Cancer rate not abnormal in Lyndhurst

(by Michael Lamendola - July 10, 2008)

A request by the Lyndhurst Health Department to the state inquiring whether Lyndhurst has an abnormal cancer rate and/or clustering has come back and the answer is no. The request to the New Jersey Cancer Epidemiology Services (NJCES) in May was spurned by former resident Lorraine Colabella's quest to start her own registry of township cancer victims to send to the state for analysis.

The cancers that are most often related to environmental exposures, such as leukemias, lymphomas, brain and bladder cancers were not seen more frequently in Lyndhurst than would be expected," read the report.

On the request of the health department, the NJCES used some towns not near Lyndhurst as many in South Bergen are exposed to the same variables. The NJCES chose Rutherford, North Arlington, Palisades Park and Wyckoff to compare Lyndhurst to as they nearly mirror the township in population.

"We found the cancer patterns to be similar among this group of communities and to those for Bergen County and New Jersey, without any apparent geographical clustering of specific types of cancer within Lyndhurst."
