Assault

Lyndhurst

On Aug. 26, at approximately 12:01 a.m., a 21-year-old East Brunswick resident reported exiting a shuttle bus from the Giants/Jets game on Chubb Avenue and when going to his car, was hit by a bottle in the back of the head. The suspects had fled the scene and the victim transported himself to the hospital.

Rutherford

On Aug. 25, at approximately 2 a.m., police received a call reporting two suspicious persons, one male and one female, walking along the side of Route 3 West. Officers spoke to the two and discovered that one of them was 21-year-old Steven Dembeck, a fugitive out of Colorado. During the course of the check, Dembeck punched one police officer in the face and kicked another before making a run for it. Police caught up with him and charged him with two counts of aggravated assault. Neither officer was injured.

Burglary/Theft

Lyndhurst

On Aug. 28, at approximately 1:36 p.m., an Edison resident reported that he had parked his car on the 200-block of Stuyvesant Avenue and shortly upon returning, discovered his laptop computer and computer equipment had been stolen off the front seat. In total the computer and equipment was valued at $4,700.

 

On Aug. 26, at approximately 10:36 a.m., the owner of Mazur’s Bakery, located at 323 Ridge Road, reported the theft of $4,485 that had been bagged and stored in the bakery’s office the night before. Videotape showed that employees from closing the previous night had properly secured the money, but the video captured a man with a flashlight and what appeared to be an alien mask soon after come in and take it. Bakers, the only ones present during the night were questioned and told police that they had recently fired 27-year-old North Arlington resident Pietro Garcia and he may be to blame. It was soon after confirmed that the individual on the tape was not wearing a mask, but that it was Garcia’s face. He was arrested within a few hours and charged with burglary. His bail was set at $15,000 with no 10 percent option.

North Arlington

On Aug. 26, at approximately 3:14 a.m., an officer on patrol found damage to the driver’s side window of a 2000 Pontiac parked on Willis Road off of Sunset Avenue. The window was smashed out and a red brick was on the floor. A plastic cup holder and a coin holder were missing from the vehicle. Police found a man walking from the area with large bulges in both his pockets. The man, 24-year-old Jose Esteves of North Arlington, was also bleeding from a cut on his finger. Police searched Esteves and found the coin holder, the cup holder and $24 worth of change. The vehicle owner identified the items and police arrested Esteves and charged him with criminal mischief, theft and possession of burglary tools.

 

On Aug. 28, at approximately 3:15 p.m., employees of Drug Fair at 15 River Road told police they had a shoplifter in custody. The manager observed 36-year-old Maureen Salamanca take a blood pressure device off the shelf, take it out of the box and place it in her pocketbook. The manager confronted her and saw the device on her and found the empty box in an aisle. Police arrested Salamanca and found her to have an active warrant from Bloomfield for $350. She was released on their warrant and released on summons from North Arlington. The device was valued at $77.

Rutherford

On Aug. 26, at approximately 8:30 p.m., a complainant reported he was unloading his vehicle on Park Avenue when an unknown person stole a set of golf clubs valued at $2,000. The man had placed the club set next to the car and walked into a building to place something else inside. When he walked back out the clubs were gone and he saw a white sedan drive away.

Criminal Mischief

East Rutherford

On Aug. 27, at approximately 10:50 a.m., police officers responded to 129 Cornelia Street where a complainant stated that sometime after 5 p.m. the previous evening an unknown person spray painted her vehicle with the words "Wipe this off!" on the passenger’s side door.

Disorderly Conduct

Lyndhurst

On Aug. 26, while on a fire call, police observed an altercation outside 230 Lafayette Ave. Police observed 42-year-old John Dolan of Lyndhurst strike another Lyndhurst resident three times. He was subsequently arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

 

On Aug. 24, at approximately 11:26 p.m., a complainant at the Courtyard by Marriott on Polito Avenue called police to report a man acting disorderly outside the hotel. Upon arrival, police found 33-year-old Jason Bruschi of Hoboken and he appeared to be intoxicated. When police called for an ambulance, he became belligerent and was subsequently arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

 

On Aug. 24, at approximately 10:25 p.m., a complainant at Medieval Times on Polito Avenue reported a domestic dispute in the parking lot in which she tried to intervene after watching a man slap his girlfriend. While intervening, the complainant was also struck in the face. Police responded and arrested 21-year-old Dante Passerini of West Orange and charged him with disorderly conduct.

DWI

Lyndhurst

On Aug. 26, at approximately 2:11 a.m., police observed a green Mazda traveling with a taillight out and coming extremely close to the curb line. Upon stopping the vehicle, police arrested and charged 21-year-old Marlon Romero of Kearny with DWI. He was also issued summonses for failure to make repairs, inoperable lamps and having no valid insurance card in his possession.

North Arlington

On Aug. 25, at approximately 2:15 a.m., officers on patrol observed a 2003 Honda traveling westbound on the Belleville Turnpike with tinted windows and a broken taillight. Police stopped the vehicle and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath. After failing a field sobriety test, police arrested 25-year-old Louis Sykes of Belleville. His vehicle was impounded and he was issued summonses for having a broken taillight and tinted windows and driving while intoxicated. He was later released to a responsible party.
