Lady Gaels top Lady Vikings to help along tourney bid

With the seeding this week for the Bergen County Tournament, South Bergenite teams were looking last week to either get in or improve their seeding.

Both North Arlington and St. Mary’s were scrambling for wins last week to qualify for the Bergen County Tournament.

Both teams faced each other on Thursday as the Lady Gaels came out on top as they nipped the Lady Vikings, 5-4, in extra innings. Allison Hild collected two RBI for St. Mary’s in the BCSL National victory in Rutherford. Megan Maffei received the victory in the circle while North Arlington pitcher Samantha Veneziano took the loss. Veneziano also had an RBI for North Arlington. Erin Mulrain and Stephanie Spanarkel had an RBI each for the Lady Gaels. St. Mary’s scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Despite the loss both the Lady Gaels and Lady Vikings appeared to qualify for the county tournament with .500 records at the end of the week.

After taking North Arlington on Saturday, the Gaels took care of Lyndhurst on Friday with a 16-2 victory that secured a Bergen County bid. St. Mary’s Pitcher Kaitlyn Wasylyk had a big day in the circle as with the stick. Wasylyk scattered seven hits while compiling six RBI. Vannessa Romero and Lauren Zdanowicz had three RBI each for the Lady Gaels in the BCSL National game.

On Saturday the Lady Vikings needed a victory to qualify for the county tournament and they accomplished it with an 8-3 victory on the road at Garfield in an independent game. Like Wasylyk in the win over Lyndhurst. The North Arlington pitcher also did it in the win over the Boilermakers. Lady Vikings hurler Kerrin Dys scattered six hits while smashing a home run while notching three RBI for the day. North Arlington broke open a 3-3 tie in the top of the fifth and sixth innings. Kristen Palatella and Samantha Veneziano added two RBI to the Lady Vikings cause.

Queen of Peace is searching for a state tournament bid and received a boost on Saturday with a 15-4 win at Manchester. Jessica Speers got the victory in the circle and fired a one-hitter on the road. Speers also added an RBI while Michele Mattia, Karyn Bishof and Lauren Petrucelli added an RBI each. The Lady Golden Griffins raised its record to 5-9.

Rutherford stayed a step behind Tenafly for the BCSL American lead after shutting out Englewood, 13-0, on Friday. Senior pitcher Veronica McGorry threw a one-hitter. The freshman twins, of Paige and Jenna Goldsack, combined for six RBI, four from Paige. In the five-inning game, the Lady Bulldogs scored 11 runs in the third inning to put away the Maroon Raiders.
