Bank catches fraud suspect smiling for camera

Police are on the lookout for a man they identified through surveillance as forging checks of unsuspecting victims.

On March 11, a Wood-Ridge husband-wife couple responded to headquarters to report that someone had been using their account to both deposit fraudulent checks and then in turn move onto another bank an immediately withdraw funds before the check was found invalid.

The husband told police that on March 1 someone had deposited a $1,500 check made out to him and issued by One Key Construction out of Hackensack at the Kearny Federal Savings Bank on Willow Street. Approximately 45 minutes later, the suspect went to the Lyndhurst branch of Kearny Federal and tried to withdraw $968.25 from the account by cashing a separate check, also made out to the victim. The account showed insufficient funds, but the check was signed with the victim’s name and the teller overrode the system and cashed the check. The check however was forged as it did not match the victim’s signature and the victim stated he had no affiliation with One Key Construction.

After talking with a security manager at Kearny Federal, police were able to obtain still photos of the suspect (inset) at the teller’s counter. A call to One Key Construction revealed that they don’t even use the same logos on the checks that the suspect was passing off as the company’s.

A similar incident is being investigated by the Hackensack Police Department. Anyone with information on the suspect is urged to call the East Rutherford detective bureau at 201-438-0168. Callers have the right to remain anonymous.
