Assault
North Arlington
On Sept. 22, at approximately 2:41 a.m., police responded to a report of a fight near Elm Street and the Belleville Turnpike. Nineteen-year-old Perry Martinez of Wood-Ridge was arrested for assault after allegedly running over a victim’s foot in a motor vehicle.
Burglary/Theft
East Rutherford
On Sept. 29, at approximately 3:38 p.m. a complainant from Illinois reported that while his vehicle was parked at Homestead Village, located at 300 Route 3 East, an unknown party damaged the passenger’s side door lock and stole a GPS unit valued at approximately $500.
On Sept. 29, at approximately 9:15 a.m. an employee at BJ’s Wholesale Club, located on Route 17 North, stated that she observed 38-year-old Sonia Dilone of Brentwood leave the store with a 1.75 liter bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label valued at $55.99. She also was seen leaving with a one-liter bottle of Johnnie Walker Black valued at $37.09, without paying for the merchandise. Dilone later admitted the theft to police.
On Sept. 25, at approximately 9:42 a.m. a complainant from New York stated that sometime before 6 p.m. the previous evening, an unknown party gained entry into his vehicle by smashing the passenger’s side front window. The vehicle had been parked at the time in the Fairfield Inn parking lot, located at 850 Route 120 South. The victim reported that a Magellan GPS system had been stolen.
On Sept. 24, at approximately 8:42 a.m., a complainant from Newark stated that sometime overnight, an unknown party had broken into his vehicle by breaking in the passenger’s side window and had stolen a TomTom GPS system valued at $400.
On Sept. 24, at approximately 8:59 a.m. a complainant of Guttenberg stated that his vehicle had had its passenger’s side window broken in. There were no items reported stolen from the vehicle.
Lyndhurst
On Sept. 25, at approximately 7:31 a.m., a complainant at 325 Valley Brook Ave. reported the theft of several items from her 1993 Honda. Upon arrival, the complainant reported that a Pioneer TV/radio had been stolen from inside the car. A carbon fiber rear hatch spoiler and front bumper spoiler were also stolen from the car’s exterior. The items were collaboratively valued at $1,000. Police noticed that entry was gained by taking the car’s window off its tracks. A hand print and fingerprints were detected on the car and the Bergen County Criminal Investigation squad responded to process.
On Sept. 23, at approximately 4:09 a.m., a cab driver from New York City Taxi reported dropping three individuals off at the corner of Ridge Road and Fern Avenue. When they exited the cab, they fled on foot without paying the $56.20 fare.
Rutherford
On Sept. 25, at approximately 3 p.m., a woman reported she was the victim of a fraud. The woman had been at Corrado’s Market in Clifton where she encountered a man who said he had $75,000 to donate to a charity because he couldn’t bring the money back to his home country in Africa. He said he had the money in a bag around his waste and briefly showed her a bag that contained bills. A woman emerged from the store and began talking with the two of them. She said she could assist the man in getting a plane ride back to his country. The man told the complainant that he would give share the money with her if she would give him some of her money in good faith. The complainant then drove back to Rutherford, withdrew several thousand dollars from her checking and savings accounts, and gave the money in cash to the man. The man then gave her the bag and left. When the complainant looked inside, the bag was filled with shredded paper.
On Sept. 25, at approximately 11 a.m., a man was sitting in his house on Grove Street when he heard a noise from the back of the house. He went to the back window where he saw a young black male attempting to push the window up. The complainant yelled at him and the young man ran off. Officers determined that entry to the house had not been gained at any point.
On Sept. 24, at approximately 10:20 a.m., a woman reported that someone gained access to her checking account and deducted money to pay utility bills. Over the course of a month three withdrawals were made from her account totaling $579.
CDS
Lyndhurst
On Sept. 26, at approximately 9:58 p.m., officers responded to an activated fire alarm at 256 Ridge Road and upon entering a second floor apartment, they smelt the strong odor of burnt marijuana. Upon entering the apartment, officers observed what appeared to marijuana in a shot glass and coffee bean grinder and subsequently placed both the apartment’s occupants under arrest. Police charged 20-year-old Kathryn Pusateri and 20-year-old John Flannelly, Jr. with possession of CDS and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Sept. 26, at approximately 12:30 a.m., an officer effected a motor vehicle stop on Route 3. Upon speaking with the driver, 35-year-old Damion Joiner of Scranton, the officer detected the smell of burnt marijuana in the car and on the passengers. Police arrested Joiner and charged him with CDS possession (under 50 grams), driving under the influence of CDS and hindering an arrest because at first he gave the officer a fake name. The two passengers, 19-year-old Jason Boyd and 19-year-old Danielle Shoup, both of Scranton, were also arrested and charged with CDS possession.

Lyndhurst
On Sept. 23, at approximately 9:15 a.m., a complainant at 308 Willow Ave. reported that she had parked her 2002 Jeep across the street from her residence and upon returning, found that someone had thrown about a dozen eggs at it.
Rutherford
On Sept. 27, at approximately 11 a.m., a student at Felician College reported that sometime between Sept. 25 and the day of the report someone slashed both of his car’s driver side tires while it was parked in the school’s rear lot.
On Sept. 24, at approximately 8 a.m., a woman reported someone threw eggs at her car sometime between Sept. 22 and the morning of the report while it was parked on Mortimer Avenue in front of her home.
On Sept. 23, at approximately 8 p.m., a man on Fairview Avenue reported that sometime between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. that day two of his cars were defaced while parked in front of his house. Both cars had words scratched into their hoods.
On Sept. 23, at approximately 11:30 a.m., an officer on patrol noted two graffiti incidents on Route 3 near Ridge Road. The Department of Transportation was notified.
On Sept. 23, at approximately 12:30 a.m., a man on Vreeland Avenue reported that someone threw an object at his house and dented the siding.
DWI
Lyndhurst
On Sept. 24, at approximately 12:07 a.m., an officer on patrol on Ridge Road observed a 2003 silver Ford Expedition traveling 51 mph in a 35-mph zone while noticeably swaying back and forth. The vehicle was pulled over near the corner of Summer Avenue and Ridge Road and upon speaking with the driver, 39-year-old Rigoberto Reyes of Lyndhurst, the officer detected the strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Subsequent to a sobriety test, Reyes was arrested and charged with DWI. He was also issued a summons for careless driving.
North Arlington
On Sept. 24, at approximately 2:24 a.m., police observed a vehicle driving erratically at River Road and the Belleville Turnpike. Police stopped the driver, 32-year-old Ruth Wilcox of Maplewood, and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath. After failing a field sobriety test, she was arrested for driving while intoxicated. She was processed and released to a responsible party.
On Sept. 22, at approximately 11 p.m., police observed a vehicle driving near Elm Street and the Belleville Turnpike at a high rate of speed. Police stopped the driver, 22-year-old Daniel Marzabal of Kearny, and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. After failing a field sobriety test, he was arrested for driving while intoxicated. He was processed and released to a responsible party.
FRAUD
East Rutherford
On Sept. 26, at approximately 8:01 p.m., a loss prevention manager at BJ’s Wholesale Club, located at 300 Route 17 North, stated that Annett Otto of Montclair issued a personal check to BJ’s for the purchase of merchandise. The check was subsequently returned due to the account being closed. The complainant filed a signed, sworn affidavit against Otto.
On Sept. 26, at approximately 8:00 p.m. a loss prevention manager at BJ’s Wholesale Club stated that Bruna C. Defreitas of Newark issued a personal check to BJ’s for the purchase of merchandise. The check was subsequently returned due to the account being closed. The complainant filed a signed, sworn affidavit against Defreitas.
Rutherford
On Sept. 26, at approximately 5:30 p.m., a complainant reported several unauthorized charges were made to his Credit Union card. The man reported that on Aug. 10 he went to the Rahway Credit Union office to inquire about a car loan and two weeks later unauthorized charges began to appear on his card.
MISCELLANEOUS
East Rutherford
On Sept. 27, at approximately 10:24 a.m., the landlord of 283 Paterson Ave. stated that while he was cleaning out Apt. 5, he found a large box of ammunition in the bedroom closet of the apartment. Recovered by police were a rifle (stock), three holsters, a .22 caliber cleaning rod, one 50-count box of .45 rounds, five 50-count boxes of .303 rounds, three 50-count boxes of .308 rounds, and other ammunition held in several envelopes. The box of ammunition was placed in the police Armory and will be turned over to the Bergen County Bomb Squad.
Warrants
East Rutherford
On Sept. 28, at approximately 2:07 a.m. Clifton Police advised East Rutherford that they had 28-year-old McKinly A. Washington of Garfield in their custody, who was found to have two outstanding arrest warrants issued by East Rutherford for failing to comply with a previous sentence. Police took Washington into custody and transported him to Bergen County Jail.
On Sept. 23, at approximately 6:57 a.m. Passaic Police reported to East Rutherford that they had arrested 30-year-old Abdul Hogan of Passaic for an East Rutherford issued violation. Bail of $700 was posted. A new court date has been set for Sept. 26.
