BURGLARY/THEFT

Carlstadt

On March 3, at approximately 2:01 p.m., a complainant at Office Star Products, located at 472 Barell Ave., reported the theft of a 1999 GSCR Chassis Trailer with cargo container attached to it. The complainant reported the container held approximately 449 pieces of office furniture valued at $26,938.39. After being entered into the stolen vehicle registry, Newark police located the trailer. It was unknown by Carlstadt if the container was intact.

East Rutherford

On March 3, at approximately 1:18 p.m., a worker at the Charles Rodgers store on Route 17 North reported his blue 1984 Buick stolen. The vehicle contained approximately $600 worth of electronics.

On March 3, at approximately 7:51 p.m., a Hasbrouck Heights man reported the theft of approximately $400 in cash and $550 worth of video equipment stolen from his black 2007 Dodge Ram. A leather satchel containing personal documents was also reported missing, but oddly another leather bag was left in its place. Officers identified the owner of the second bag, an East Rutherford man who was at the same time reporting a theft from his 2008 Chevrolet while it was parked at Lowes on Route 17 North.

On March 1, at approximately 7:00 a.m., a Montauk, NY woman returned to her room at the Meadowlands Plaza Sheraton to find an unidentified man rifling through her belongings. When the woman screamed for help, the man left the room and entered an adjacent one. Police later identified the man as Francisco Sanchez, 20, of Clifton. Sanchez admitted to stumbling into the woman's room accidentally as a result of intoxication, and seizing on the opportunity to steal a wallet, credit cards, and a GPS unit. Sanchez was placed under arrest and later transferred to Bergen County Jail. A bail of $5,000 was set.

On February 29, at approximately 5:27 p.m., officers responded to a report of a vehicle theft in the lot behind the Homestead Village at 300 Route 3 East. The owner of a red 2007 Toyota reported a GPS system worth approximately $400 missing.

Lyndhurst

On March 6, at approximately 8:39 p.m., policed were alerted to a residential burglar alarm on the 100-block of Delafield Avenue. Upon arrival, police found that entry to the home had been made by force through a rear window. The first floor of the home was ransacked, but nothing appeared missing.

On March 6, police recovered a 2002 Chrysler that had been reported stolen out of Newark the prior day in the parking lot of the Quality Inn, located at 10 Polito Ave.

On March 5, a Passaic resident reported the theft of a 1997 Jeep from the parking lot of the Quality Inn sometime between 11a.m. and 3 p.m.

On March 5, at approximately 9:20 a.m., a complainant at a business on the 200-block of Ridge Road reported that the business had been entered forcibly through a side door and $500 was taken from within.

On March 1, at approximately 11:31 p.m., a Hawthorne resident reported the theft of a $250 leather jacket while at the Whiskey Café, located at 1050 Wall St. West.

Rutherford

On March 5, at approximately 4:54 p.m., a manager at Stadium Auto Mall on Route 17 reported that a 2005 Chrysler was stolen from the lot sometime between June and September of 2007.

On March 5, at approximately 2:41 p.m., a student at Felician College reported she was awaiting a refund check for $158.30 from the school and it never arrived. When she called the school to inquire about the check, she was informed the school had mailed it to her and that records showed it had already been cashed in Passaic.

On March 5, at approximately 11:24 a.m., a Ridge Road resident reported someone stole clothes and common silverware from his home sometime between Feb. 21 and Feb. 29. He noted that work was currently being done on his house and that during that time he had invited coworkers from New York City to his home on at least once occasion.

On March 3, at approximately 12:34 p.m., a student at Rutherford High School reported someone stole his wallet sometime between 7:40 a.m. and 8:50 a.m.

North Arlington

On March 7, at approximately 6:54 a.m., a victim reported unknown actors attempted to gain entrance to a residence on Eagle Street off of Gold Street. Several window screens on the residence were found to have holes in them and the kitchen window screen was ripped open and the window was partly raised.

On March 6, at approximately 9:22 p.m., a victim reported a burglary to a residence on Geraldine Road off of Bernice Road. The victim reported someone broke into a house from the backward, ripping out the screen to the bathroom window and forcing the window open. The unknown actor also pried open the rear door. The resident reported leaving the home at 6 p.m. and observing the damage upon returning at 9 p.m. The only item observed missing was a credit card.

On Feb. 29, at approximately 11:03 a.m., someone stole a hand truck and a gas canister from a Pepsi employee making a delivery to the Arlington Diner at 1 River Road. The hand truck was valued at $200 and the gas canister was worth $20.

CDS

Carlstadt

On Feb. 29, at approximately 8:33 p.m., police stopped a 2007 Honda Accord near the corner of Hoboken Road and Hackensack Street for disregarding a stop sign. Upon questioning the driver, 24-year-old Maurisa Darminio of Rutherford, she appeared nervous. Subsequently, police smelt the burnt odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. A search revealed five partially smoked marijuana cigarettes in the ashtray, one still smoking. Darminio also handed over a small Ziploc bag containing marijuana and a blue round metal grinder. She was arrested and charged with possession of CDS, possession of drug paraphernalia and was issued a summons for disregarding a stop sign.

East Rutherford

On March 3, at approximately 5:03 p.m., East Rutherford police received a call from a Passaic detective following a black Dodge Dakota through a major drug center in Passaic. The Passaic detective informed ERPD that the driver, later identified as Henry Monkowski, 42, of Wallington, may have entered East Rutherford via Paterson Avenue. After a pursuit along Bond and Maple Avenues in Wallington, East Rutherford police confronted Monkowski after he stopped at a gas station and a female passenger, later identified as Laura Reiger, 42, of Wallington, exited the vehicle and made her way hastily toward the bathroom. Officers stopped Reiger and placed Monkowski under arrest for driving with a suspended license. During the arrest, Reiger was observed chewing something, which she refused to identify. Officers were able to obtain the object, which appeared to be several rocks of crack cocaine wrapped in yellow paper. A vehicle search yielded a small glass crack pipe. Reiger was charged with possession of CDS and bail was set at $5,000.

On March 1, at approximately 3:56 p.m., an East Rutherford police officer performed a random registration search on a nearby 2005 Mercedes CK5. The operator of the vehicle, Angela Nowak, 25 of Wyckoff, was found to have a $600 warrant out of Hanover Township. Upon arrest and search of Ms. Nowak, officers discovered a rolled up dollar bill with a white powder residue, which later tested positive for cocaine. Nowak was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and later posted bail.

CRIMINAL MISCHIEF

East Rutherford

On March 4, at approximately 10:15 p.m., East Rutherford police responded to an anonymous call at New Park Tavern. On arriving, they observed a disorderly Eun Zanca, 51, of East Rutherford, who proceeded to shout a string of obscenities at the officers. When one officer approached Ms. Zanca, she struck his face and violently resisted arrest. An investigation revealed that Zanca had entered the New Park Tavern and attempted to order a drink from a bartender, who refused her on account of her intoxication. Zanca then slapped the bartender multiple times. While in custody at the East Rutherford Police Department, Zanca continued to shout obscenities at police, causing both her husband and her daughter to refuse to take custody of her.

Lyndhurst

On Feb. 29, at approximately 10:28 p.m., police were summoned to 262 Ridge Road for the report of a man out of control. Upon arrival, police found that 26-year-old Danny Cardozo of Lyndhurst had kicked in several doors on the second floor of the building and broke a window. He was arrested and charged with criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

Rutherford

On March 5, at approximately 3:01 p.m., police issued a summons for criminal mischief to 18-year-old Javier Calderon of Rutherford. The rear exterior wall of the Dunkin’ Donuts on Park Ave had been tagged with graffiti and police were able to identify Calderon from the surveillance video.

On March 4, at approximately 12:01 a.m., a man reported the window of his first floor apartment on Chestnut Street had just been broken 20 minutes prior by someone who fled in a dark-colored SUV with the lights off.

North Arlington

On March 3, at approximately 6 a.m., a victim on Halsey Place off of Schuyler Avenue reported parking a 1999 Ford pickup truck in front of a residence and finding the driver side window had been broken.

On March 1, at approximately 5:30 p.m., police received a report of graffiti spray painted on two dumpsters, several garbage cans and a cement wall on the side of Queen of Peace High School on Rutherford Place. The word "WAS" was on one Dumpster and a flower and the words "SOLD OUT" were spray painted on the other. The initials "DES" were spray painted on the window of the school and the words "JOHNNY" and "SOSIN" were spray painted on the doors of the school. The word "WAS" was spray painted several times on the cement wall and garbage cans.

DWI

Lyndhurst

On March 6, at approximately 3:09 p.m., police responded to a motor vehicle accident on Stuyvesant Avenue. Upon arrival, they found that 37-year-old Jean-Claude Linoir of Lyndhurst had struck one parked vehicle and proceeded to hit another that in turn was pushed into two more. He was subsequently arrested and charged with DWI.

On March 1, at approximately 11:21 p.m., 29-year-old Julio Sanchez of West Paterson was arrested and charged with DWI near the Whiskey Café, located at 1050 Wall St. West.

Fraud

Lyndhurst

On March 6, at approximately 4:16 p.m., police were informed of a relatively new fraud to hit the township. A Kingsland Avenue resident reported he had found a job as a quality control manager of CareerBuilder.com and his duties were to have items sent to him, inspect them for the extent of the damage and mail them back with pre-paid postage. He received what appeared to be a brand new pair of sneakers and the package was labeled with the name of an Ohio man. The complainant made contact with him and the man said he had not made the purchase and someone was using his credit to purchase and re-direct the items. The pre-paid postage that the complainant was using was marked to be sent overseas, to the Czech Republic.

Miscellaneous

North Arlington

On March 5, at approximately 10:30 a.m., police arrested 63-year-old George Bender for failing to register as a sex offender. Bender moved to a residence on Union Place on March 1 without notifying the North Arlington Police Department or the police department in his former town, Kearny, 10 days in advance of the move. He was arrested and processed. The judge set bail at $5,000 with a 10 percent option and he was released after posting $500 cash bail.
