CLASSES

SELF DEFENSE CLASS
Dragon Spirit Martial Arts will be offering a free weekly Women's Self Defense and Fitness Class every Wednesday evening. The goal of the weekly classes will be to empower the Women of Bergen County with the self-defense techniques and non-violent conflict resolution to defeat any attacker plus get in the best shape of their life. The Weekly Women's Self Defense and Fitness Class starts at 7:15 p.m. every Wednesday evening and is hosted at 550 Valley Brook Ave. in Lyndhurst. Each class lasts for 45 minutes and will include fun and friendly Black Belt Instruction as well as a light workout. Please dress comfortably in workout attire or sweats. KOREAN STUDIES
MiraeRo!, Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Korean Studies Program, is holding two information sessions for Korean-speaking adults who want to earn an Associate in Arts degree. The sessions will be held in the lobby of Dickinson Hall, located on the Hackensack side of FDU’s Metropolitan campus, from 6-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, and from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 5. Prospective students who come to the information sessions can meet with advisers, register for the program and ask additional questions. Tuition for the 60-credit program is $1,233 per three-credit course, which includes ESL tuition. Classes in both the part and full-time formats will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, plus Saturdays. The program offers start dates during Summer I (April-June) Summer II (June-September) and Fall (September-December) semesters. The information sessions will be held in the lobby of Dickinson Hall, which is located on the Hackensack side of FDU’s Metropolitan campus. CARIBBEAN CRUISE
Reservations are now available for the Knights of Columbus Council #4524 of East Rutherford Second Annual Caribbean Cruise. The trip will be departing on Sept. 14. The eight-day cruise will be aboard the Fun Ship Carnival Miracle of Carnival Cruise Line. The ship sails from New York to San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Thomas USVI and Tortola, BVI. The cruise is open to members of other Knights of Columbus Councils. The council also welcomes anyone wishing to travel who are not members of the Knights. Rates begin at just $785 per person based on two per interior state rooms. Included in the cost are: eight-day cruise, meals, entertainment and use of facilities while aboard ship and port and government taxes. GUARDSMEN AC TRIP
The Guardsmen of Rutherford are sponsoring a trip to Trump Plaza casino in Atlantic City on Wednesday, April 9. The bus will depart from Memorial Field in Rutherford at 8:30 a.m. and will return at 7:30 p.m. The price is $25 with a coin return of $20 and a lunch coupon of $5. MURDER MYSTERY
The GFWC Junior Woman’s Club of Rutherford (JWCR) is hosting “Murder on the Unique Express” on Friday, April 4, at 8 p.m. at the Woman’s Club of Rutherford Clubhouse. The evening includes a buffet dinner and Murder Mystery performance (presented by Cliffhanger Productions) and costs $50 per person. Seats are limited. FISH AND CHIPS

BROADWAY TRIPS
The Lyndhurst Department of Parks & Recreation, under the direction of Commissioner Tom DiMaggio has obtained tickets for two Broadway plays: Gypsy and Wicked. The Gypsy show is planned for Tuesday, August 19, at 8 p.m. Tickets are orchestra and are $90 per person (adult or child) and include transportation. The theatre requests payment by May 10, therefore payment must be made upon making reservations. This bus will leave from the Parks Department at 6:15 p.m. The Wicked show is planned for Sept. 17. Tickets are on special at $58 each, are orchestra and include transportation. MUSIC FROM 1950S & 60S
The Rutherford Chapter of UNICO National is proud to present “Music from the 50s and 60s” featuring the Cameos. The night includes two one-hour shows with music between shows on Saturday, April 12, 7-11 p.m. The event will be held at the Rutherford Elks Lodge, located at 48 Ames Ave. Tickets are $55 per person and include family-style dinner, beer, wine and soda. MONTHLY LUNCHEON

DONATE TO TROOPS
The Lyndhurst Elks Lodge at 251 Park Ave., Lyndhurst, is seeking items to be donated and sent to the men and women stationed in Iraq. LOCAL ART REQUESTED
The Carlstadt Historical Society appreciates any work of local artisans and hobbyists for display at the Sixth Street Firehouse Museum. MILITARY FAMILIES
The Women’s Club of Lyndhurst is collecting “white goods,” (i.e. paper towels, toilet tissue, etc.) to take to the Armory in Teaneck for our military personnel families. These families often have to rely on food stamps, which do not cover these items. These items can also be delivered to the Teaneck Armory, 1799 Teaneck Rd., Teaneck. CROP WALK
The Rutherford CROP walk will take place on Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. The walk will start at the First Presbyterian Church of Rutherford. Sponsor envelopes are available from local houses of worship, the Rutherford Public Library or by calling 201-460-9502. The walk is held to help local and worldwide hunger relief programs. CHILDREN’S TRICKY TRAY
Lyndhurst High School's Class of 2008 will be holding a Children’s Tricky Tray for children grades pre- K through 4 and their parents at the Senior Citizens' Building on Cleveland Avenue on Saturday, March 29.  Doors will open at noon and numbers will be called starting at 1 p.m. promptly. CASINO NIGHT
The Youth Consultation Service (YCS) will be holding a Casino Night, "Win One for the Kids" on Friday, April 4. BOCKBEERFEST
The Carlstadt Turnverein will sponsor a Bockbeerfest and dance on Saturday, March 29, in the Turn Hall, located on 500 Broad St. in Carlstadt. PITCH IN FOR BASEBALL
A collection drive is being held to benefit youth baseball programs in underserved communities and is in support of “Pitch In For Baseball”, a non-profit charity. Donations of the following gently-used or new items are needed the most: youth gloves, cleats, aluminum bats, catcher’s gear, instructional books and videos and teaching aids, like batting tees. COOKIE SALE
It’s not too late to buy Girl Scout cookies. Cookie booth sales will be held in March and April throughout northern New Jersey. Girl Scout troops will set up shop in front of stores to sell all eight varieties of cookies at $3.50 per box. This year the Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey offers a Cookie Booth Sale Locator link on their Web site at www.gsnnj.org so cookie customers can type in their zip code and find the booth sale nearest to them. Girl Scout cookies can also be bought at any of the three council service centers in Paramus, Randolph and Riverdale.

WINE TASTING & AUCTION
The Rutherford Education Foundation (REF) will be holding its annual Wine Tasting charity fund-raising event on Sunday, April 13, at the Williams Center in Rutherford, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Once again, the Rutherford Wine Shoppe will organize the wine distributors and present the wines to the community.  The wine selections will be complimented by a wonderful selection of hors d’oeuvres provided by both Steve & Andrea’s and Stinger’s Restaurants. The silent auction this year contains many exciting and one-of-a-kind items. SPAGHETTI DINNER
The Rutherford Chapter of UNICO National will be sponsoring its annual genuine Italian Spaghetti and Meatball dinner on Friday, April 28, to be held at the First Presbyterian Parish House, located on the corner of Ridge Road and Highland Cross in Rutherford. Dinner will be served from 5-7:30 p.m. and the donation will be $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for children. The dinner will be prepared by UNICO’s own authentic Italian American chef assisted by highly experienced volunteers. The menu will consist of a mixed salad, spaghetti and meatballs, beverage, dessert, coffee or tea. Italian music will be played during dinner. The proceeds of this event will support charities including Cooley’s Anemia Research, Mental Health Research, Scholarships, the Jimmy V. Foundation for Cancer Research and locally, the Rutherford Ambulance Corp., Welfare Department, Little League, Fire and Police Departments, etc.

SPRING CARNIVAL
St. Mary Elementary and High School of Rutherford will be holding its annual spring carnival at Memorial Field in Rutherford. The carnival begins Tuesday, April 8 and runs through Saturday, April 12. All are welcome to enjoy rides, games, food, sand art and fun. The carnival is open during the following days and times: Tuesday, April 8-Thursday, April 10, 6:30-10 p.m.; Friday, April 11, 6:30-11 p.m. and Saturday, April 12, 3-11 p.m.

BRADLEY ALLEN DAY
Students at North Arlington High School celebrated Bradley Allen Day on Wednesday, March 12. Allen was a student of North Arlington who lost his long battle with heart disease in the summer of his freshman year. His classmates, the graduating class of 2008, have decided to celebrate his life on this day. He would have turned 19 on March 9 and would be graduating this coming June. His classmates are remembering him by raising funds for a scholarship to be awarded in his name to a student of his class. Any donations to this beautiful and worthy cause are appreciated. HISTORY

HISTORIC PIANO
Donations to restore the internal components of the William Carlos Williams piano are greatly appreciated.  Generous donations were raised to return it to the Williams Center, tune it and place it in a protective dust cover. It is estimated a complete restoration will cost between $3,000 and $4,000. E. RUTHERFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The newly formed East Rutherford Historical Society welcomes new members. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month from 7-9 p. m. at the East Rutherford Civic Center, 33 Vreeland Ave. Participants are encouraged to bring artifacts and other antique items from East Rutherford to display or to discuss at the meetings. LITTLE RED SCHOOLHOUSE
The Little Red Schoolhouse, a project of the Lyndhurst Historical Society, has on display “Our Town,” an exhibit including photos and explanations of some historic buildings in the area such as the five hotels, movie theaters and bowling alleys. Additionally, the “Shapes” and new “Solid Geometry” contests for children are featured. The schoolhouse is open the second and fourth Sundays of each month, 2-4 p.m. The schoolhouse will be closed on March 23 for Easter Sunday. CARLSTADT
Carlstadt Historical Society meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Carlstadt Community (Civic) Center on Fourth Street. No admission is charged. The next meeting on March 19 will feature a video from NJN covering the worst storm to hit the New Jersey shore. The Carlstadt Historical Society would like to remind everyone that the Firehouse Museum on 6th Street is open the fourth Sunday of each month from 2-4 p.m. However, an exception is made for Easter Sunday, it will not be open then.


KIDS

ID KITS
The Knights of Columbus in North Arlington has obtained National Child I. D. Kits, and in cooperation with the North Arlington Police Department, have distributed the kits to the principals in all North Arlington Schools. These kits provide vital information on a child that can be given to police, prosecutors, FBI, Sheriff’s Offices and other law enforcement personnel in the event a child is kidnapped or is missing.  Residents can also pick up a kit at the North Arlington Public Library, or by contacting Grand Knight Robert Tarantula, 201 991-9606. There is no charge for the kit.

LADIES AUX. VIC’S HOOFERS

The Democratic Club of North Arlington will host an open house Friday, March 28, 8 p.m. at the V.F.W.

welcome. This is an opportunity to express opinions on any subject concerning North Arlington. For those who have questions on taxes, EnCap or streets, the club has people on various boards such as health, school, library, landlord and tenant, veterans and finance. The club will be having open houses three times in 2008. Come and meet the democratic council members. Light refreshments will be served. Regular meetings are held the third Friday of the month.

SUPPORT GROUP
Those individuals with loved ones currently serving in the United States Armed Forces are invited to attend Military Family Support Group meetings held Tuesdays, 7:30 p.m. at the Community Hall, 500 Third St., Carlstadt (next door to the First Presbyterian Church off Division Street). The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission Chief Administrator Sharon A. DONATE CELL PHONES
Cell Phones for Soldiers and Clare’s Union Avenue Liquors are calling on all Americans to donate unused cell phones to soldiers overseas.  Local residents can support the collection drive by donating their phones to 306 Union Ave. in Rutherford. The phones are sent to ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each donated phone- enough to provide an hour of talk time to soldiers abroad. Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to collect over 50,000 cell phones.

HONOR PLAQUE
The township of Lyndhurst, under the direction of Commissioner Robert Giangeruso and the Veteran’s Alliace with the guidance of Otis Graphics Inc. will be honoring our military personnel with a plaque to be placed on the grounds of the Lyndhurst Library. This plaque has been donated by many of our generous townspeople and will bear the names of servicemen and women from Lyndhurst. The following provisions have been created: those eligible must have served in any branch of the United States Armed Forces with at least one tour of active duty in the Middle East any time from 1990, were a Lyndhurst resident or a member of the Lyndhurst Post 139 American Legion, V.F.W. Post 3549 or AMVETS post 20 during the Middle East tour and must provide proof of active-duty service via a DD-214. RABIES CLINIC
The Rutherford Health Department will be conducting its annual free rabies clinic for Rutherford cats and dogs on Saturday, March 29, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Mortimer Avenue Fire House located at the corner of Mortimer Avenue and West Pierrepont Avenue. Registration forms can be picked up in advance of the clinic at the Health Department located at 184 Park Ave., from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on weekdays or at Police Headquarters after normal working hours. All cats and dogs must be accompanied by an adult and restrained on a leash or in a carrier. The vaccine to be administered at the Rabies Clinic is approved for a three-year duration of immunity for cats and dogs 12 months of age or older who have been previously vaccinated. Cats and dogs vaccinated in the age of three months to 11 months will require revaccination one year subsequently, in addition to those animals over 12 months with no history of previous rabies vaccination. If an animal has been previously vaccinated, proof of the prior immunization will be required in order to receive a three-year vaccination certificate at the rabies clinic.

WATER BADGE PROGRAM
The YWCA of Bergen County’s Scout Water Badge Program is offered on Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at 112 Oak St. in Ridgewood. Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney and the Department of Human Services announced that they are partnering with the American Association of Retired Persons to provide free income tax assistance to Bergen County residents with low incomes. Tax-aide will be offered every Thursday through April 10 from 9a.m.-noon on the second floor of the county administration building, located at One Bergen County Plaza in Hackensack. CHORE SERVICE
The Chore Service, sponsored by the Volunteer Center of Bergen County, performs minor household repairs that senior citizens and the disabled can neither do themselves nor get anyone else to do. A Chore Handyperson volunteer goes on service calls one day a week from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., or 1-5 p.m. Volunteers enjoy being part of a crew of one or two other volunteers plus a driver. A newly updated, comprehensive guide to volunteering in and near Bergen County is available free of charge. Published by the Volunteer Center of Bergen County, the 2008 Guide to Volunteering lists more than 300 nonprofit agencies and 1,100 volunteer positions for people of all ages. The book will be especially helpful to students seeking ways to fulfill community service requirements. HELPING FOSTER CHILDREN
Volunteer with Bergen County CASA and advocate for a foster child. Children are languishing in “the system” because of the lack of resources. MENTORING MOMS
Mentoring Moms, a program of the Volunteer Center of Bergen County, trains volunteers to serve as  mentors to overwhelmed mothers in need of guidance in parenting and life skills, particularly those who have been in child service programs or who are moving from welfare to work. When a parent is supported by a mentor, the entire family is helped, because mentors become important role models for the children, as well. Volunteers are provided with a six-session, 15-hour training program and ongoing support from program staff. Mentors usually spend 2-3 hours per week with a mother simply being a friend, listening, sharing ideas and offering encouragement. Spring training begins Monday, April 14 from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Volunteer Center of Bergen County, 64 Passaic St, Hackensack. VIPS TRAINING
For 30 years, VIPS has screened, trained and supported caring men and women who are positive role models and dedicated mentors to Bergen County children who have experienced abuse, neglect and/or isolation. The next six-week VIPS mentor training session begins Wednesday, April 16. It is held from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Volunteer Center of Bergen County, 64 Passaic St. in Hackensack. The 15-hour VIPS training covers such topics as developing good listening and communication skills, working through challenges, recognizing the signs of abuse and neglect, the role of the mentor and the matching process. WOMAN OF THE YEAR
The Woman’s Club of Carlstadt is accepting nominations for 2008’s “Woman of the Year.” Please submit a paragraph or two describing why chosen nominee should be the first “Woman of the Year.” Nominees must reside in Carlstadt, East Rutherford, Wallington or Wood-Ridge. Members of the Woman’s Club of Carlstadt are not eligible. The winner will be presented at the Annual Installation Dinner in May. JUNIOR HISTORIANS
The Meadowlands Museum continues its popular Junior Historian Program on April 13 with the Art of Stained Glass. First, children first grade and up will take a tour of the museum’s Henderson Glass Co. exhibit. The exhibit highlights stained glass of area homes and churches done by the Rutherford Henderson Co. The children will then create a stained glass peacock to take home. There will be two sessions at 1 and 2 p.m. Reservations are strongly recommended. The cost is $5. TEEN ADVISORY GROUP
Join Lyndhurst Library’s Teen Advisory Group if interested in having a say in the library’s books, magazines, music and programs available for teens. All time spent working with the group is eligible to be counted towards community service requirements. Any Lyndhurst student in grades 6-12 is welcome to join.
