Lyndhurst Bears win first game of season
St. Mary’s and Becton were near the top of the BCSL National standings as of last week and both helped themselves out on Friday.
While the Gaels are 3-4, a couple of the losses are against tough independent contest like IHA and Clifton, St. Mary’s is rebounding this season in the league and is looking that 2008 will be a return to the past when the Lady Gaels dominated the National.
Inside the division St. Mary’s won a key contest at Secaucus, 5-1, Lady Gaels pitcher Kaitlyn Wasylyk scattered seven hits while St. Mary’s received offensive contributions from several sources including Stephanie Spanarkel, Maeghan Maffei, Vanessa Romero, Caroline Stutz and Erin Mulrain. Maffei stood out with a home run.
Before the win against Secaucus, the Gaels took care of Weehawken on the road, 4-1. Stephanie Serrao won her first game in the circle as she allowed only three hits. St. Mary’s led 3-0 after the first three innings to take the National win.
On Saturday, St. Mary’s stayed toe-to-toe with Group 4 powerhouse, Clifton, but the Gaels could not tame the Mustangs. St. Mary’s lost 4-1 at Clifton.
The Wildcats increase its record 2-1 after shutting out Harrison, 10-0, on Friday.
Becton hurler Andi Nunziato threw a one-hitter while she got enough support in the first three innings.
Behind home runs from Chelsea Marafelias and Alyssa Banca, the Wildcats led 10-0 after three innings. Marafelias had three RBI on the day in the National contest.
North Arlington came from behind on Friday against Wallington, but the Panthers came back themselves with a pair of runs to crush the Vikings thoughts of a victory. North Arlington scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning for a 4-3, but Wallington added the runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Lady Vikings fell 5-4.
North Arlington (2-3) won back-to-back game to start the season on April 7 as the Vikings took care of Ridgefield, 12-0, on the road in an independent game. Debbie Pedro and Erin Lewis had three RBI each while Kristin Amador contributed a pair of RBI for North Arlington.
Lyndhurst won its first game of the season on April 8 when the Lady Golden Bears defeated Harrison on the road. Melinda Marin took the victory in the circle in the 11-2 win over the Lady Blue Tide. The combination of Nicole Hernandez and Cassandra Indri had three RBI each to lead the Lyndhurst offense. Nicole Meyers and Brianna Mamente had a pair of RBI to add to the Golden Bears offense.
