Assault
North Arlington
On June 17, at approximately 2:04 a.m., officers on patrol observed a crowd fighting in the parking lot of Euro Lounge at 185 River Road. Police ordered 29-year-old Bryan Villee of Wayne to stop numerous times and pepper sprayed him when he refused. He was handcuffed and taken into custody. Another officer observed 23-year-old Joseph Laborda of Wayne fighting with a bouncer. As the officer attempted to apprehend Laborda, 26-year-old Shavaughn Palmieri, also of Wayne, stepped between the officer and Laborda. Police told her to back away, but Palmieri acted confrontational and disorderly and flailed her arms and fists toward the officer. She was also placed under arrest. Villee, Laborda and Palmieri were all charged with disorderly conduct and loitering and were released on summonses.
Burglary/Theft
East Rutherford
On June 20, at approximately 9:23 a.m., a man went to the police station to report that on the day before, he had made a withdrawal from the ATM at the Bank of New York on Garden Street in Carlstadt and accidentally left his card in the machine. The next day he contacted the bank and found out his card was used later that night at 10:38 p.m. and early the next day at 1:08 a.m. at the Exxon station on Route 17 South. Officers are obtaining security camera film for these dates and times.
On June 17, at approximately 1:39 p.m., a man stated he parked his car off of Route 3 East and when he returned his GPS system had been stolen. There were no signs of forced entry.
On June 17, at approximately 12:40 p.m., a man said he parked his car in the Sheraton Hotel parking lot the day before at 4 p.m. and when he returned the radio was gone. Someone gained entry to the truck by punching the driver’s side door lock and then removed the $650 radio from the dashboard.
On June 16, at approximately 8:11 p.m., an officer patrolling Murray Hill Parkway saw a truck in the Penn Bottle lot with its rear jacked up and on wood blocks. The rear tires and rims were missing. The police contacted Penn Bottle and an employee arrived to assess the damage. He said someone must have taken them during the previous night.
On June 16, at approximately 5:03 p.m., a woman reported someone broke into her car and stole over $700 worth in CDs.
On June 16, at approximately 6:57 p.m., a man stated that when he arrived at work at Direct Mail Specialists on Whelan Road he noticed the rear tires and rims missing from a truck parked in the loading dock. Someone removed the rims and tires and placed the rear axle on blocks. According to the complainant, it must have happened sometime between 8 p.m. the day before and 6:30 a.m. that day. The tires and rims were valued at $2,000.
On June 15, at approximately 5:44 p.m., a woman said when she returned to her car parked in the Sheraton Hotel parking lot she saw someone had smashed the driver’s side window and removed a $500 GPS system.
On June 15, at approximately 4:58 p.m., a woman parked at St. Joseph's Church on Hackensack Street reported someone smashed the passenger’s side window of her car and stole a black leather purse. The bag contained her driver's license, $300 in cash, credit cards and several bottles of prescription drugs.
Lyndhurst
On June 22, at approximately 4 a.m., police received a call to a candy shop located at 123 Valley Brook Ave. for an apparent snatch and grab burglary. Upon arrival, police found that a tire iron had been used to smash the front window of the business and the register containing $200 had been stolen. As the Bergen County Criminal Identification team was processing the scene, police received the same call to Lyndhurst Liquors, located at 298 Ridge Road. There, the register and same amount of cash had been stolen and access was gained by way of a rock through the front glass door.
On June 20, at approximately 8:22 a.m., two separate complainants called headquarters to report the thefts of their vehicles that had been parked in front of 49 Delafield Ave. One of the stolen vehicles was a 2007 Lexus while the other was a 2005 Mini Cooper.
On June 18, at approximately 8:38 a.m., a complainant from a Park Avenue business reported the theft of a $7,500 portable welder that had been attached to a utility trailer while it was parked on the 700-block of Riverside Avenue.
On June 16, at approximately 6:56 p.m., a Vermont resident reported a theft to a 2006 Ford Explorer while it was parked at the Marriott on Polito Avenue. Entry was gained through a smashed passenger’s side window and stolen from within was a Valentine radar detector valued at $400 and two pair of sunglasses valued at $100 each.
On June 16, at approximately 8:14 a.m., a resident of the 600-block of Valley Brook Avenue reported the theft of a 2007 Acura while it was parked near the corner of Castle Terrace and Valley Brook Avenue.
Rutherford
On June 20, at approximately 5 a.m., a complainant on Orient Way reported unknown persons broke into a 2000 BMW sometime during the night. The would-be burglars rummaged through the interior and the trunk, but did not take anything.
On June 20, at approximately 5:30 a.m., a man at 268 Ridge Road reported unknown persons had broken into a 2007 Nissan and a 2006 Infiniti parked in the driveway sometime during the night. The burglars escaped with a laptop computer, a Blackberry and a briefcase. The man had no total value for the stolen items.
On June 20, at approximately 6 a.m., a complainant reported unknown persons tried to pry off the headlights of a 2004 Lexus wagon parked on Mountain Way sometime during the night. The would-be headlight thieves also broke into the vehicle and rummaged through the glove compartment, though nothing was taken.
On June 20, at approximately 9 a.m., a complainant reported unknown persons stole a 2000 Audi parked on East Pierrepont Avenue. The vehicle was recovered later that day by Newark police.
On June 20, at approximately 9 a.m., a complainant reported unknown persons broke into a 2007 Lexus parked on Orient Way sometime during the night. The interior was ransacked, but nothing was missing.
On June 20, at approximately 9 a.m., a complainant reported unknown persons broke into a 2005 Lexus parked on Mountain Way sometime during the night. The vehicle was ransacked, but nothing was taken.
On June 20, at approximately 12:30 p.m., a complainant at 201 Route 17 reported unknown persons broke into a 2006 Mazda during the morning and removed a radio worth $125.
On June 21, at approximately 4 p.m., a woman stated unknown persons stole her 2003 Honda while it was parked on Wheaton Place. The vehicle contained sunglasses, change and a number of children’s toys worth $770. The woman stated she did not leave her keys in the car, but was unable to find them. The keys, but not the car, were located Friday in Union City.
North Arlington
On June 21, at approximately 12:43 a.m., a victim reported waking up from sleeping on his couch to the sound of his vehicle’s exhaust coming from outside. The victim had parked the 1992 Honda Civic outside of his home on Bergen Avenue near Ninth Street, at 8 p.m. and later the vehicle was missing. Also in the vehicle was an 80-gigabyte iPod.

On June 20, at approximately 6:14 p.m., an officer on patrol observed 43-year-old Deborah Scales in her vehicle on Devon Street off of Exton Avenue. The officer recognized Scales and knew she had outstanding warrants. Scales had a $1,000 criminal warrant out of Belleville, a $835 criminal warrant out of Harrison and a $600 traffic warrant out of North Arlington. She was placed under arrest and police found three glassine envelopes containing a white powdery substance believed to be heroin and a small plastic straw used to ingest heroin on her. She was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and drug paraphernalia.

On June 15, at approximately 7:12 a.m., a man reported that someone slashed the front driver’s side tire of his car while it was parked over night on Randolph Avenue.
Lyndhurst
On June 18, at approximately 7:59 a.m., a complainant on the 600-block of Valley Brook Avenue reported that pry marks had been left on a side door to the residence. No entry was gained to the home.
North Arlington
On June 16, at approximately 10:40 a.m., a victim reported parking a 2000 Audi on Boston Avenue at Riverview Avenue at 10 p.m. the previous night. Upon returning, the victim observed damage to the driver’s side door lock. The lock had been punched out and the windows were partially down. Nothing appeared to be stolen from the vehicle.
DWI
Lyndhurst
On June 15, police made a motor vehicle stop on the 400-block of Stuyvesant Avenue and subsequent to talking to the driver, found he was intoxicated. Police proceeded to arrest 57-year-old Gilbert Valle of Pembroke Pines, FL for DWI. He was also issued summonses for failure to exhibit an insurance card and careless driving.
North Arlington
On June 18, at approximately 12:49 a.m., officer on patrol observed a vehicle stopped at the intersection of River Road and Hendel Avenue. The driver, 51-year-old Rosa Rodriguez of Belleville, was trying to start the vehicle. The front passenger’s side of the vehicle was damaged and the front passenger’s side rim was bent and missing a tire. Police also observed scratches down the passenger side of the vehicle, smoke leaving the vehicle and fluids on the roadway. Rodriguez exited the vehicle, unsteady on her feet, and failed a field sobriety test. She was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. Her vehicle was impounded and she was released to a responsible party.

On June 16, at approximately 5:02 p.m. a man reported the identity theft of his name and social security number. The man received a call from a utilities company in California asking for more information before he could get utilities service. He informed them that he lives in New Jersey and that it couldn't be him. When they said they had his name and recited his social security number he panicked and hung up the phone before he could get the company's name.
Lyndhurst
On June 21, at approximately 4:56 p.m., a complainant from the 100-block of Page Avenue reported that someone had been using his debit card number to make two unauthorized purchases in the amount of $900.60. Police are currently checking records of where the purchases were made to assist their investigation.
On June 21, police were alerted to a potential fraud by a resident of the 300-block of Ridge Road. The resident got a response of a potential buyer to some things he was selling on the Internet. The resident then received a check for $2,500 for the merchandise although all totaled, the goods were only selling for about $300. The perspective buyer asked the resident to cash the check, leave $100 for himself over the merchandises’ price and send the balance back. The resident became suspicious and never cashed the check. Police say this is becoming a common fraud tactic to giving away bank account information and identity.

Carlstadt
On June 21, at approximately 9:45 p.m., a 6-year-old boy was struck by a hit-and-run driver as he was crossing an intersection after getting off a bus near the corner of 20th Street and Paterson Plank Road. Police are looking for a Mercedes-Benz E-Series in light tan or brown in color, manufactured between the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. The boy, from Sacramento, CA, was visiting the area with his family during the incident. He received a concussion and broken pelvis in the ordeal, but was listed in stable condition. Police are seeking anyone with information pertaining to the crime and can call the detective bureau at 201-438-4810.
Rutherford
On June 19, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Rutherford police received a call from a man who said his 1999 BMW had been stolen from Park Avenue while he was at the Subway restaurant. At nearly the same time, police received reports of a motor vehicle accident at Highland Cross and Orient Way. While officers were taking a report from the man, police recovered his vehicle behind a doctor’s office on Sylvan Way. Officers determined the man, 18-year-old Jersey City resident Hassan Syed, had been involved in the collision and had tried to conceal it by reporting the car stolen. Syed was issued summonses for running a stop sign, driving with a suspended license, leaving an accident scene and filing a false police report.
