Burglary/theft
East Rutherford
On April 23, at approximately 10:01 a.m., a Sparta man reported the theft of his 1996 White Ford Van to an officer while the latter was on patrol in the parking lot of BJ’s Wholesale Club on Route 17 North. The van contained approximately $1,700 worth of snacks.
North Arlington
On April 19, at approximately 10:43 a.m., a victim reported someone stole her purse from a flee market in the parking lot of Queen of Peace Church at Ridge Road and Franklin Avenue. The victim reported leaving a brown Coach purse on a table. When she looked back, the purse was missing. Thirty dollars cash, a blue wallet valued at $100 and a Verizon EnV cell phone valued at $150 were inside the purse.

On April 26, at approximately 7:05 p.m., a woman on Washington Avenue reported her son’s $560 BMX bike was stolen. He had left the bike at a friend’s house on Home Avenue on April 23 and when he returned to retrieve the bike, it was missing.
On April 26, at approximately 4:37 p.m., a complainant at Felician College reported someone stole the cash register from the on-campus Falcon’s Nest convenience store. The register contained $100. There were no signs of forced entry.
On April 26, at approximately 9:27 a.m., a complainant reported someone broke into his 2004 Cadillac sometime between 1:30 and 9:20 a.m. that day and stole a combined stereo-navigation system, an amplifier and an iPod. The driver’s side door lock was punched out and there was extensive damage to the dashboard.
On April 23, at approximately 1:49 p.m., a complainant reported someone broke into his 2002 Dodge pickup truck. The complainant reported the car was locked, but police found no sign of forced entry. A digital camera battery was reported stolen.
On April 22, at approximately 4:37 p.m., a complainant reported he never received the Yankees season tickets he ordered. The tickets were valued at $720. UPS records show that someone else signed for the tickets on March 20 at 9 a.m.
On April 21, at approximately 5:52 p.m., a complainant reported someone stole his lawnmower from off the front lawn of his Raymond Avenue home sometime between 5:25 and 5:35 p.m. that day. A neighbor reported seeing a white male in a black pickup truck with a lawnmower in the back leaving the scene at about that time.
On April 20, at approximately 7:59 a.m., witnesses reported seeing someone attempt to break into a 2008 Dodge pickup truck in the parking lot of the Extended Stay Motel. Witnesses saw a Hispanic male in his mid-twenties with his hair braided in rows walking around the lot looking into vehicles and attempting to break into the car in question. The suspect walked away from the vehicle and got into a blue Dodge Caravan. Witnesses reported the vehicle had a New York registration. However, when police ran the number for New Jersey, it corresponded to a stolen vehicle that was subsequently recovered in Newark. Rutherford police reported to the Renaissance Hotel several hours later and found a 2006 Cadillac with its windows shattered but evidently nothing stolen.

On April 20, at approximately 12:21 p.m. the fire chief reported that the center Plexiglass window of the overhead garage door on the Washington Avenue Firehouse, located at 480 Washington Ave., had been busted. Nothing from inside the firehouse had appeared to be missing.
Rutherford
On April 22, at approximately 9:55 p.m., a complainant reported someone fired a white paintball at the front door of his Fairview Avenue home. No other damage was caused and police didn’t find anyone in the area.

North Arlington
On April 19, at approximately 1:36 a.m., officers on patrol witnessed a shouting match outside of Molly’s Bar and Grill at 26 Ridge Road. Police directed the crowd to leave the area and observed a man, 22-year-old Victor Muniz of Kearny, yelling and cursing. Muniz kicked a sign and a parking meter and attempted to walk past police and enter the bar. He was placed under arrest for disorderly conduct. During processing, police found he had an outstanding criminal warrant out of Harrison for $157. He was released on summons after posting cash bail on the warrant.
On April 19, at approximately 7:33 p.m., officers were dispatched to Dunkin’ Donuts at 206 Ridge Road on a report of a suspicious person who reportedly attempted to grab a water bottle from a juvenile. Police approached the man, 48-year-old Michael Goffredo of Kearny, and said he appeared to be intoxicated or emotionally disturbed and was evasive and rambling. During interviewing, Goffredo broke away from police and began to run, flailing his harms and screaming at officers. Police restrained Goffredo, arrested him and took him to the hospital for evaluation. He was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest and was turned over to the hospital.

On April 24, at approximately 4:57 a.m., police responded to a motor vehicle accident on Route 3 West. There they found 29-year-old Nicholas Andreottola of Belleville, who had sustained injuries to his face when his Jeep rear-ended a tractor-trailer. On interacting with Andreottola, police detected the odor of alcohol, slurred speech, and difficulty standing. They performed several field sobriety tests, all of which indicated intoxication. Andreottola was arrested, treated for his injuries, and blood samples were taken for blood-alcohol concentration tests.
On April 22, at approximately, 8:53 p.m., police stopped 57-year-old Robert Malippa for running a stop sign at Central Avenue. On approaching Malippa’s car, police noticed an opened beer can in the rear passenger seat that later proved to be partially-full and cool to the touch. Officers performed several field sobriety tests, all of which indicated intoxication. Malippa was arrested for DWI and later blew a .17% in a pair of blood-alcohol tests.
On April 21, at approximately 11:53 p.m., police responded to the scene of an accident on Route 3 East. There they questioned Frank Armetta, 21, of Lyndhurst, who according to two witnesses had cut across three lanes of traffic without signaling and crashed into a guard rail at high speed. Police noticed the odor of alcohol on Armetta as well as watery bloodshot eyes. Armetta failed several field sobriety tests and was arrested for careless driving and DWI. He later blew a .10% and a .11% in a pair of blood-alcohol concentration tests.

On April 18, at approximately 10:10 p.m., officers on patrol observed a white van cut off their police car. Police stopped the vehicle and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath. After failing a field sobriety test, police then arrested the driver, 35-year-old Rodrigo Castro of Newark, for driving while intoxicated. His vehicle was impounded and he was released to a responsible party after receiving summonses.
On April 20, at approximately 12:44 a.m., officers responded to the Belleville Turnpike at Chestnut Street on a report of damage to a vehicle. A witness claimed a Kia, driven by 51-year-old Brian Callaghan of Kearny, struck two parked vehicles. Officers approached Callaghan and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. After failing a field sobriety test, he was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. He was released to a responsible party after receiving summonses.
On April 21, at approximately 2:04 a.m., officers on patrol observed a blue Nissan Murano exit the driveway of The Stack restaurant at 205 River Road without headlights and drive over milk crates at the edge of the lot. On River Road, the vehicle crossed over the double-yellow lines. Police stopped the vehicle and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath. After failing a field sobriety test, police arrested 25-year-old Andre Taylor, Jr. of Newark for driving while intoxicated. During processing, police found Taylor had two active criminal warrants out of Newark in the amount of $200. He was processed and released to a responsible party after posting $200 bail.

On April 21, at approximately 11:56 p.m., an officer observed two females leaving a bar in East Rutherford apparently intoxicated. The officer followed the vehicle as it passed through Rutherford, observing it swerve in the lane and go over the double yellow line on Orient Way. The officer affected a motor vehicle stop and spoke with the driver, 48-year-old Patricia Conti of Rutherford, who displayed a driver’s license belonging to her sister who closely resembles her. The officer detected the odor of alcohol on Conti’s breath and she failed a field sobriety test. Conti was also found to be in possession of several pills without a prescription. She was charged with DWI, hindering apprehension, falsely accusing another, careless driving, driving while suspended, and possession of pills without a prescription.
Fraud
North Arlington
On April 22, officers were dispatched to Shields Place off of Arlington Boulevard on a report of a fraud that occurred on April 10 between 3 and 4 p.m. The victim and a neighbor said two men arrived at the victim’s house in an Enterprise van with New York license plates claiming the town sent them to check the victim’s chimney. The men checked the chimney, said it needed repair and put tar around it. They then claimed the victim owed them $3,800 and asked her to write a check payable to Master Touch Maintenance. The woman took a certified check out from the bank and gave it to them. The victim later put a stop payment on the check.
