Village Gourmet has yet to concede a Babe Ruth loss

Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Michael Paskas, league volunteer.

Rutherford PBA (4-2) prevailed in a slugfest against Segovia's of Wood-Ridge, 13-11.  Segovia's mounted a solid comeback attempt, but the hit parade lead by Michael Tabachuk and Danny Geraldi proved too much for the Wood-Ridge based team. Jesse Petronio pitched four innings for PBA with Bryan Gaschke earning the win with a solid 5th inning and Max Herrmann picking up the save with a 1-2-3 sixth. Van Winkle (2-3) lost a close game to Heights Fire 5-4. Francis Rossi kept up his hot hitting going 3-3 driving in two RBI. Tom McPherson had two hits driving in a run when he ripped a triple to right center. Thirteen-year-old Jake Regina started for Van Winke giving up three hits and one earned run. Francis Rossi came on in relief to pitch and striking out five batters.

Van Winkle won their second game of the year by beating the Carlstadt/East Rutherford Yankees 10-6. Francis Rossi was  2-4 driving in two runs. Tyler Allen also contributed with two singles of his own and three RBI. John Boyle is heating up with three hits of his own and stealing three bases. Martin Villa threw the heat for five innings giving up three hits, 0 runs, and striking out nine. Villa picked up his first win of the year. Village (4-0-1) has yet to be defeated. Village picked up two more wins vs. Segovia's, 15-11, and Wallington 8-6.  Down 6-3 in the 7th, Village picked up keys hits from Rex MacMillian, Bryan Kelly, and the tying single from Rob Buell to make it 6-6, though the game ended because of the time limit. Buell picked up his first win with help from Nick Spadaro behind the plate vs. Wallington. Connor Cuccinelli, Josh Eng, Brandon Coppola, Thomas Allen, and Mike Nodjak all had hits as Joaquin Puig finished off the game in a tight situation on the mound.

In the slugfest vs. Segovia's, Eng again had a hot bat as did MacMillan and Peter Filos. Jon Legregin also picked up an RBI on a base hit. There were positive contributions in these wins from Anthony Appolito, Alex Tsiolas and Alex Sadlon. Kelly came in relief to secure the win vs. Segovia's for the undefeated Village Gourmet.

Franks (2-3) dropped a close one to Segovias 7-6. Franks younger guys started two rallies in the 4th and 7th innings. Andrew Fuime, Jason Scaringi and Nick Licata started both big innings off with hits, bringing three runs in per inning. Mike Paskas hit a base clearing double forcing Segovias to intentionally walk Chris Skowronski. Franks came up short as the game ended with the tying and winning runs on base. Chris Dunn and Rich DelOtero continued their hot hitting while defensively, James LoFaso, Shelron Martin and Pat Piszczatowski flashed the leather.

Franks beat Heights PBA  5-2, behind the pitching of Chris Skowronski. Suhash Patel reached base several times and scored twice. Chris Dunn had a big double with Rob Ferro and Ryan Tucker on base. Defensively, Darrien Pannella secured second base by making several plays on ground balls. Rutherford Elks and Village Gourmet remain atop the standings, followed by PBA and then Franks, Van Winkle and Masons.

This week’s games were umpired by Ed Halchak, Chuck Dolan and Joe Gusera. Rutherford Babe Ruth will be holding its annual "100 Inning Fund Raiser" on May 17 starting at 8 am. Please feel free to stop by to watch the kids play and make a donation.
