Meadowlands Commission addresses Bedroc through zoning shift
(by Michael Lamendola - July 03, 2008)
The properties surrounding the new recreation fields at the base of Valley Brook Avenue in Lyndhurst, one of which has been plagued with complaints over its use by the township and residents, may need to change their operations if a plan is passed by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission (NJMC) next week.
On July 8 the NJMC's board of commissioners will consider approving a study as to whether or not the area surrounding the new fields should have its zoning changed from its current allowed use, heavy industrial.
The study comes after a year of Lyndhurst officials pressing the state and NJMC to impede operations at Bedroc Contracting, which directly abuts the new fields. Although not zoned to do so, Bedroc has been crushing stone on its property near the fields and residents have consistently raised concerns over the health and safety issues surrounding the operations. The NJMC has fined Bedroc $4,000 for that operation and other property maintenance violations.
"By recommending to eliminate the heavy industrial zone along Orient Way in the Meadowlands District, we could significantly improve the quality of life in the neighborhood," said NJMC executive director Robert Ceberio.
If the measure is approved on July 8, the commission would open up dialogue with residents as to what they would like the area around the ball fields to look like. To get an overview of the study, the commission will meet at 10 a.m. on July 8 at NJMC headquarters, One DeKorte Park Plaza in Lyndhurst.
