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath. Police arrested 19-year-old Matt Kercheval of Bloomfield for driving while intoxicated and consuming alcohol underage. Police determined the passenger, 19-year-old Hye-Chun Gehring of Nutley, had also consumed alcohol and placed him under arrest for underage consumption of alcohol. While searching Gehring, police found him to be in possession of suspected marijuana. Kercheval was released to a responsibly part and Gehring was released on summons. 

On Oct. 18, at approximately 1:56 a.m., police on patrol observed a silver sedan quickly accelerate from the area in front of Molly’s Bar on Ridge Road. Upon speaking to the driver, 21-year-old Mario Cerqueira, police detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage. After failing a field sobriety test, police placed him under arrest for driving while intoxicated. His 1997 Audi was impounded. He was processed and released to a responsible party. 

On Oct. 19, at approximately 1:36 a.m., officers on patrol observed a small, black sport utility vehicle speeding on Ridge Road off of Crystal Street. Police stopped the vehicle and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage. After failing a filed sobriety test, police arrested 38-year-old Ana Martins of Lyndhurst for driving while intoxicated. She was released to a responsible party.

Rutherford

On Oct. 17, at approximately 7 p.m., officers stopped a vehicle at the corner of Chestnut and Franklin after receiving a report of someone driving carelessly. Officers spoke with the driver, 55-year-old Katherin Bent of Rutherford, who complained of chest pains and said she had a heart problem. Officers also detected the smell of alcohol on her breath. Bent was charged with DWI and taken to St. Mary’s Hospital. 

On Oct. 13, at approximately 7:30 p.m., police stopped a vehicle on Route 3 East for careless driving. An officer spoke with the driver, 28-year-old Saren Leang of Newark, and detected an odor of alcohol on her breath. Leang failed a field sobriety test and was charged with careless driving, driving without a license and DWI.

Warrants

East Rutherford

On Oct. 18, at approximately 7:29 a.m., police responded to 44 Herman Street to pick up Latora Alston on an outstanding Paramus warrant for $715. They were there to also charge her with providing false information to police stemming from a motor vehicle stop on Sept. 6 where she was charged, but used her sister’s name as hers. Her sister showed up on Oct. 17 to court, but made police aware that the person actually stopped on Sept. 6 was Alston.
