Griffins lead county honors

(by Edward Kensik - March 26, 2008)

Queen of Peace wrestlers continued to collect their honors after taking home three medals from the state finals earlier this month in Atlantic City.

The Golden Griffins placed three wrestlers on the All Bergen County first team, only behind the four that Don Bosco collected. In all six Queen of Peace wrestlers finished in the three all-county teams.

This has been an up-and-down season for the Golden Griffins wrestling program in their inaugural season. It has been anything on the down side on the mats, but the school lost its appeal of the NJSIAA decision to place the team on probation for two years. The team is not eligible for team titles, league, county of state for the past 2007-08 season and for next season.

But as it was shown in the state individual tournament, there were eight Golden Griffins wrestlers who qualified for the state finals in Atlantic City and three, Matt Fusco, Frank Cagnina and Anthony Perrotti placed in the top eight in Atlantic City.

Cagnina, Fusco and senior Mike Trasso garnered All Bergen County honors in 112, 125 and 140-pound weight classes.

Cagnina came in third at 112 and this was his second year as first team All Bergen choice. He also captured a county, district and regional championships. Cagnina collected a 41-2 record for the season.

Fusco also came in third place at the state finals while going 40-2 for the 2007-08 season. Fusco, who transferred from St. Mary’s, won the district and regional championships. He also won a very competitive Bergen County title.

"I feel pretty good, but it would have been better to be in the state final," said Fusco after the state final. Fusco will be wrestling at Rutgers’ next season.

In Trasso, he made the most out of his senior season with a district and region championships. He finished with a 22-2 record for the season.

Freshman Perrotti and junior Glen Cannici captured second team All Bergen County at 103 and 135-pound classes. Queen of Peace junior Dominic Maurillo was named to the county third team at 145 pounds.

On the honorable mention list found several Rutherford wrestlers who good seasons in Bob Fecanin at 130, Jesse Kolich at 135, Charles DeCarlo at 160 and Nick Zurla at 185 pounds. Lyndhurst/North Arlington co-cop team had a pair of wrestlers on honorable mention in Matt Waldron at 130 and Eric Basile at 152. Becton/Wallington co-op team also had a pair of honorable mention wrestlers in Tom Kunc-Jasinsky at 189 and Szymon Popek at 215. Along with the six in the top three honors, Queen of Peace had a pair on the honorable mention list in Dominic Martinez in 119 and Jamie Westwood at 171 pounds.
