Mixed start for Babe Ruth teams

Editor’s note: The following was submitted by Mike Paskas, league volunteer.

Rutherford PBA (1-1) won last Sunday night against Woodridge Cinelli’s by a score of 9-8. Jesse Petronio pitched a strong seven innings for PBA. Max Herrmann had a huge two-run double with two outs and PBA had key hits from Kevin McGorry, Dan Geraldi, J.J. Watt and an RBI from Rob Segro. PBA tied the game in the seventh and eventually won on a bases loaded walk to Andy Capobianco.

Three nights later, PBA lost to Wallington by a score of 14-1. TJ Husted had two very strong defensive games behind the plate and JJ Watt continued with his hot bat with two hits and reached base three times. Max Herrmann came into a difficult nine-run deficit, but battled on and got some valuable experience against a great hitting Wallington team.

The Franks GMC team (1-0) opened the season in East Rutherford versus the Cardinals. Franks pushed a couple runs across to win 2-0 behind a strong pitching performance of Chris Skowronski. Skowronski had 14 strikeouts and gave up only two hits. Catcher Jim LaFaso and outfielder Nick Lacata both reached base and scored when shortstop Mike Paskas was hit by a pitch and Skowronski walked. Outfielder Rich DelOtero had two hits and played flawless defense along with third baseman Chris Dunn, second baseman Darien Panella and first baseman Suhash Patel.

The Boiling Springs Masons won a close opener last Tuesday night, 5-4 over Wallington behind the strong pitching of pitcher Bob Miskura and third baseman Michael Hadrava. The Masons also played good defense turning a double play to get out of a jam. Austin Okula and Paul Pappacino made plays in the final inning to seal the game. The Masons played well as a team and everyone contributed to the win.

The Rutherford Elks lost their opener to Woodridge’s Ritas, 7-1. Rutherford’s Village Gourmet (1-0) beat Hasbrouck Heights PBA 4-2 and Van Winkle (0-1) lost a close one to Wallington, 7-6. Rutherford games were umpired by Gary Lisanti, Keith Hanley and John McAndrew.
