123 pounds discovered

(by Daniel O'Keefe - April 23, 2008)

Carlstadt police seized 123 pounds of marijuana that was discovered in a tractor-trailer shipment received at Allied Beverage Company on Washington Avenue. The marijuana is said to have a street value of approximately $500,000.

Police received a call on Monday, April 14, from employees of Allied Beverage Company when they discovered the drugs in the back of a recently delivered tractor-trailer shipment. Employees were unloading the truck, which contained 1,059 cases of Patron brand tequila, when they came across the drugs. The marijuana was packed in eight 15.4 pound bundles tightly wrapped in cellophane and brown wrapping paper with an extra layer of foil on the inside.

Detective Dave Smith and Lieutenant Chris Nielson of the Carlstadt Police responded to the scene. The trailer was sealed in Laredo, TX after being stocked by a liquor distributor and then shipped to Stem, N.C. There the trailer was moved to a different tractor and brought to Carlstadt.

Police observed that the trailer’s seal, which had been put on in Laredo, was unbroken. Trailer seals are made so that they can only be removed with a bolt cutter and each seal has a distinct serial number to prevent anyone from breaking it and replacing it with another, according to Detective Sergeant Anthony Bellina of the Carlstadt Police.

Bellina said the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office has been notified and that police are in the process of subpoenaing surveillance footage and documentation from Laredo, where the tractor was stocked. Police withheld the name of the liquor distributor.

Bellina said police believe the marijuana was intended for distribution in North Carolina.

"Someone’s out a lot of money," said Bellina.
