Queen of Peace’s softball team won its game in the annual Friends of Sara Tournament in Wallington and did it in exciting fashion on Saturday.
The Lady Golden Griffins scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning and then Queen of Peace held on in the bottom of the inning. The Golden Griffins defeated High Tech, 4-2. Michelle Matia got the game-winning hit in the top of the ninth inning with a triple. The hit scored Lauren Petrucelli for a 3-2 lead for Queen of Peace. Matia would score later on a wild pitch. The late inning heroics made a winner of Golden Griffins pitcher Jill Demarco.
The Golden Griffins led 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, but High Tech scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the contest into extra innings. Matia had two RBI for the day. Queen of Peace raised its record to 3-5.
With a taste of the upcoming tournament, Rutherford did not get a good taste at Paramus Catholic as they fell in the independent game on Saturday, 8-3. The Lady Bulldogs found themselves behind 5-1 in the third inning and could not respond. Tricia Connelly had an RBI for Rutherford. Lady Bulldogs pitcher Veronica McGorry took the loss in the circle for Rutherford. The Lady Bulldogs’ record dropped to 7-2.
On Friday, Rutherford’s offense was there with the 10-0 victory at home over Cliffside Park. The offensive support helped Briellyn Brancato get her first win of the season in the circle as she gave McGorry a break. Brancato allowed only two hits. Offensively, Jenna Goldsack had a big day with five RBI. Goldsack did it with a pair of home runs.
Talking about shutouts, Becton pitcher Andi Nunziato threw a quality one on Friday as she fired a four hitter in the Lady Wildcats 4-0 victory on the road.
In the BCSL National contest Becton scored a run in the top of the first inning and that was enough for the Lady Wildcats. Deana Dedovitch had a pair of RBI while Nunziato and Jessica Knapp had an RBI each. The Wildcats raised its record to 5-2 and are in the race with St. Mary’s for the National lead.
The Lady Gaels saw their standing in the National dropped a bit on Friday at home after a 6-1 loss to Wood-Ridge. Ali Hild grabbed the lone RBI for St. Mary’s while Gaels pitcher Kaitlyn Wasylyk took the loss.
North Arlington got a must win on Friday with an 8-2 victory at home over Harrison.
The win gave the Lady Vikings a 6-4 record as they look to get back to the Bergen County and state tournaments.
Kerin Dys received the victory in the circle for North Arlington. She also did it with bat with a pair of RBI. Kristen Palatela also had a pair of RBI for the Lady Vikings. North Arlington put away the game in the bottom of the second inning with seven runs. Erin Lewis, Samantha Veneziano, Caitlin Dys and Debbie Pedro added an RBI each.
