School budget passes by a hair

(by Corey Klein - April 17, 2008)

Voters passed the North Arlington school board budget by a paper-thin margin, according to borough administrator Terence Wall. After conducting a recount of absentee ballots, the borough determined the final count to be 473 in favor and 470 opposed.

School taxes in North Arlington will rise 4.6 percent for the average taxpayer, amounting to $190.80 annually for a taxpayer owning a property valued at $180,000.

In total, a taxpayer owning the average assessed property will pay $4,368.24 in school taxes for the 2008-2009 school year. Last year, the same taxpayer paid $4,177.44, a 3.5-percent or $141.08 jump from the previous year.

Last year’s budget did not pass. Voters defeated that budget following a gargantuan 33 percent increase in the municipal portion of borough property owner’s tax bills. This year, residents can expect a zero percent tax increase on the municipal portion of their tax bills.
