Parents vote down school uniform policy
(by Corey Klein - April 21, 2008)
A proposal to begin a school uniform policy in North Arlington elementary schools will not move forward after a second survey showed inadequate support from parents.
In order to implement a school uniform policy, the board of education needed at least 75 percent of the parents in favor of it. Sixty-five percent of parents supported the policy for Jefferson and Washington schools and 70 percent of parents favored the policy for Roosevelt School, according to board president George McDermott.
Also, the percentage of parents who responded to the survey, which was handed out with student report cards two weeks ago, doubled from a previous survey. Eighty-four, 81 and 76 percent of parents voiced their opinion on the uniform policy at Jefferson, Washington and Roosevelt schools respectively.
The board called for a second survey after the first survey garnered less than half of parents polled. Over 70 percent of the parents who responded to the first survey supported the uniform policy, which was enough to begin a uniform policy next year. However, the board decided to take another vote following a low turnout of the last survey and a groundswell of opposition to the uniform policy at board of education meetings.
"More people voted and it gave a truer number," said McDermott. "We will not consider the uniform policy this year."
The board also decided to move the percentage of parents needed to kickstart the policy up from 70 percent to 75 percent.
