Vank Winkle grabs first win against the Pirates
Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Michael Paskas, league volunteer.
Village Gourmet (2-0) began the season with two wins. First, a 4-2 win over PBA of Hasbrouck Heights with help from Rex MacMillan who had two hits, and then a 5-2 victory over Cinelli's of Wood-Ridge. Thomas Allen had a triple in each game as Bryan Kelly (2-0) picked up both wins and Robert Buell managed to get both saves. Joaquin Puig went three-for-four and Peter 'Babe Ruth' Filos hit a single and got two RBIs in the win vs. Cinelli's. The Rutherford Elks beat Segovia 21 -12 in a slugfest. The Elks hammered out 18 hits and were led by Anthony Dapuzzo, Jimmy Fecanin and Jimmy Kenyan who each had three hits. James Gonzalez had a triple and Joe Tierney had a clutch two out RBI single. Scoring at least three times each were Patrick Dapuzzo, Anthony Dapuzzo, James Gonzalez and Jimmy Fecanin. The Elks also played the Carlstadt/E.R. Yankees to a 6-6 tie. Elks were led by the pitching of Danny Derner, Anthony Dapuzzo and Jimmy Fecanin. Brandon Ottavio, Joe Tierney, Patrick Dapuzzo and Jimmy Ryan each hit the ball hard in leading Elks back from an early 5-1 deficit.
The Rutherford PBA were lead by Bryan Gaschke's three runs scored and a solid combined pitching effort by Jesse Petronio, Kevin McGorry, and Robbie Segro, to beat Rita's 5-3 on Saturday. Petronio started the game, going four innings and striking out six. McGorry earned the win with two solid innings of relief, and Segro got the save for striking out the side in the bottom of the 7th. Petronio pitched out of bases-loaded jams in the first and second innings and Segro, while at short, made an incredible Jeter-like diving play to get McGorry out of a tight jam in the 5th with two men on.
Van Winkle won its first game of the year beating the Carlstadt/East Rutherford Pirates. Van Winkle had a total of 16 hits in the come from behind win. Sam Rentschler had a great game with three hits and driving in two runs. Hot hitting Tyler Allen also joined the hit parade driving in three runs. Thirteen-year-old Anthony Gallo drove in the winning run on a line drive single in the bottom of the 7th inning. Van Winkle starter Tyler Hanson gave up three hits and one earned run and struck out four. Francis Rossi came on in relief to pitch the 7th to shut down the Pirates striking out two and picking up his first win of the year.
Franks GMC (1-1) lost to PBA of Hasbrouck Heights, 7-4. Franks took an early lead 2-0, but gave up three in the third inning and trailed the rest of the game. Franks clawed back to within two runs but the 2007 South Bergen Champions never relinquished the lead. Michael Paskas pitched the first four innings and Christopher Skowronski went the final three. Franks runs were scored by Jim LaFaso and Rich DelOtero.
