Joseph Spaccavento (Coach)
Joe arrived at North Arlington High School in September of 1983 after a few years teaching and coaching at North Bergen High School. He accepted a position at NA as the Physics Teacher and had some prior coaching experience in Baseball and Basketball, so was approached by the Athletic Director, Rip Collins. Joe was asked if he’d consider being the assistant girl’s softball coach. After about 5 minutes of laughing and explaining to Rip that he didn’t think he could or would want to coach girls, he gave in and accepted it. Coaching females for the first time was an experience. Joe gained a new found appreciation for how hard girls worked and how dedicated they were. Then in the fall of 1984, Rip approached Joe again, this time to become an assistant girls’ basketball coach. Joe spent 10 years as an assistant softball coach before becoming the head coach and 14 years as an assistant basketball coach before taking over as the now current head coach. Joe cites the pleasure of working under Mr. John Galante and Mr. Dan DiGugliemo and currently with Chrissy Costello and Karen Smith as a credit for staying in the profession. Joe appreciated the quality of young ladies year after year that motivated him to continue. Over twenty-five years in coaching, including seasons in JV Softball, JV Basketball, Varsity Softball, and Varsity Basketball, his teams amassed 549 wins and 153 losses. He has made an impact in life lessons with lifetime friendships throughout that time. He had a freshman girl’s team that went undefeated in JV softball, won the Bergen County JV Championship in 1988, and has been in State Tournaments in 22 out of the 25 years involved. His teams also are annual entrees in the County Tournaments. He has captured the Viking Tournament almost yearly throughout his time as the Head coach. Joe Spac’s 2001 Basketball team won the school’s first female Sectional Basketball Championship. A highlight that remains is the parade through town of fire trucks, police cars and team bus, and a declaration of "Coach Joe Spaccavento Day" in North Arlington from Mayor Kaiser.
1988 Girl’s Softball Team Champions
The 88 team had all three attributes; they accomplished a great deal and were instrumental in maintaining the Lady Vikings run of excellence from the early 80’s through the mid 90’s. During this run the NA Softball program was one of the premier programs in Bergen County. Under the tutelage of head coach John Galante and assistant coach Joe Spaccavento and the leadership of Captains Christine Morrison and Valerie Kozuch, the lady Vikings were a program to be reckoned with.
Blessed with the combination of veteran leadership and youthful enthusiasm the Lady Vikings accomplished that rare feat of winning the League Championship and a State Sectional Title in 1988. Their dominance continued through the years, as the Lady Vikings won over 300 games in a 15 year period.
A love of the game and a collection of great memories will be with all of the players and coaches for the rest of their lives. Members of the team: Laura Miller, Kim Miller, Dana Van Syckel, Carolyn Swiss, Andrea Sprague, Cheryl Gnoinski, Jennifer Lemke, Michele Kozuch, Valerie Kozuch, Angela Katsios, Christine Morrison, Karen Nelson, Janine Smara, Lisa Ann Fedroff and Kristen Nelson.
