Foor and more rock the local scene

(by Corey Klein - August 22, 2007)

The band is called Foor, as in four people in the band. But do not be surprised to see a rotating cast of musicians take the stage after the house band’s first set on a Friday night at the Park Tavern in East Rutherford.

Part of Foor’s uniqueness is its changing faces. A Foor show typically begins with lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Joe Vernazza, back-up vocalist and guitarist "Texx," world-renowned bassist Nick Di Geronimo and drummer Paul Meehan.

Later, new faces and instruments are added and switched around. Singer Alice White lends her voice. Guitarist George Spratt picks up a guitar. Drummer Kevin Smith might take over the drums or add congas to the mix. An electric fiddle or keyboards might hop in.

All the members of Foor, auxiliary or not, pride themselves with the loose organization and open door policy of the group. "The only thing we ask is that you know what you’re doing," said Spratt.

The band members hail from Rutherford, East Rutherford and Carlstadt and many have deep roots in the area. Spratt recalls spotting Smith in front of St. Mary’s School holding a Jimi Hendrix album and singing its praises when they were school-age acquaintances.

The members of Foor also have ties to musicians far beyond Rutherford. Di Geronimo, a Julliard-schooled bass player, has showcased his musicianship across Europe. Smith and his wife are personal friends with Neil Young. The drummer/percussionist has also had phone conversations with Hendrix himself. Hendrix dedicated two sets to an earlier incarnation of Foor. Guitarist "Texx" is involved with at least two other bands: an original band from Brooklyn called Mystical Children and a Clifton-based cover band called Brookwood. White moved to Rutherford several weeks ago from Illinois specifically to join Foor, after an invitation from Smith.

As the chief songwriter, Vernazza has a bottomless repertoire of original songs. At the Park Tavern, the band mostly plays their more upbeat originals, saving cover songs for the last set. "It seems everywhere you go bands are playing cover songs. We are lucky that we can play our music and it’s accepted," said Vernazza. "As a general rule, we play about two to three slow songs a night."

Vernazza and the rest of the group hesitate to name artists with a similar style to theirs or a genre that defines their sound. The Beatles, R&B, blues and jazz influence Vernazza’s songwriting, he said. Foor’s music might remind listeners of Van Morrison, Lynard Skynard or The Band, but it truly depends on the song, as the band has enough versatility to keep listeners guessing. Texx said the band’s music ranges from George Gershwin to psychedelic.

When Foor does cover songs, they make sure to put their own spin on it, Vernazza explains. As the Park Tavern crowd gets increasingly familiar with Foor’s original material, the requests for originals keep coming.

While they are regulars at the Park Tavern, Foor also performs at Woody’s in Clifton, the Waterfront Café and the Cornerstone in Carlstadt on occasion, not to mention private parties.

Foor finds the Park Tavern unique because the audience cannot help but get involved with the music. The band will often hand the audience tambourines and maracas so they can join in on the fun. "There’s no place like the Park Tavern," said Vernazza. "There’s a lot of energy going on."

In short, Foor appears less like a band and more like a tight-knit gathering of friends and family members who play music on a daily basis. While the band has proper practices a few times a week, the rotating cast of characters make their way to Vernazza’s East Rutherford home every day of the week.

The band keeps things generally quiet at the Vernazza residence, and have not had any noise complaints. The volume kicks in by around the third set on Friday night when Foor, and usually five or more, bring down the house at the Park Tavern.
