Arson
Rutherford
On Aug. 19, at approximately 12:59 a.m., a resident on East Van Ness Avenue reported that two curbside garbage cans were on fire. Police were able to contain the flames until the Rutherford Fire Department arrived to extinguish them. The complainant told police that an unknown actor had rung the doorbell and fled two minutes before the fires were discovered. Then, at approximately 1:15 a.m., police received report of a second garbage can fire at nearby Tamblyn Field. This garbage can had apparently been moved to the field’s northwest basketball court from another location.
Burglary/theft
Carlstadt
On Aug. 20, at approximately 1:52 p.m., a complainant at Location Logistics on Washington Avenue reported that on the previous day her husband had filled both of the tanks of their truck with diesel fuel. The next day they found that someone had siphoned $482.50 worth of fuel out of the two tanks sometime overnight while the truck was parked on the east side of the building.
On Aug. 18, at approximately 10:36 p.m., a woman reported she removed her camera from her purse while she was at Charlie Brown’s steakhouse on Paterson Plank Road. She left the restaurant with her purse but without her camera, and when she returned to retrieve it the camera was missing.
On Aug. 15, at approximately 1:10 p.m., two juveniles at the Burger King on Paterson Avenue reported their bikes were stolen while they were inside. Surveillance footage from the parking lot failed to show the bikes being stolen.
On Aug. 14, at approximately 5:58 p.m., a woman reported a pair of Prada sunglasses valued at $331.70 were stolen from her 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse which was parked outside her house on Central Avenue with the convertible top and the windows rolled down. The theft took place on the afternoon of July 5.
East Rutherford
On Aug. 20, at approximately 8:41 a.m., a complainant reported a theft of 50 gallons of diesel fuel from a vehicle parked at Fournier Trucking at 450 Murray Hill Pkwy.
On Aug. 18, at approximately 12:52 p.m., a complainant reported a stolen 2003 white Ford from Sonitrol at 20 Murray Hill Pkwy. The keys were located in the gas tank door.
On Aug. 18, at approximately 5:54 a.m., a complainant reported someone took gas from trucks parked at Garden State Specialties on Grove Street at Herman Street. Between Aug. 15 at 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 18 at 5 a.m., approximately a quarter of a tank of diesel gas was siphoned from a truck. Also stolen were two cases of Coca-Cola and a case of Diet Coke. The back door of the truck had been left unlocked.
On Aug. 17, at approximately 5:28, a complainant reported leaving his wallet in his black 2008 Mazda with the windows open while parked on Paterson Plank Road and Clinton Place. The victim walked across the street and discovered the wallet was missing upon returning. The wallet contained $10 cash, a driver’s license, a social security card, a health care card, a chase credit card and a bus pass.
On Aug. 16, at approximately 11:53 p.m., police responded to Landmark II at 26 Route 17 South on a report of a stolen vehicle. The complainant reported parking a red 2000 Honda Civic in the lot at 5:40 p.m. Upon returning, the victim discovered it had been stolen.
On Aug. 15, at approximately 1:57 p.m., police responded to an apartment on Orchard Street near Hackensack Street on a report of a burglary. The resident left the apartment at 7:30 a.m. and was notified by the vice president of the condominium complex of a hole in the door. The hole was four inches in diameter directly left of the deadbolt lock and door knob. The vice president entered the apartment and discovered a safe was missing. The safe contained approximately $50,000 worth of jewelry, including a Audemars Piquet Royal Oak watch valued at $7,500, a belt buckle with a diamond "A" valued at $2,000 and approximately 10 to 15 pairs of diamond cufflinks, including one with a gold coin, two with onyx and one with opal.

On Aug. 23, at approximately 2:44 p.m., a complainant reported the theft of her purse while shopping at ShopRite, located at 540 New York Ave. The complainant was first notified of the theft after ShopRite personnel alerted her that someone had tried to use her Master Card to make a purchase.
On Aug. 22, at approximately 2:39 p.m., a complainant reported the theft of a cell phone and GPS unit from a 2006 Ford pickup while it was parked on the 300-block of Wilson Ave. Entry to the vehicle was gained by smashing the front driver’s side window.
On Aug. 22, at approximately 9:45 a.m., a complainant reported the theft of an EZ Pass and cell phone charger from a 2001 Honda parked on the 200-block of Jay Avenue. There was no forced entry to the vehicle.
On Aug. 22, a complainant reported the theft of a $150 GPS unit from a 2008 Pontiac parked near the corner of Jay Avenue and Oriental Place. Entry was gained by smashing the front driver’s side window.
Rutherford
On Aug. 22, at approximately 4:01 p.m., a Yahara Avenue resident reported the theft of a $200 car stereo and black video iPod from his 1993 Honda while it was parked outside his residence. The vehicle had been unlocked and the driver’s side window open.
On Aug. 21, at approximately 6:36 p.m., a Carmita Avenue resident reported the theft of a $300 light blue GT Compe bicycle from his rear deck. The bike was stolen between 1:30 and 6:30 p.m.
On Aug. 18, at approximately 4:45 p.m., a juvenile complainant reported the theft of his black/lime green GT Compe bicycle while it was parked outside the Rutherford Public Library.
On Aug. 18, at approximately 11:56 a.m., a Feronia Way homeowner reported a break-in. An unknown actor had gained entry through the rear door of the house by breaking a nearby window and forcibly removing the door’s slide-bolt lock. The home’s bedrooms were ransacked. Reported missing were jewelry, an iPod, and a Nintendo gaming system of unknown value.

Lyndhurst
On Aug. 24, at approximately 3:12 p.m., police were alerted of an erratic driver by telephone and once located, found that the driver had struck a curb with his 2004 BMW on Delafield Avenue. Upon further investigation, the driver was found to be intoxicated and in possession of GHB. Massimo Iuele, 31, of Lyndhurst was subsequently arrested and charged with DWI and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle. He was released on $5,000 bail.
On Aug. 24, at approximately 2:26 a.m., police investigated two individuals sitting in a motor vehicle near New York Avenue. Once approached, one of the occupants, 19-year-old Nicole Limatola of Carlstadt was found to be in possession of marijuana and alcohol. She was subsequently charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and underage possession of alcohol.

On Aug. 18, at approximately 5:47 a.m., officers responded to the scene of an accident at Orient Way an E. Pierrepont Ave, where a 2007 Honda driven by 24-year-old Michelle Tumminelli of Rutherford had struck two parked cars. Upon interacting with Tumminelli, officers believed her to be under the influence, and later located four white pills and a wax fold containing a brown powder believed to be heroin. Tumminelli was arrested and transported to a hospital for treatment. She was later charged with careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, DWI, CDS possession and illegal possession of prescription drugs. She was released on summons.

East Rutherford
On Aug. 17, at approximately 2:27 p.m., a complainant on Clinton Place reported unknown actors broke the rear window of a gray 1993 Lexus. Nothing was reported missing from the vehicle.
Rutherford
On August 19, at approximately 5:05 p.m., police responded to an alarm at the Pierrepont School. A canvass of the building revealed a broken window on the south side of the building’s gymnasium. Two tennis balls were discovered lodged in the window, indicating that the act was probably purposeful.
DWI
East Rutherford
On Aug. 16, at approximately 3:32 a.m., police observed a black 2003 Audi A4 travelling on Route 3 West at Route 120 North at 84 miles per hour. The vehicle made three right-lane changes without signaling onto Route 17 northbound. Police stopped the driver, 42-year-old Antoine Mourad of Hackensack, and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage. After further investigation, police arrested Mourad for driving while intoxicated. He was also charged with speeding, making an unsafe lane change and careless driving.
Lyndhurst
On Aug. 23, at approximately 11:46 p.m., police effected a motor vehicle stop near the corner of Lewandowski Street and Ten Eyck Avenue. Upon further investigation, it was determined the driver, 35-year-old Maria Carvalheira of Kearny was intoxicated. She was subsequently charged with DWI, careless driving, failure to keep right and failure to notify of an address change.
On Aug. 23, at approximately 12:45 a.m., police arrested 60-year-old Richard Duffy, Jr. of Belleville and charged him with DWI and careless driving after pulling him over near the corner of Kingsland Avenue and Ridge Road.
Fraud
Rutherford
On August 23, at approximately 3:09 p.m., police arrested 67-year-old Leslie Stewart of River Vale. Mr. Stewart was charged with two counts of forgery after investigators determined that he had illegally forwarded the mail of a Carmita Avenue resident to a P.O. Box he owned, and then opened a credit card in the victim’s name. Stewart was held on $20,000 bail.

Rutherford
On August 20, at approximately 6:20 p.m., a Montross Avenue complainant reported that she had been harassed by her neighbor, 39-year-old John Grappone. The complainant said that when her juvenile daughter fell and began crying, Grappone responded by yelling obscenities at the pair. Grappone reportedly then propped a stereo up against an open window facing the complainant’s home, and played music with explicit lyrics at a high volume. Grappone had left his home by the time police arrived, but officers noted the music and signed a complaint. Grappone was issued a summons for harassment the following day.
On Aug. 19, at approximately 8:40 p.m., police responded to a report of a suspicious person in the backyard of a Hawthorne Street resident. When the individual, described as a male in his 20s wearing a dark shirt, blue jeans and a light backpack, was confronted by the homeowner he fled onto the nearby train tracks bordering East Rutherford. ERPD and Bergen County K-9 responded and tracked a scent to Willis Street, where it was lost.
On August 19, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a Rutherford judge ordered the arrest of 19-year-old Ronald Mejia of Rutherford. Mejia had long owed $285 on a $1,010 fine, but declined to pay the balance. He was sentenced to six days in the Bergen County Jail in lieu of the fine.
