Top choice for borough administrator declines job offer

(by Daniel O'Keefe - July 16, 2008)

The council's first choice for borough administrator declined the borough's job offer, said Rutherford council president John Genovesi. After narrowing the applicants down to four and interviewing three of them, the council had determined that this candidate was its top choice. The council would not reveal the name of the applicant. Genovesi said the candidate cited the distance he would have to commute as his foremost reason for declining the position. An exact salary figure had not yet been offered to the applicant, but Genovesi said the range for the position was listed as between $83,000 and $102,000.

Genovesi made the announcement at the mayor and council’s July 15 work session and raised the issue of whether the council would prefer to choose its next favorite from among the three remaining candidates or start the application process over again. The search for a new adminstrator has been ongoing since January when former borough administrator Tim Stafford resigned to work for Donald Trump. Genovesi said he would prefer to determine the next best candidate from among the remaining three, but that he wished to wait for the council’s consensus before determining how to proceed.

In your interview process, do you ask applicants if are they willing to travel x amount of distance BEFORE taking the position? Kind of putting the horse before the cart.
