Budget finalization delayed
(by Daniel O'Keefe - July 18, 2007)
The East Rutherford Mayor and Council put off finalization of its budget until next month. The budget will be approved either at the regular August meeting or at a special meeting yet to be scheduled, according to Mayor James Cassella. The proposed budget promises an $18,000 decrease in the local tax levy from $5,189,817 last year to $5,171,701 this year. The average homeowner with a house assessed at $150,000 would pay $870 in municipal taxes with this year’s budget, four percent less than last year’s $907.50.
According to Thom Ammirato, a spokesman for the borough, the budget was delayed because the Division of Local Government Services requested further documentation on several revenue items and didn’t have time to review them before this month’s council meeting. "We don’t expect anything will change," said Ammirato.
