Arson

North Arlington

On March 27, at approximately 9:39 p.m., police responded to Arlington Avenue off of Rutherford Place on a report of a loud explosion. The witness reported seeing an exploded water bottle with a cloud of smoke coming from it. Police called the Bergen County Bomb team to see if it was safe, secured it and took it into possession. Police believe the explosion was created by mixing baking soda and vinegar.

Burglary/theft

East Rutherford

On March 24, at approximately 7:36 a.m., an East Rutherford man reported the theft of several power tools from his white Chevrolet truck during the course of the previous night. The passenger side cargo door of the vehicle had been punched out.

North Arlington

On March 27, at approximately 5 p.m., the manager of Blockbuster Video at 35 River Road reported a theft from the store. Someone picked up an Ultra Series Flip Video camera from the front of the store, took it to the rear, unpacked it and placed the container in an aisle before exiting the store without paying for it. The camera was valued at $120.

Rutherford

On March 26, at approximately 5:44 p.m., a student at Rutherford High School reported a pair of running shoes valued at $40 was taken from his locker sometime between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

On March 26, at approximately 4:32 p.m., a complainant reported the rear license plate was stolen from his 2005 Mazda sometime between March 25 and the day of the report while it was parked on West Passaic Avenue.

Criminal Mischief

North Arlington

On March 24, at approximately 3:19 p.m., a victim reported damage to a 2007 Toyota Rav4 parked on Argyle Place off of Exton Avenue. Someone etched "TJ was here" into the vehicle.

On March 24, at approximately 9 a.m., a victim reported damage to a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse parked on Chestnut Street off of the Belleville Turnpike sometime over the weekend. Someone pushed in the driver’s side door lock and scratched the driver’s side quarter panel and door.

On March 22, at approximately 6:33 a.m., a victim reported damage to a 2005 Toyota Highlander parked on Beaver Avenue off of Ridge Road during the overnight hours. Someone threw a concrete block through the rear window of the car.

Rutherford

On March 27, at approximately 9:18 p.m., a complainant reported the driver side mirror of his 2003 Volkswagon was smashed while it was parked at the intersection of Chestnut Street and Franklin Place.

On March 27, at approximately 2:27 p.m., a complainant reported a first floor window of his Home Avenue residence was discovered to be broken. Police found no sign of forced or attempted entry.

On March 26, at approximately 11:07 p.m., an officer reported that a large wooden post from the Lincoln Park gazebo had been broken off and was lying several feet away.

On March 25, at approximately 5:30 p.m., a complainant reported he parked his 2004 Audi in the borough hall parking lot and upon returning he found the passenger side door was inoperable.

On March 24, at approximately 11:08 p.m., an officer found one of the spindles from the Lincoln Park gazebo had been dislodged.

DWI

East Rutherford

On March 27, at approximately 3:22 a.m., police stopped 26-year-old Jose Matos of West New York after a two mile chase on Route 3 Eastbound. A patrol unit initially noticed Matos driving erratically and speeding at 102 miles per hour in a white 1996 Acura. Matos pulled over only after pursuit, and immediately admitted to officers that he had received a DWI two months prior. Officers noticed Matos’ watery eyes and an open bottle of rum in the vehicle, and administered field sobriety tests. After failing all of the field tests, Matos was arrested and blew a .13% blood-alcohol concentration in a pair of tests. He was charged with DWI.

North Arlington

On March 27, at approximately 2:07 a.m., officers observed a red Honda make a left turn through a red light on Ridge Road at the Belleville Turnpike. Police stopped the vehicle and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath. After failing a field sobriety test, police arrested 22-year-old Ahmed Aly of Brooklyn, NY for driving while intoxicated. He was processed and released to a responsible party.

Fraud

Rutherford

On March 26, at approximately 4:51 p.m., a complainant reported that he had used his debit card to purchase $40 worth of gas at the gas station at 370 Union Ave. Later in the day the card was charged another $40 without his approval. Police referred the matter to the county Division of Weights and Measures, which had recently charged the same station with a violation. The bank credited the complainant for the additional $40.

Warrants

East Rutherford

On March 25, at approximately 8:06 p.m., a patrol officer performed a random computer check on a black 1996 Nissan, which revealed that the driver had a suspended license and a $500 State Police warrant. The driver, twenty-two-year old Alexander Harvin of Secaucus, was placed under arrest. Harvin’s passenger, nineteen-year-old Anthony Bruno of Hoboken, was also arrested on a $500 warrant out of Woodridge.

On March 26, at approximately 2:18 p.m., a patrol unit stopped a man in a silver 2005 Mercedes after he ran a red light on Union Avenue. Upon the stop, the man, who later identified himself as Daniel Ely, 31 of Elizabeth, claimed to have no identification and offered police several different names and social security numbers. Ely was placed under arrest and later admitted that he had hid his wallet between the front seats of the car to avoid a ticket for driving with a suspended license. A judge set bail at $5000.

North Arlington

On March 27, at approximately 9:23 p.m., officers responded to Ridge Road near Albert Street on the report of a dispute. Police spoke to a man involved in the dispute and asked him for identification. The man said he did not have any and gave the name "Dominic Serratelli" and provided a false date of birth. Police discovered the man was actually 41-year-old Kevin Galladay of North Arlington and had six active warrants for his arrest. He had a $2,500 criminal warrant out of Jersey City, a criminal and a traffic warrant out of Belleville amounting to $750 and a criminal warrant and two traffic warrants out of Newark amounting to $350. He was charged with providing false information, released on summons and turned over to Jersey City police after processing.
