Burglary/Theft

Carlstadt

On July 19, at approximately 3:51 p.m., a complainant at HC Stark reported finding a 24 inch Dell LCD monitor and Dell Precision 530 computer hard drive missing from the office. The complainant said the items may have been packed up by a moving company because the firm was moving offices.

On July 17, at approximately 10 a.m., a complainant at Textol Systems, located at 435 Meadow Lane reported the theft of a 2001 Ford van owned by the company. The van was valued at $9,000.

 

East Rutherford

On July 18, at approximately 3:38 p.m., a man stated that upon returning to his car parked on Branca Road he noticed someone had broken the driver’s side window and removed an $800 GPS system.

On July 14, at approximately 11:05 a.m., an employee at BJ’s stated that a customer saw a man and a woman take 10calling cards from a display booth while her back was turned. Neither the two suspects nor the customer who saw them were still in the store when police arrived.

On July 14, at approximately 1:02 a.m., police received a call reporting two white males looking inside of vehicles on New Street. The two then entered a vehicle and began walking along Carlton Avenue with something in their hands, according to the caller. Officers responded to the scene and saw 18-year-old Brian Sori and 20-year-old Jesse Rosenfeld both of East Rutherford enter a vehicle on Grant Street. The two were arrested and Rosenfeld was found to be in possession of a checkbook belonging to someone else. The two were issued summons for burglary.

On July 13, at approximately 8:10 p.m., officers responded to BJ’s where a loss prevention manager was detaining 37-year-old Brenda Cruz-Almonte of Yonkers for the theft of several items. According to the manager, Cruz-Almonte attempted to fraudulently return several items that she had just taken from the sales floor using a receipt for a previous purchase. Cruz-Almonte was arrested and issued a summons for theft by deception.

Lyndhurst

On July 19, at approximately 3:20 p.m., a complainant called to report the theft of a blue and white 2005 BMX-style bicycle from the Burger King, located at 1 Park Ave.

On July 17, a complainant from a landscaping company doing work at 1090 Wall St. West reported the theft of two backpack leaf blowers from the rear of the company’s 1998 International truck. The blowers, unknown in value, were RedMax models.

North Arlington

On July 15, at approximately 1:53 p.m., a complainant on Devon Street of off Exton Avenue reported a forced entry burglary to her home. The complainant told police that she had found a side door pried open on the side of her home and once inside found that someone had entered several rooms, rummaging for goods. In all, approximately $2,000 of jewelry was reported missing. Police are still investigating the crime.

Rutherford

On July 18, at approximately 12 p.m., the owner of the closed gas station at Chestnut Street and Union Avenue reported unknown persons had gained entry to the main building by pushing in a pane of glass. The owner could not determine if anything was taken.

On July 19, at approximately 12 p.m., a woman at 301 Route 17 North reported she left the door unlocked on her 2006 Lincoln and unknown persons entered the vehicle and stole a black CD case containing CDs, as well as the vehicle’s registration and insurance information.

Criminal Mischief

North Arlington

On July 15, at approximately 11:30 a.m., police discovered the last of five cars that had been scratched with a sharp object from the time of 10:30 p.m. the previous night to the morning in the area of 5th Street and Union Avenue. The vandalism included a 2004 Ford Taurus that sustained scratches to the driver’s side door and fender, a 2006 Ford Van scratched in its driver’s side, a 2000 Ford Mustang with damage to the driver’s side and hood and a 2004 Toyota Camry that had also sustained scratched to the driver’s side.

On July 18, a resident on Canterbury Avenue reported that someone had scratched the trunk of a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta parked in the driveway.

Rutherford

On July 14, at approximately 6:45 a.m., police observed three incidents of graffiti on businesses at Park Avenue and East Park Place. Unknown parties spray-painted "NCK" or "WCK" in black on the walls of a gas station, doctor’s office and the Masonic temple there.

On July 15, at approximately 8 a.m., a complainant reported unknown persons threw a Bacardi rum bottle through the window of a 1988 Jeep parked on Riverside Avenue.

CDS

East Rutherford

On July 18, at approximately 2:27 p.m., an officer observed a car driving along Hackensack Street. A check of the vehicle’s registration revealed there to be an active warrant out for the vehicle’s owner. The officer stopped the car and spoke with the driver, 38-year-old Odner Souveus of Irvington, and the passenger, 21-year-old Sean Pierre of Union. While speaking with the driver, officers observed an open bottle of liquor on the floor and a bag of what appeared to be marijuana on top of the center console. Both stated the marijuana wasn’t theirs. Though neither was the owner of the vehicle, a computer check revealed both of their licenses were suspended. Souveus and Pierre were arrested and charged with CDS possession, driving without a license and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

DWI

Carlstadt

On July 17, an officer on patrol on Hackensack Street noticed a silver Honda Accord weaving in traffic. The officer proceeded to pull the vehicle over and upon questioning the driver, 26-year-old Marina Filshina of Wood-Ridge, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol emanating from her breath. Subsequent to a sobriety test, Filshina was arrested and charged with DWI. She was also issued a summons for failing to maintain a lane.

North Arlington

On July 14, at approximately 7:28 p.m., a complainant at the Bensi Restaurant, located at 35 River Road reported that a male had struck her vehicle with his in the parking lot and attempted to leave the scene before she confronted him. Upon arrival, police questioned 44-year-old Belleville resident Rogerio Milagres about the accident and detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Subsequent to failing a sobriety test, Milagres also refused to submit to a breath test. He was arrested and charged with DWI, refusal to submit to a breath test and careless driving.

Fraud

East Rutherford

On July 17, at approximately 11:12 a.m., the owner of Transworld on Murray Hill Parkway stated that on July 5, an employee used his company credit card to make an unauthorized purchase of a $4,900 television. On July 14, the owner received a call from the store verifying another purchase of the same item. The store gave him the cell phone number and delivery address listed for the purchase and the two matched those of an employee. The investigation was turned over to the detective bureau.

On July 14, at approximately 11:00 a.m., a woman reported an employee at the Cingular store on Route 17 South asked for her driver’s license and Visa card to confirm her identity. She has cell phone service from Cingular and was inquiring about the plan. The employee extended her two plans without her authorization and she was concerned about possible charges to her Visa card as well. She called and cancelled the card as well as the two cell phone plans. Complaints are pending.

North Arlington

On July 17, at approximately 4:39 p.m., a husband and wife on Prospect Avenue reported that they had been defrauded by an Ontario company. The couple reported that a company called Corporate Evaluation Consultants had sent them checks in the mail that totaled $980 and directions to complete mystery shopping assignments. When the assignments were complete, they were to cash the checks, keep $125 for themselves and send the balance back to Ontario. Both the husband and wife had each cashed a check and their banks later told them that they were fraudulent.

Obstructing Justice

North Arlington

On July 16, at approximately 4:15 p.m., a resident near the corner of Gold and Stover Streets reported that a suspicious looking black male wearing a baseball cap was peering into the windows of vehicles on the street. After locating and trying to question the man, later identified as 22-year-old Kevin Evans of Newark, he became reluctant to cooperate, even trying to flee the scene. Evans gave officers a fictitious name as well, that of his cousin. After properly identifying Evans through fingerprinting, he was arrested and criminally charged with obstruction of justice, hindering apprehension and implicating another individual. He was also found to have an outstanding criminal warrant out of Newark in the amount of $350. His bail was set at $2,500 with no 10 percent option and was remanded to the Bergen County Jail.

Miscellaneous

Lyndhurst

On July 19, at approximately 3:11 p.m., a North Arlington juvenile was struck by a vehicle while riding his bike through the intersection of Court and Delafield Avenues. According to police, a 70-year-old Lyndhurst resident was stopped at a stop sign and when he went to proceed, he struck the boy. The victim was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center with a leg injury. The driver was not immediately issued any summonses.

Rutherford

On July 18, at approximately 8:15 a.m., St. Mary’s School reported a 14-year-old summer school student was spotted trying to hide a three-foot-long sword. Officers contacted the student, who claimed he found the weapon in the bushes. The sword was confiscated and the juvenile was released to his parents. Complaints are pending.

On July 19, at approximately 7 p.m., a woman on Maple Street reported a young man in her backyard peering through her window. Based on her description, officers located the suspect on Elm Street. He was charged with invasion of privacy, a juvenile complaint was signed and he was released to his parents.

Property Damage

Carlstadt

On July 18, at approximately 12 p.m., the owner of the building at 440 Hackensack St. appeared at headquarters to report damage to the property. The complainant said he had gotten a notice in the mail from the town to repair a chain link fence that separates his property from Maggie’s Bar, but said the damage has been caused by patrons parking their cars in the lot. He also pointed out that there has been damage to a wall and that cooking oil from the restaurant has leaked onto the wall.

Threats

East Rutherford

On July 15, at approximately 3:04 p.m., a woman reported she received an e-mail the night before that made her concerned for her safety. The message was sent by garciavinny@info.com and stated that a price had been put on the woman’s head for $10,000 and that he had been hired to kill her. The sender told her not to contact the police and that arrangements would be made for her to transfer the money. Officers contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Officer’s Computer Crimes Division. The division informed them that it is most likely a scam and that many Bergen County residents have received similar e-mails.

Warrants

Carlstadt

On July 16, at approximately 2:25 p.m., an officer on patrol on Route 120 observed a Chevy Tracker with no front license plate and when a check of the back plate was input, a hit came back as not on file with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Upon stopping the vehicle, it was determined that the driver, 28-year-old Moises Loayza of Bayonne had a suspended driver’s license and a warrant out of Bayonne for $200. He was issued summonses for driving while suspended, no insurance, driving an unregistered vehicle and displaying fictitious plates. The passenger and owner of the vehicle, 35-year-old Tania Rodriguez of Perth Amboy was issued summonses for allowing another driver to operate and unregistered vehicle, allowing another driver to operate an uninsured vehicle, displaying fictitious plates and failure to inspect.

Weapons Possession

North Arlington

On July 16, at approximately 5:05 p.m., a complainant on Forest Street, directly off the Belleville Turnpike, reported seeing three males in the backyard of a Forest Street residence and one was waiving a handgun in the air. Upon arrival, police observed 24-year-old North Arlington resident Wellington Brito place a silver handgun on a table in the backyard. The gun was later identified as a Crossman 1088 pellet gun, but Brito had no firearm permit for the weapon, which is a law in New Jersey. He was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and bail was set at $1,000 with a 10 percent option. Brito posted $100 and was released.
