Burglary/Theft

East Rutherford

On March 29, at approximately 9:46 a.m., a Pennsylvania man reported his silver 2000 Dodge Intrepid stolen from the parking lot of the Residence Inn at 10 Murray Hill Pkwy. The car contained several of the man’s credit cards as well as an undisclosed value of after-market video and audio equipment. Later, at approximately 11:19 a.m., a Virginia man reported the theft of a Magellan GPS system from his silver 2004 Toyota while it was parked in the same lot.

On March 29, at approximately 3:58 p.m., a Saddle River man reported the theft of his daughter’s purse from a meeting room at the Sheraton Hotel at 2 Meadowlands Plaza Dr. The purse contained a cell phone, iPod, and digital camera estimated at $520, and was reportedly stolen while the woman was performing in a dance recital.

On March 31, at approximately 10:14 a.m., a West Paterson man reported that $535 dollars of merchandise purchased at Sam’s Club on Route 17 North had been stolen from the unlocked rear doors of his 1995 Chevy Astro van.

On April 2, at approximately 7:38 a.m., Sheraton security personnel notified East Rutherford police of a smashed driver’s side window on a rented blue 2008 Dodge parked in the hotel’s lot. Missing was a Garmin GPS system valued at $350.

On April 2, at approximately 11:18 a.m., owners of a car dealership at 660 Paterson Plank Road reported the theft of a black 2009 Toyota Camry XLE from their lot. The car has a sticker price of $28,149.

On April 3, at approximately 11:22 a.m., a New York woman reported the theft of a white 1998 Ford van with the words "DJ Equipment" written on it from the BJ’s Wholesale club lot at 300 Route 17 North. The van reportedly contained $7000 worth of DJ equipment.

Lyndhurst

On April 3, at approximately 6:15 p.m., police were alerted to a shoplifting incident at ShopRite, located at 540 New York Ave. Upon arrival police charged 53-year-old Paul Dischler of Lyndhurst with shoplifting $21.98 worth of liquor.

On April 3, at approximately 1:29 p.m., a South Hackensack company taking underground video of township infrastructure near the corner of Sanford and Riverside Avenues reported the theft of two aluminum pipes, each valued at $650. The first pipe was eight feet long and six inches in diameter; the second was three feet long and six inches in diameter as well.

On April 2, at approximately 6:07 p.m., a Wallingford, CT resident reported the theft of a $300 GPS unit from 2000 Buick parked at the Courtyard by Marriott, located at 1 Polito Ave. Entry to the vehicle was gained by a smashed window.

On March 28, at approximately 7 p.m., police were summoned to Stop & Shop on the report of shoplifting. Upon arrival, police charged husband and wife duo, 26-year-old Nicole Schilare-Aristiza and 26-year-old Andres Aristiza, both of Lyndhurst, with shoplifting $30.31 worth of goods from the store.

North Arlington

On April 2, at approximately 6:02 p.m., police received a report of a burglary from the former A&R Tire building at 590 Ridge Road. The caller noticed a black vehicle parked next to a smashed out window on the side of the building. A heavyset Hispanic man in his late 40s, described as five feet and nine inches tall wearing a white shirt and dark pants exited the building after being spotted by the witness. He was carrying something as he exited the building, which still contains various materials, though the business is closed. He entered his vehicle and fled north on Ridge Road into Lyndhurst.

On March 30, at approximately 6:15 p.m., a victim visiting a friend on Front Street off of York Road reported parking a car at 5:15 p.m. Upon returning, the victim noticed a purse containing the victim’s drivers license, social security card, credit card and Verizon cell phone was missing from the front seat of the car. The car was unlocked and the purse was on the front seat of the car. The phone was valued at $150 and the purse was valued at $100.

Rutherford

On April 4, at approximately 9:15 a.m., employees at Stadium Auto Mall reported there were break-ins or attempted break-ins to five vehicles sometime between April 3 and the time of the report. A 2007 Chrysler had its front driver’s side lock and rear window broken and there was evidence of an attempt to steal the vehicle’s built-in DVD player. Someone entered the rear door of a 2008 Jeep and attempted to steal a spare tire but failed. Someone broke the rear window of a 2008 Ford and stole four power window regulators valued at $300 each. A 2006 Jeep had its driver’s side window broken. A dealer plate was also reported missing from the premises.

On April 4, at approximately 9:05 a.m., members of the Ambulance Corps. on Ames Avenue reported that to walky-talkies valued at $2,000 each were stolen. One had been missing since September, the other had been missing since March.

On April 3, at approximately 6:21 p.m., an employee of Stadium Auto Mall reported someone broke into a 2007 Ford and stole several radio controls and a temperature control. There was no sign of forced entry.

On April 3, at approximately 8:14 a.m., employees of Compuhelp Inc. on Highland Cross reported that window-mounted GPS devices had been stolen from four Honda vehicles. Two cars had their door handles pried open and four cars’ windows were broken.

On April 2, at approximately 8:39 p.m., employees of Stadium Auto Mall reported someone broke into a 2008 Ford, breaking the rear window and the driver’s side door handle in the process. Nothing was reported missing though there was damage to the dashboard.

On April 2, at approximately 7:15 a.m., a complainant reported someone tampered with the front driver’s side door of a 2006 Dodge pick-up truck while it was parked in the lot of the Extended Stay Motel. Nothing was stolen.

On March 30, at approximately 9:12 a.m., a complainant reported someone broke into his car by breaking the driver side door lock and stole a $200 GPS device sometime between March 29 and the time of the report while it was parked in the Extended Stay Motel lot.

On March 30, at approximately 2:24 p.m., a complainant reported someone stole her son’s bike sometime between 7 and 10:30 p.m. the previous day while he was at the Union School. The bike had been attached to a pole with a lock and when the child returned from class the bike and the lock were missing. They were valued at $209.

On March 29, at approximately noon, employees at Stadium Auto Mall reported four 2008 Ford Explorers were broken into. One had no sign of forced entry and had had its $200 power door control box and $700 dashboard climate control panel removed. One had its rear windshield smashed and a $1,295 DVD system stolen. One had its rear windshield smashed and its keyless entry door handle pulled off and a $3,400 combined navigation system and satellite radio stolen. One had its rear windshield smashed and its $2,000 sunroof stolen. A trailer toe hitch valued at $300 was also reported missing.

East Rutherford

On March 28, at approximately 4:56 p.m., East Rutherford police received a tip from an informant that nineteen-year-old Andrew Phiavilayvong of Rutherford and a white female juvenile would be entering East Rutherford via Park Avenue and carrying heroin. A plainclothes officer intercepted the two in the vicinity of Park Avenue and Orchard. Later searches yielded a hypodermic needle along with a total of nine glassine baggies containing heroin and labeled "Undefeated". Phiavilayvong was charged with possession of heroin and possession of a hypodermic needle, and released pending an April 2 court date.

On April 2, at approximately 10:10 p.m., police observed a green 1997 Saturn parked with its headlights off at the end of Oak Street. Upon approaching the car, officers noticed two individuals, one counting a large sum of money in the rear passenger seat. On interacting with the vehicles occupants, police detected the smell of burnt marijuana, and questioning led to the discovery of fourteen individually wrapped bags of marijuana in the vehicle’s glove box. The vehicle’s driver, identified as 20-year-old Joseph Foglia of Lyndhurst, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and intent to distribute.

Lyndhurst

On March 28, at approximately 9:31 a.m., police investigating a suspicious individual in the driveway at 9 Polito Ave. found the man in question to be in possession of marijuana. The suspect, 25-year-old John Valade of Saco, ME was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and was released after posting $500 bail.

Rutherford

On March 31, at approximately 3:20 p.m., the landlord of the condo complex at 100 River Oaks Dr. reported he was cleaning out an empty condo unit when he found an empty glassine bag in the master bedroom and another bag with a white powder substance believed to be cocaine in the living room.

Criminal Mischief

Rutherford

On April 3, at approximately 7:46 a.m., a complainant reported someone had scratched the letter "B" onto the side of his vehicle sometime overnight while it as parked in the borough hall lot.

On April 3, at approximately 7:47 a.m., officers discovered someone had spray-painted the name "Elvis" on a stop sign located at the corner of Mortimer and West Newell Avenues.

On April 3, at approximately 5:08 a.m., officers discovered someone had spray-painted the word "Meth" on a stop sign at the corner of Ridge Road and Woodland Avenue.

DWI

Lyndhurst

On March 31, at approximately 10:42 p.m., police effected a motor vehicle stop near the corner of New York and Summit Avenues for a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Upon further investigation, police arrested 43-year-old Ronald Young, Jr. of Belleville for driving while intoxicated. According to police, he was soon after transported to Hackensack University Medical Center after he admitted to using two bags of heroin earlier in the day. Young was also charged with driving while suspended and refusal to submit to a breath test.

North Arlington

On March 30, at approximately 1:31 a.m., an officer on patrol saw a blue 2006 Honda Civic speeding on Ridge Road near Belmount Avenue. Police said the Civic nearly struck a vehicle in front of it before they stopped the car and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath. The driver, 35-year-old Louis Sandomenico of Lyndhurst, refused to take a field sobriety test or a breath test. Police determined he was under the influence and arrested him. He was processed and released to a responsible party.

On March 30, at approximately 5:15 p.m., Long Hill Township police requested assistance from North Arlington in locating a North Arlington-registered vehicle involved in a hit and run. Police found the vehicle traveling in the area of Elm Street and Exton Avenue and spoke to the driver, 22-year-old Magdalena Toloczko of North Arlington. Toloczko matched the description given by Long Hill police. Police detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath and placed her under arrest for driving while intoxicated. Her vehicle was impounded and she was released to a responsible party.

North Arlington

On March 31, at approximately 10:13 a.m., a resident on Noel Drive off of Ridge Road reportedly fell victim to a phone scam. The victim received a phone call on March 10 from an individual claiming to offer seniors health benefit cards. The caller asked for the victim’s social security number, which she did not provide, and her bank account number. The victim provided the caller with her Valley National checking account number. On March 14, the actor withdrew $389 from the victim’s account.

Rutherford

On March 28, at approximately 3:15 p.m., a woman reported that her husband from whom she is separated has been forging checks in her name. Three checks for $1,500, $1,984 and $2,000 had been forged between March 17 and the day of the report. She filed an affidavit for probable cause to issue him a summons.

On March 28, at approximately 9:15 a.m., a man reported he received his credit report and discovered three accounts he hadn’t started. The accounts were taken out at JC Penny’s, Sleepy’s and Dell Computers and all were so far in good standing. The accounts were frozen and police are investigating.
