Teams need .650 record by May 12 cutoff
Four South Bergenite baseball teams could make the Bergen County Tournament when the cutoff comes around next week.
Lyndhurst, Becton, St. Mary’s and Rutherford will qualify for the tourney if they have good weeks. The cutoff is May 12. Teams need to have at least a .650 winning percentage to automatically qualify. Teams can make it as a wild card if they are below .650.
Rutherford was 12-6, St. Mary’s 10-5 while both Lyndhurst and Becton were 13-3.
The Bulldogs came on near the end of the week with a pair of quality victories. Rutherford defeated rival River Dell, 5-1, as Bulldogs pitcher Mike Schneider contained the Golden Hawks offense. For the Rutherford offense, Pat Saracino had three RBI to spark the Bulldogs. Rutherford is battling the likes of River Dell, Dumont, Tenafly and Westwood for the BCSL American lead.
Lyndhurst and Becton continue to go up and down and stay at the top of the Bergen County Scholastic League National divisional race.
Lyndhurst moved closer to the top as they took a 14-4 decision at home on Thursday over Wood-Ridge. The game only went five innings as the Golden Bears scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to get to the 10-run difference. Junior pitcher Glenn Flora raised his record to 5-1 as several Golden Bears contributed to the victory. Three different Lyndhurst batters compiled two RBI in Kevin Smolensky, Evan Levario and Eddy Tuero.
The Golden Bears scored nine times in the second inning to put the game away and raise its record to 13-3.
Becton stayed in the race despite a 6-5 loss at Secaucus on Thursday. The Wildcats hopefully do not look back at this game as a blow to a league championship. Becton led 5-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Patriots scored five times in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Wildcats. Becton pitcher Matt Fleck took the loss. The Wildcats dropped to 13-3.
St. Mary’s put their name back into the National race as they defeated Wallington, 4-0, in a quality divisional race on Thursday in Rutherford. Dan O’Neill took the victory on the mound as he stymied the Panthers offense with four hits in the shutout. The Gaels raised their record to 9-5. C. J. Gonzalez had a pair of RBI for the St. Mary’s offense that plated a couple of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away.
Queen of Peace missed a couple of chances to build up their resume to make the state tournament. After making the state tournament the last two years, the Golden Griffins received a couple of blows in making it again as they lost to Dumont, 4-1, on Thursday, and 12-11 to St. Benedict on Saturday.
