There are no more South Bergenite teams remaining in the Bergen County Tournament after the first weekend.
Rutherford, St. Mary’s and Becton, all lost in the first round of the county tournament.
The most devastating was that of Rutherford, who was the ninth seed, lost 3-1, at home to 24th seed Bergenfield on Saturday. The 22nd-seeded Becton team lost 5-4 at 11th-seeded Demarest while 26th-seeded St. Mary’s lost 5-0 at seventh-seeded Indian Hills.
In Rutherford, Lady Bulldogs pitcher Veronica McGorry and the squad started out slow and could not come back from the deficit in the Bergen County loss. Bergenfield scored three times in the first inning while Rutherford’s offense could not muster more than one run with its eight hits. Jackie Kressaty got the lone RBI for the Lady Bulldogs in the bottom of the fourth inning. After the first inning McGorry settled down against the Lady Bears, but Rutherford’s offense could not get the equalizers. Rutherford dropped to 12-4 on the season.
For St. Mary’s they could not figure out Indian Hills pitcher Katie Enright as the Lady Gaels only compiled three hits in the county game. Like Rutherford, St. Mary’s started out slowly as the Lady Braves scored five runs in the first inning. Lady Gaels hurler Megan Maffei settled down after the first inning, but St. Mary’s could not catch up. The Lady Gaels record dropped to 10-8.
In Demarest, Becton senior first baseman Jessica Knapp crushed a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning, but the Lady Wildcats could not get a couple of runs to pull off the upset. Like both Rutherford and St. Mary’s, Becton also started slowly as Demarest went ahead 4-0 after the first three innings. The Lady Wildcats record was 10-4 after the county loss.
Rutherford’s attempt to return to the top of the BCSL American division took a blow on April 30 and the team again was Tenafly.
The Lady Bulldogs lost the first go around at home against the Lady Tigers earlier this season and Rutherford was looking to return the favor. The Lady Bulldogs though could not get to Tenafly pitcher Jessie Shevins with only a pair of hits and Rutherford committed two errors as they fell 4-1. With the two losses the Lady Bulldogs find themselves behind Tenafly by those two games with a few weeks left in the regular season. Rutherford dropped to 11-3.
Before the Bergen County tournament, Becton’s drive for a BCSL National title took a little bit of spill on Thursday as they lost 9-2 to at home to Secaucus. Early on the Wildcats could not scored against Secaucus pitcher Michelle DiLuccio as the Patriots took a 4-0 lead. Secaucus scored five more times in the top of the seventh inning before Becton finally got on board. Becton’s record dropped to 10-3.
Before the loss to Secaucus, the Lady Wildcats won an independent contest at home to McNair. Becton pitcher Andi Nunziato helped her own cause as she collected an RBI in the 3-2 victory. Wildcats first baseman senior Jessica Knapp also had an RBI in the April 30th contest.
