Mann named all county before saying goodbye

Leads contingent of five locals to take home honor

South Bergenite area girls basketball players filled up the Bergen County first team while Queen of Peace’s Bilal Dixon was the lone boys representative on the all county team.

There were four area girls representatives on the All Bergen County team with a pair from Rutherford and one from Becton and St. Mary’s.

Rutherford’s Jacki Mann and Becton’s Jessica Knapp led their perspective teams during their four years and now look forward to college.

Taking over the leadership role for the Lady Bulldogs will be junior forward Taylor Wootton who was first team All Bergen County. Lady Gaels junior Afryea Tolbert will look to take St. Mary’s next season to where they haven’t been before, a state title.

For Mann, she helped send Rutherford to three straight state sectional championships. The senior finished with 1,576 points and will play at Quinnipiac next season. She finished with 15.5 points per game this season along with 8.5 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game.

Knapp will be heading to the University of Penn next season after collecting more than 1,700 points and 1,100 rebounds, good for Becton school records in both categories. The Lady Wildcats senior was dominant for them in the points and the boards averaging 20 points and a dozen rebounds a game in the 2007-08 season.

On the boys side, Dixon dominated inside for the Golden Griffins, who won the BCSL American for the first time in the school’s history and also made the semi-finals of the Bergen County Jamboree. Dixon, who is going to Providence College next season, led the team in points, rebounds and blocked shots. The Golden Griffin averaged 18.5 points, 14 rebounds and 6 blocks per game as Queen of Peace stormed through the BCSL American and went undefeated.

Helping Mann push the Bulldogs to another undefeated season in the BCSL American was Wootton, who will be looked upon to stepping up with Mann gone next season. In only her junior season Wootton went over the thousand-point mark and averaged 15 points per game while grabbing seven rebounds and three assists in each contest.

In Tolbert St. Mary’s has had a leader for the last two years and there is a lot of optimism next season. Tolbert led the team in scoring with 17 points per game. The junior also contributed six rebounds and 3.7 steals for the Gaels.

Tolbert’s teammate Martina Ellerbe leads the rest of the girls honors with a second team all-county honor. Garnering honorable mention all county on the girls side are: Queen of Peace Brittany Turner, Rutherford’s Brittany O’Keefe, Becton’s Lauren Cosentino, North Arlington’s Tara Fisher and St. Mary’s Shanice Hawkins.

On the boys side Javae Gilchrist was named to the second team All Bergen County squad while another Dixon teammate, Dwayne Moffatt, garnered third team all-county nod. St. Mary’s Andrew Tedesco completed his career at the Rutherford school with a third team all-county honor. Lyndhurst’s Anthony Dorio and Jesse Estevez led the boys honorable mention all-county team along with North Arlington’s Peter Santos and St. Mary’s Travis Taylor.
